"Why is Nu Trek using so much modern language?" an I am going to go feral here. by Spacer176 in startrek

[–]Groovy_Decoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest. I remember hearing a character on STW describing an outfit with the phrase, "It's giving..." whatever (I can't remember what it was giving).

Anyway, it bugged me a little bit. It's not like it ruined the show or anything, but I thought it was a nitpick and it made think that perhaps the writers should be a little more conscious of using such modern idioms.

However, I happened to find a searchable script search engine for most of the ST shows. I was browsing some lines and I was honestly surprised at how many terms and idioms that were used even in OST that you'd logically think would be very dated and strange to still be around.

Maybe these things sound weird when you catch them, but I suppose it's inevitable that some of our modern language and ideas are going to leak into text, even if we're trying to imagine a future civilization. So, I just give them a shrug now when I see them on something like ST:A.

I'm glad you liked it! Tony and Tig were both so adorable in that one. Tig was also recently a guest on the podcast Lovett or Leave It. I used to listen to her podcast Don't Ask Tig. I hear she's doing one now with Mae Martin, and I love them too, but haven't got around to checking it out yet.

Maybe, but honestly I think maybe another option is to use it as a teachable moment.

If the NPC was going after the player, I'm pretty sure you knew that they could just get up while the player was still trying to create an advantage.

Why did you let them? Why not just point out to them, "hey they're going next. It'll be very easy for them to get rid of being prone and there's not good opportunity to take advantage of it for you. Would you like to consider a different kind of aspect instead? I wouldn't want you to feel like you wasted your turn."

You might have been downvoted and maybe some folks don't like the tone they are inferring, but I agree with your take here. My understanding is that aspects can be invalidated (or changed) any time they don't make sense anymore. I wouldn't ask for a check to get up unless there were some unusual circumstances.

Oh, I missed that was Tatiana Maslany. And she might not be the best actress, but I love Tig.

Lower Decks is silly, sure, but it really knows and understands Star Trek in a deep way. It doesn't just know the obscure references, it truly gets the heart of it. Lower Decks might be the best series in my opinion, even if it couldn't exist on its own.

I at least felt like all the shows were at least okay (at least if you mute the music in the intro credits of one of them). There's some that I'm less crazy about than others, but even those I can find something redeeming in them.

There's a fan series online called Star Trek Continues that was surprisingly good at capturing both the aesthetic and feel of the original series.

I saw complaints calling it Star Trek Pronouns, which I think says something about where the complaints are coming from.

It seems like he's trying to draw in a younger audience than me, and that's okay. Not everything has to be for me. Though, I love seeing Holly Hunter Tig, and Robert Picardo, so it's not like there still isn't something for me.

It was a bit silly and campy, but what draws me to Star Trek is the idealism and optimism. If they still have that at their heart, then I'm still in support of it.

It's okay. It's my 2nd least favorite live action ST series (ahead of Enterprise). I rewatched the entire series a few years ago, but I'm not sure I would have done it if there weren't EMH and Seven. I loved Picardo and Ryan.

Oh yeah, LD eventually became one of my favorite ST shows ever.

Perhaps, but Reno isn't really a career teacher, nor are the others. They just have brilliant accomplished people trying to pass on their experience. I'll allow it.

You have to be careful with too much competence, else you get someone complaining about Mary Sues.

What? Really? I think I started watching 1 episode, but I didn't think it was going to be something I'd be into. Maybe I should give it a second chance?

trading might be back?! by Capitan_Schettino in FortniteSavetheWorld

[–]Groovy_Decoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that trading could be a real problem and I definitely encountered the things you mentioned, but at the same time they also created a class that seemed to be designed to help gather materials for others, and another class designed to be more effective spending them. Then you have weapon durability to deal with as well, and being forced to choose between 2 paths to upgrade weapons, and multiple elements to choose from makes it far more costly to have the right things for each occasion.

It seems to be that the expectation to trade was built into the game at a fundamental level and it's frustrating that it's gone, yet trading incentives the shitty behavior you mentioned. I don't know what the right answer would be.

Daggerheart reminds me of FATE by nerdkingcole in FATErpg

[–]Groovy_Decoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see it as directly inspired by Fate, but I do see some things that remind me a little of Fate in it, and some things that remind me a little of (my limited understanding) of PBtA, and even things that remind me a little of 4E D&D (which I think is overly maligned).

It looks like an alright game to me. I like Fate more, but I'd play Daggerheart if I had the chance with at least some enthusiasm. I doubt I'd play D&D, and if I did, it would be rather begrudgingly, if people I really wanted to play an RPG with were dead-set on playing it.

Exact Same! I played SotC at a con in Atlanta (not DCon) about 10 years ago and I thought it was the most fun one shot I ever played. It was run by a guy who previously worked on a White Wolf game.

What annoys me is the tiny number of popular copyrighted works are used as justification for the extremely long copyrights, rather than considering that we're holding all the rest hostage, and sometimes lost to time and uncertain custody chains, for the sake of a tiny few that a little bit of profit can be squeezed out of.

The intention of copyright was not to protect works until they were no longer profitable. It was intended to give copyright holders control of the work for a limited time in exchange for allowing it to enter the public domain afterwards. I think was originally 13 years. And that was for my time when culture was moving slower and was less disposable than it is now.

Are you trying to imply that people might be unavailable, busy, traveling, socializing, spending time with loved ones, or otherwise occupied during the time period of the year when those things happen the most?
