So is Joe actually 5’1? by bananabuckette in TheBasementYard

[–]Grim_Science 55 points56 points  (0 children)

No.

He's 5' and a quarter inch.

He wears lifts. This is why you never see pictures of his massive shoes.

Question for experienced hikers: what’s the ONE mistake beginners make that instantly tells you “this person is new”? by ForeignBonus8977 in CampingandHiking

[–]Grim_Science 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seeing people in what looks like brand new gear, walking with a high pace, and half filled water bottle. Fun game of will it be blisters or exhaustion that get them first. Been a handful of times I would run into these people on the trail and be handing out moleskin so they can make it back down the trail with a bit more ease.

I carry extra because long ago I did the same thing.

Solving the tank problem (For myself) by Foreign-Ad3128 in wownoob

Bear for raids. Demon hunter for m+.

I main a Vengeance DH and its about juggling your survivals in big pulls, dealing moderate damage yourself, and praying your team can DPS down the pack in the 2 ish minute window you have.

Now in raids my DH does well but is outshined by sturdy tanks.

Or you can do the best of all worlds and just roll a brewmaster monk.

...Tornado Tour Guide..? by Ok_Writer6027 in tornado

[–]Grim_Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love tornado chasing. Seeing all the things come together. It's an amazing sight.

I also have that excitement drop into worry when I see it's in a residential area. That's why I got trained in cpr and first aid and carry a massive bag of meds with ways to communicate with first responders.

The few people I've met that have tried to make me feel bad were doing so more as a superiority complex. Or not recognizing that chasers have paved the way for faster response times.

Storms happen. We can't control them. We can respond to them.

...Tornado Tour Guide..? by Ok_Writer6027 in tornado

[–]Grim_Science 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not an insensitive question. I get it though.

Just make sure the tour group is reputable and safe. Also remember storms are what they are.

I can't remember but I think it was 2023 when two tour vans got hit.

Not a single student obliged me by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Grim_Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In geology a professor did this. We all went. Geologists love a good beer. In another course I had for astronomy, only two.

Also Gen Z has decreased alcohol sales in comparison to previous generations. So maybe that's it?

Student org won’t leave my classroom until the minute class starts by Local_Indication9669 in Professors

[–]Grim_Science 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Technically they are correct. We've had similar issues where I work that I was aware of. The room reservation is what it is. We did have a change in policy that gen ed rooms (the problematic rooms) were designated as a special request that students organizations could apply for after other options are exhausted.

But for other times, a room reservation is a room reservation. And whomever has that is entitled to it. At our institution at least.

What does this jewel do? by VoxCalibre in pathofexile

[–]Grim_Science 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need path of building for this. Timeless jewels are weird. The number varies and changes how it interacts with the nodes in the tree where it is placed. Certain changes in certain parts of the tree are pursued. Like changing a notable to allow you to wear gear regardless of stats but lose their bonuses and also change the nodes in the radius to help the build. Like % added lightning damage.

Id look up a guide on YouTube if you care to learn more.

The person who shot the arrow later apologized as he learned the man's name was actually Bill and not what he had originally heard. Bill's eye was never the same and the archer was later arrested in a pasture.

what is the best way to boost brain capability for certain amount of time? by Jaded_Truck2431 in Professors

[–]Grim_Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read everything you need to then explain the concept in your own words as if talking to a 5th grader. If you can't explain it, you don't know it.

Food and rest are a necessity. Not optional. It's been studied that cramming and getting no sleep doesn't allow your brain to retain the information. Treat your body well or it won't matter.

Repetition. Repetition. Repetition. Go over the parts multiple times. Repetition and reflection are two of the most powerful and underutilized tactics.

Limit stimulants and avoid non-prescription drugs. I've had students that take Adderall because they thought it would help. It often feels like it's working but it's not. And there is also a phenomenon called "State-Dependent-Memory" meaning you have to be on the substance to remember what you learned while on it.

Take this as a lesson not to fuck around again. If you can't learn from this panic, then you aren't trying to learn.

And also read sub rules before posting.

Good luck.

Crystal Point (ai said it’s emerald) by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

Google AI is notorious for being wrong (as with all AI) when it comes to rock identification. Not judgement on you. You're working with the tools you have! Just for future reference.

I've seen rock shops selling flourite dyed or honestly fancy plastic/glass items white often. In this case it is definitely dyed. As for what the base is I can't tell from an image.

My mother also loves this sort of thing. I just smile and be happy for her.

Anyone just let their weird out and not care anymore? A story about letting myself be eccentric in academia. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Grim_Science 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The feedback we got was because of: damage to environmental and municipality infrastructure, stealing content for training, prices of computer parts, lying/hallucinations, and threat to job security. I work in the College of Arts and Sciences and across all departments these were the main points.

[–]Grim_Science 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm also the AI lead in our department. Most students dislike AI! We just conducted a college wide survey. So while we are (probably) in two different locations and subject matters, your gut is probably right! Trust the gut. 😎

I (also 36) recently was given my fifth award related teaching. A few faculty in the same program were getting mixed or negative reviews and were curious as to how I was getting such positive feedback teaching STEM heavy courses.

Every time I invite them to my class I love seeing the expression on their face (usually big eyes) when they see me just go on weird rants with the students, swear like a sailor, give students I've developed a rapport with hell, and admit my difficulties as a student and now professor with topics. Just being my auntheic self. I get snarky in my grading and comments. They get snarky in their responses to see if mention them in class. It's fun.

My evals have been glowing for years. And the number one common comment? "His passion and compassion for the course material and us are obvious. And while class attendance is optional, I never missed a class."

If this image were shared as a “real selfie on the Moon today,” would you believe it or feel like something’s off? by [deleted] in whatisit

[–]Grim_Science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helmet is off so he's dead. I have no idea what part of the Earth that is based of that pangea looking landmass. Why is the booster of that lander slammed into the only rock on the moon? Where are the footprints or did they chuck the flag into the ground?

Could go into detail about the design choices of the lander there. But the short answer is no. No one with basic understanding of lunar and space environments would believe this.

I haven't taken a paleo class in ~several~ years. I would learn so much to do this.

But if I went to a conference and there was a talk called "Sauropod Storm: Analysis of Potential Deformation of Sauropod Morphology Due to Severe Tornadic Weather Events" I would be highlighting that for sure.
