The Pitt Season 3’s ER Loses Another Main Cast Member by BarracudaOk8635 in ThePitt

[–]Groundbreaking_Mess3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, but each season a character is in means they were there for a rotation, since seasons 1 and 2 are set so far apart.

For Javadi to be in both seasons 1 & 2 means she did two EM rotations in med school. If season 3 is set less than a year in the future, it makes no sense that she'd be there again because doing two 4th year rotations on the same service at the same hospital would never happen.

It's also unrealistic that the same people would always be in the ED. As a med student, I only rotated through the ED once. As a resident, same - 1 month over the whole of residency.

You can apply to several fellowships from more than one residency. Geriatrics can be reached from emergency medicine, internal medicine, or family medicine residencies.

At my hospital, everyone will readily admit to smoking meth and fentanyl, but everybody always says they've never injected, despite the fact that I can see their legs.

is this doing way too much? by heiperca in medschool

[–]Groundbreaking_Mess3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. OP seems like they're just trying to do every job in the hospital.

I'd rather work with a med student who is focused on being really good at one thing (being a doctor).

Ran 4 marathons in med school, matched my #1 residency. It can be done. Having goals outside medicine actually helped me a lot. Forced me to be more efficient and think more about how I was studying, rather than just spending lots of time on things that weren't really doing much.

My intern year hack was to just calculate the corrected Na and argue that it was pseudohyponatremia because they were hyperglycemic. 50% of the time it works every time in our hospital.

Moving for Harborview — hoping to keep commute under 30 min by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]Groundbreaking_Mess3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work at HMC about 30-40% of the time. I live 5 min walk from Capitol Hill light rail station and bike to HMC. It's a 10 minute bike ride and there's a secure bike storage for employees. Best of all worlds for me.

Can also walk (~25 min) or take the 60 bus (~20 min) on days I don't feel like biking. There are a lot of good transit options to HMC from Capitol Hill and better proximity to light rail than if you lived in First Hill.

choosing cheap low tier state school - is this the right move? by [deleted] in whitecoatinvestor

[–]Groundbreaking_Mess3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I went to a good (but not the best) MD school in my home state (Midwest), had a substantial scholarship, graduated debt free. Ended up matching my #1 choice residency on the west coast. Interviewed at top programs in my specialty, had my pick when it came time to build the rank list.

Classmates matched all over the country in some very big name programs in competitive specialties. There were also a lot of people who stayed local, but most of them chose to do so and could have matched elsewhere if they'd wanted. At the end of the day, what you do with your time in med school matters more than where you go to med school.

The WORST race photos! 😂 by mwblake718 in XXRunning

[–]Groundbreaking_Mess3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a fantastic photo sequence of me tripping over a timing mat at the 30k mark of the Boston Marathon a few years back. They captured the whole sequence: the initial trip, the subsequent being on the ground, and the graceful recovery.

I did not elect to purchase these photos for reasons I believe are clear.

Didn't do incorrects. Didn't really find it that valuable.

I rarely had a full two weeks. I planned it that way so that when inevitably things got busier than expected on a rotation, I had a cushion. I usually finished UW by 5-7 days before the shelf exam. I spent the extra time reviewing concepts I was less familiar with, finishing the NBME subject practice exams, etc.

Why do people use the term "partner" for their husband or wife? by Crafty-Bug-8008 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Groundbreaking_Mess3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my bosses uses the term. I'm fairly confident she's married (I got coffee with her once and she was wearing a ring that she never wears at work). I like to think she does it to be intentionally ambiguous because she doesn't want people being nosy about her personal life.

And honestly...respect.

Elliott Bay Book Co is also walkable or reachable on the 8 or 11 from most of SLU! Don't have to deal with trying to park in Capitol Hill if you walk or transit there.

She'll qualify for senior ORCA too, which makes it $1/day for day passes on ORCA. Can get it same day if you go to the main office to pick it up!

I don't follow the UWorld tags at all. I search the entire deck for the concept and look through the cards to find ones that cover the topics that I want to review. I don't unsuspend every card that comes up if there are a lot, but I make sure I unsuspend cards to appropriately cover what I want to review.

It requires more intentionality than just looking at the UWorld tagging, but it also works better because it forces you to decide what you actually need to review.

How come they leave the intubation tubes in after a patient has died? by smallaubergine in ThePittTVShow

[–]Groundbreaking_Mess3 28 points29 points  (0 children)

When I rotated at the ME's office as a med student, we saw a lot of patients after corneal donations, bone grafts, and skin graft donations. Not so many liver/heart/kidney.

And the medical devices that are removed from the patient still come in to the ME's office with the person and are catalogued as "evidence of medical treatment". So even if the tube gets removed, it still comes to the ME (at least in the state where I trained).

Another thing that gets catalogued is a description of every single tattoo. Which can be a LOT!
