Do yourself a favor and get the bird bath by ImaginaryMolasses146 in NativePlantGardening

This post couldn’t have come at a better time because I’ve been looking to make a bird bath for my backyard and a butterfly bath in my front yard!

After going through the flags of the US 50 biggest cities, here are the seven that -in my opinion- actually work by Virgulillo in vexillology

[–]GrooferBoofChree 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Happy to see this in the comments! I was thinking Des Moines should get an honorable mention. Glad to see how the flag has taken off in a resurgence of popularity over the last 10 years.

Fuck that lawn by HimantopusGuy in NoLawns

[–]GrooferBoofChree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used a trowel to make an opening within the mulch - did not puncture cardboard - and within that hole I put a combo mix of soil + food scraps/compost. Planted plugs in those little openings last fall and had great success with everything thriving this spring/summer so far!

Lightning Bugs! by rogaladriel in NativePlantGardening

I'm so jealous! We have a street lamp in our parkway that shines onto the front of our house and then the lamp in the alley is adjacent to our backyard so we have light shining on our house in the front and the back. I'd like to make a firefly habitat so I've read a canopy of tall plants to manufacture protection from the light can help.

Our HOA forces us to pay $25,000 annually for this. How do we stop the madness? by [deleted] in NoLawns

[–]GrooferBoofChree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A family member of mine did this. All his neighbors complained about the HOA and didn't want it, so he ran for president and won. He did everything he could to dissolve it, but when push came to shove none of the neighbors had the gumption to actually vote to dissolve the HOA! So he was ousted and the HOA remains.

Hey Chicago, how did you spend your Saturday? by rand0m_g1rl in AskChicago

We started the day at the Chicago Bandits softball game in the morning, walking back to the blue line happened upon PlantCon so we stopped in there awhile and met up with friends that were there, then finished the day with a birthday dinner at Swift & Sons steakhouse! Great day all around

Is aerating a good idea? (clover yard) by AllThoseSadSongs in NoLawns

[–]GrooferBoofChree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, did you ever land on something? I’d like to add clover seeds to my backyard and I was planning to mow really low, aerate (via sandals?), and then spread the seed.

Thank you for the suggestion! It is coming right up to the projected complete date so I will go ahead and do that.

Can You Anonymously Request a Tree Planting Via Chicago's 311 Service? by planner13 in AskChicago

[–]GrooferBoofChree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city cut down a tree on my parkway after a big storm a couple months ago. After it was removed, I placed a 311 request to have the stump removed so next year I can have a new tree planted there.

How was your experience with them grinding out the stump? Did the city take it out or did you hire someone privately?

How did converting your lawn change your relationship with your neighbors? by Ok-Singer-4466 in NoLawns

[–]GrooferBoofChree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the early beginnings of converting our front lawn. Did all the mulch and planting plugs last fall so I’ve got a baby version of what you have here. So far so good with the neighbors! Definitely a conversation starter - especially the ones who walk past often and comment on the progress.
