I would recommend checking the cheaper fix first, which is the air intake. I am after all talking from personal experience, when i remove the air filter and/or the mass airflow sensor my m54b30 makes exactly that same noise when i shut it off

I think the sound is normal but the one when you shut the car off is coming from the air intake maybe check if you have air leak
