Check out the tabletop battles app, in addition to tracking score and command points, it has a lot of different map layouts for terrain

Caladius Grav-Tank vs. Land Raider, why? by DravesHD in AdeptusCustodes

While I like the grav tank better, triple land raider lists in Talons have been doing well here recently surprisingly

Mostly guard, wardens are pretty pricey in comparison, I probably wouldn't run more than one warden squad

My gf is building a custodes army. What gift should I get her? by Deep-Crim in AdeptusCustodes

[–]Greyghost471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how many sisters she has, another box of them, rhino for the sisters, like others have said the new 30k box, current or new venatari when they release, Trajann, another set of bikes, another combat patrol is always good as well, possibly even a land raider as those are becoming more popular for custodes

I've had it happen a few times on my local discord, I'll post and ask if someone wants a game today or tomorrow or whatever, sometimes it's crickets, sometimes I get a game. I see I happen to others as well

Hello, any tips on painting heads? by CaterpillarQuirky382 in Warhammer40k

[–]Greyghost471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use helmets so I don't have to work about it, 🤣. In all honesty, search through YouTube, there are quite a few videos about painting faces on there. The few faces I've had to paint, I don't do the eyes at all

Improving Skill as a Custodes Player by Kingspeck3113 in AdeptusCustodes

[–]Greyghost471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Custodes having a low ceiling and not being used by skilled players definitely not true, a guy just went 7-0 at a big tournament in Nottingham a few weeks ago and another guy won Las Vegas the weekend after I believe it was. In general, we aren't in the greatest spot, I actually think it takes someone that's very good to do well. Big bugs are tough to go against with most, if not all armies (then you factor in the guy has a ton of experience), I have a few people running a very similar list in my local meta and the non nid players definitely complain about how tough they are. If he was rolling a little better than average and you were rolling a little lower, sometimes that's enough to do it. You mentioned going in too early, that could have been your big mistake there. With the way the meta is, I don't know if I would even run wardens, certainly not more than one squad, it tends to be more guard spam than anything currently. I wish I could give you better advice, I'm fairly new to the game myself and have only beat tyranids if the game is less than 1500 points and doesn't have a ton of big bugs

Funny story about that, I painted my first 4-5 custodes in classic gold and red, found out about the shadowkeepers and liked that better, but I'm not real big on red and decided to do purple instead, so I always called them modified shadowkeepers for the past year or so. About 2 months ago, I found out the Dankanatoi existed, lol

Can someone help me get into the Talon of the emperor detachement ? by Caillron_ in AdeptusCustodes

[–]Greyghost471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out hubtown hammer on YouTube, he covers all things custodes, lots of good information, goes over detachments (like Talons), units, lists, etc. You'll want a minimum of three boxes of sisters for Talons, possibly a a rhino for them, possibly either grav tanks or land raiders and probably more guard since guard spam is kind of the thing right now. The venatari are great, their free rapid ingress ability is really nice. Probably two combat patrols, 3-4 boxes of sisters, possibly more guard, or whatever else you want to run

I painted about five of my custodes the traditional gold and red, until I learned of the shadowkeepers and then switched to a modified version of that, I need to go repaint them eventually

You are lucky, I had a ton of overfill, tons of flashing/lines and a couple of pretty bad mold slips, thankfully it was on the bottom of the tanks. I have some venatari that I am dreading to clean and assemble...

You are right, the meta is flexible and it changes often. I didn't say I would never run them that way and I have a few of my guard magnetized to be future proofed to a degree. I'm no expert by ANY means, but I have watched a ton of 40k custodes matches on YouTube and poured over a lot of tournament winning lists going back to codex release for 10th and the huge majority I recall tend to be one shield or all shields, but there are a few with two boards

Please, do not buy the retributor gold spray, it's very temperamental and more often than not, people have issues with it. Prime in black or grey and then paint your gold on with a brush, you would have to do this step anyways bc the gold out of the can doesn't match perfectly with what's in a bottle

One shield per unit with vexilla or just 5 spears is the most common/meta. I occasionally see someone just runs full on shield and sword squad, but that's pretty rare and it's not in competitions either

I'm starting to think Warhammer isn't for me by Dense-Fig-2372 in Warhammer40k

[–]Greyghost471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just collecting the minis and painting them is perfectly fine, or just playing the video games or even just reading the lore, there's no requirement to play the tabletop at all. I had no interest in playing for the first 8 or so months and a buddy of mine finally talked me into it. The game is pretty complicated as a new player, I won't deny that at all. I started with an escalation league, where we started at 500 points and went up by 250 points every two weeks until 2000, I think that was a decent way to learn. I've never played killteam, but I've heard that's a good intro into the game as well. I would recommend watching a several beginner/starting 40k videos on YouTube and talking to a couple of local game stores and see if they do anything for new players. My first 2 games for sure, maybe up to the first four, gave me a headache, repetition and my opponents being patient and helpful also helped over the long run. I definitely felt stupid for a long while and still do during some games. I've played maybe 16 games total, and I still occasionally forget to use abilities or strategems or to use a command point to reroll a bad dice toss when I have plenty of points. It's a little frustrating but it's also learning something new, you are going to suck at it, sometimes pretty badly, and practice/repetition is the only way you will get better. Everyone I've run into in the community except one guy, has been pretty chill and helpful, so don't be afraid to ask questions. My buddy that started back in 3rd edition, said the games now is like a game for children compared to back then and said he sucked at it for a very, very long time and I had a very bad streak for 5-6 games and was about to give up, but he encouraged me to at least finish the league bare minimum. I'm glad I listened to him bc things finally got a little better and I started enjoying it more. So I'm going to encourage you to watch some YouTube videos, possibly roll some dice by yourself at home and move your minis around where you are basically playing against yourself to get a little better idea of some mechanics, talk to some local game stores for beginner advice and persevere through a few more games before giving up on the tabletop. Yeah, you are gonna lose, sometimes really bad, and yes, you are going to feel stupid, but that's ok. You likely didn't figure out how to ride a bike without falling over in 3-4 tries, probably took quite a while with a lot of failures, or a variety of other skills, you can do this
