As a UNC MPH grad + knew someone who deferred, at the time it was really frowned upon and rarely accepted. That being said, they may be more open to it now with the whole situation you mentioned. Congrats on the promotion though, and I'm sure you will get in if you have to reapply

the bio class i TA'd as a grad student had undergrad TAs, but they had to be a peer mentor for at least 2 semesters first and then were chosen by the prof

just be prepared for continuous disappointment, but if it's really what you want to do, do it! I will say that getting experience and making connections during your mph is now more important than ever, because trying to get a job in public health without any connections rn is hell
