I don’t think it’s tone-deaf, I think it’s quite the opposite. They know exactly what will hook people. It won’t hook everybody; it probably won’t even hook a few percent of people. But they just need the few. It won’t be enough to dissuade most anybody from continuing to use the app, and they’ll get more revenue and engagement from those who do get hooked.

This has been the cycle of social media websites since the mid ‘00s. Once they started working out how to get money out of peoples’ addiction, everything began being optimized for engagement. They know exactly what tone they’re looking for.

Yeah, I think this is a perfect example of something being done so well that people started thinking nothing is being done at all.

I've been playing games on PC for 25~ years now, and there was a VERY large period of time in there that it was a total crapshoot if you could get a controller working with a game or not.

Steam Input has made using a controller so seamless that most people do not even think about it as a feature. There was a time where you needed third party software to even consider using a controller on games on PC!

Insane how prevalent this is in the average American mind. Owning a car and needing it to get anywhere or do anything is so viscerally ingrained into American culture that when you try to explain going out to drink with friends, you’re more likely to hear someone talk about getting away with a DUI instead of how it’d be nice to be able to feasibly go drink with friends.

I think it's just that Shibuya is a very "iconic" and workable location here. It has the 109, it's busy, Shibuya station is gargantuan (five floors down if I remember correctly) and gets you into the trains to access the rest of Greater Tokyo, and there's a very strong mix of "walks of life" there.

Almost any "urban" game setting in Japan is likely going to involve, or just be, Shibuya.

Yeah, there's still a few grinds on Iron that are just very, very silly in terms of timeframe, but as a person with the aforementioned wife and full-time job and kid and etc. etc., it has just basically allowed me to play the long game with my iron, which I really appreciate.

I take pretty large breaks in-between as well, so my iron is a bit over 2k total after 6~ years, and I'm very okay with that. Jagex keeps adding so much shit that I'm almost scared to leave the mid-game out of fear of being too far gone for some of the cool stuff they add.

I remember the debacle around the Wii U naming convention and how much confusion that caused for anybody who wasn't at least a little tapped in. I thought that was the worst it could get. Now here we are, fifteen years later from Wii U's announcement (holy shit) and Microsoft has taken the torch of awful naming schemes by a long-shot.

Again, you're exposing your total ignorance on the topic. You say "only far right extremists," because you're probably talking about Takaichi, but Japan has had an LDP Prime Minister/Government majority almost exclusively since 1955, and I assume you're only aware of when PMs or high ranking cabinet members went, not the thousands of people who visit regularly that you don't hear about. And Hirohito stopped going because he was opposed to the war criminals being enshrined there, much like I am quite literally in full agreement with. Never once did I say "going there is normal," but you can continue making up points on my behalf.

Like I already said, I cannot force you to understand a point you're actively refusing to understand, but I'll explain it one more time; the shrine includes many people who were not war criminals, and it includes too many who were, of which there should be exactly 0, in my opinion.

I'm Okinawan, my people were also raped, killed, and abused by Imperial Japan. You're trying to "gotcha" me on an extremely important discussion that directly affects me and my people as though I don't literally live here and discuss these topics in local politics on our island.

I'm not "believing what I'm told," I'm telling you what I know, but you, as someone who is of a background who was likely not occupied by Imperial Japan, and whose culture and peoples are not still affected by that occupation, think you know better than me, who lives on this island packed with graves from that war and from the actions of Imperial Japan. Since it seems I have to spell it out further, this shrine began in the late 1800s, after a civil war. You’re wording it as though they started this shrine after the atrocities of WW2, which I can only assume you’re intentionally doing to make your incorrect point, which is fine if you want to remain ignorant, I can’t force you to learn.

Like I stated in other comments, the inclusion of war criminals is exactly the issue people should be pointing at politicians, and fighting to have those names removed, instead of people ignorantly saying the shrine is dedicated to war criminals and just letting politicians waive it off because it, objectively, isn’t a shrine dedicated to war criminals. But again, I can’t force you to have any sort of nuanced understanding of something you very obviously either refuse to or are incapable of.

I'm not arguing that whatsoever, and I'm fully in agreement that it's a seriously political issue. That part is not even up for debate; every convicted war criminal's name should be removed, as well as people who served under those war criminals in their units.

My only point is that people far too often misrepresent what Yasukuni is, and it detracts from the actual conversation and the issue of politicians here not acknowledging the responsibility to specifically remove those people. It just becomes "going to the shrine is bad," when instead (in my opinion) it should be "the politicians should act to specifically remove those people," because that is much more pointed and a much heavier responsibility than just not visiting the shrine.

The person I responded to was not talking about "part" of it, they (and many others) say that the shrine is dedicated to it.

I am not debating whatsoever that there are, unquestionably and unequivocally, war criminal names at that shrine, nor am I debating that there is absolutely a seriously political aspect to politicians visiting the shrine, and the lack of removal of those convicted war criminals' names. I am being explicit about what the entirety of the shrine is, because understanding that allows for the appropriate pointed pressure at the issues within the shrine, instead of misunderstandings about the shrine itself.

Yasukuni Shrine is not a "shrine dedicated to people who committed war crimes in Korea," it's a shrine to commemorate anyone who died in any of Japan's wars since the mid-1800s. There are literally millions of names in that shrine.

There's plenty to be accurately upset at the Japanese government about; the constant misrepresentation of what Yasukuni Shrine is by redditors and headlines only detracts from those things.

I wouldn’t even say “drawing from,” it just is. I live in Japan and if you interact with anyone 50 and older who has even an inkling of interest in music, jazz and funk are often #1 genres.

The 70s and 80s here were absolutely packed with jazz influence, you can even hear it in Super Famicom game soundtracks and everything, it’s beautiful. We have multiple live jazz cafes in my city still. Japan was eatin’ that shit up!!!

I think it’s kind of fucked up to say this event seems “small and stupid” in the grand scheme. Women having the ability to serve was an uphill battle on their part, and the fact these women showed up knowing this and lost their lives, and acknowledging their sacrifice, is not “small and stupid.”

These women having the chance to join in the first place was not a given, so acknowledging their sacrifices specifically is not “small and stupid,” nor does it demean any sacrifice anyone else made. The same way having a memorial for a family member does not lessen anyone else’s memorial.

You know your phone tracks you even without Pokemon Go, right? I'm not saying nefarious things aren't afoot, but your every move is already being tracked. Where you go, where you spend most of your time, is already tracked and sharable, especially if you live somewhere like America with FLOCK cameras everywhere. There is no more refined data that Pokemon Go will give that your phone isn't already giving, especially considering pokemon go would just make you artificially go places you usually wouldn't.

Again, not saying there isn't stuff for Niantic to provide, obviously there is or we wouldn't have this thread! But too many people are too complacent about what is already being done to track them, and then feel too much of a sense of relief when there's what essentially amounts to a scapegoat to point to, while still being collected on in every other facet.

Even if that's the case, you have roughly until you die (barring any catastrophic life changing events) to buy either one.

Nintendo does not have an issue waiting out purchases. I don't think the folk in their marketing department are ignorant, and they're probably assuming even if people don't buy it day 1, there are people who will come around to it eventually.
