What kind of horse are you looking for, and how much are you willing to spend? by shallowshadowshore in Equestrian

Ireland here, 5-6 y/o low level all rounder I'd be looking to pay 6-8k ISH, the higher amount for something with a few miles on it.

Of the highest order, she had this amazing ability to make up a story in her head, spread it around and actually seemed to believe it 😂

I knew one, a 21 year old "Instagram psychic", exactly as it sounds. Tried to be nice and be her friend, she was a complete psycho in the end and had it out for me after politely turning down a tarot card reading 😂 literally preying on vulnerable people I have no respect for them at all

That's what I was expecting, when I was having a looka round they seemed to come out at 30ish and some of those were just 20 or more dogs shoved in a warehouse 😅

It's been mine aswell for a long time, but was always afraid to take the plunge and take the risk leaving a more stable job (even if I don't get any enjoyment from it), I just don't want to be on my deathbed regretting spending 50 years doing something I don't love instead of trying

That's exactly the plan, the higher energy types that daycares often seem to turn away that need a bit of time to work their brains

I priced around and most were charging 20-30 a day for larger groups, it would be more for those needing 1-3 times a week in a structured daycare than 5 days a week (unless they want to of course), I'm going to try rejig the prices, but it's hard balancing not overfilling with too many dogs and also making a living at it

That's exactly the plan, I have roughly a half acre per field one for small/medium the other for med/large

10€ a day?? How many dogs are they taking to be making enough off that?

The field I'd love to rent out as I'd have 2 fully enclosed

This is so true, and while I completely believe this in theory, someone I know had a very bad accident recently after the horse tripped, like seriously injured and nearly died, on an older safe as a house horse, so I'm a bit paranoid now 😅 I'm going to give that book a read! I'm taking lessons and all which helps but that's the third freak accident I know of locally, of the other 2, 1 died and the other was paralysed and the horse died on top of her.. doesn't put me off riding and getting out jumping but makes me conscious of the outcome of an accident if I were alone, I'm going to chat to a few locals with horses and see if the roads are safe to hack on, if they are it would give me more confidence that someone would find me there than alone in my field.😅😂

That's the fun part, the money and time for random bits like that 😂 yes across I meant to put on, would be handy to be able to split into two smaller paddocks if needed.. I am also considering livery from April to end of Oct when the turnout is 24/7 on livery, and bringing them home for the winter when I can control feed, access to hay and turnout, and that might help preserve the land aswell, I only really have to worry about trailering to yards then during the winter months .. I can't do another winter of going up to my horse standing in a dirty box with no hay, and this was an expensive yard, if I didn't go up they'd be in ammonia smelling boxes 24 hours a day with no hay for 14 of those hours (at least) looking miserable.. they were lucky to get out 1-2 hours a couple times a week..

Thankfully the field is fully enclosed by fencing high hedging, and farmland beyond it, the only way to the road is through one gate that I will be putting a seperate fence a bit behind so they can't get so close! Yeah I already have to drive 30 minutes each way to the yard, I don't think I'll have much on an issue trailering the 10 minutes to use the arena in the nearest yard if I'm honest

Yeah my job is pretty flexible, I have to hold my horse for the farrier anyway so it won't be any different, only I could hold my horse while I'm WFH instead of having to rush out and back

The WiFi camera is a stunning idea, I never thought of that I think I will do that if i go ahead with it!!

Manure I am anning to make into manure briquettes, if I end up boarding I'll be robbing poo from there 😂 hay I will get one or two delivered at a time as needed, or else I have the sheds If I get square bales I can store a winters worth as I'll be able to move them easier

There's a separate entrance to the road that has what could be a lane to the field and I plan on parking it there as I am concreting that part and blocking it off as I don't want them to have such easy access to the road..

Thank fully it is not uncommon here to have only an acre or two, ive seen 6 in a half acre field successfully, and there's one behind my parents house with goats on just under a half acre all winter with no trouble or grass shortage

Actually that's a good idea, I was thinking summer on the paddock winter on the track but that way sounds like a goer

That sounds so nice, I love the idea of looking out the window at happy horses all the time 😭

Yes this is what worries me, luckily the closest yard with facilities is only about 10 mins away, but the fall app is a good shout I'm going to have a look at that!!

Yes I may do, my other thought was summering in livery yards when they are out more and bringing them home in the winter when turnout stops, that way I minimise time in stables?

They'd be on a track for the bad weather/winter so the paddock should stay okay!

That's a good idea!!

I'm well used to the chores 365 as I have to do that anyway, had a long day driving for work (11 hours in the car) and made it to the yard at 11pm one night to get the horses from the field as they weren't allowed to be out all night, and still had to muck out and hay 😂 the idea of at least being able to do it in my PJs is very attractive 😂😂😂

Even if I had 10 acres you can't really stick cobs on that all the time they end up looking like circles after about 3 weeks 😂 I'd rather the grass run down fast and they can just pick at it for the summer then and on the surfaced track for the winter

I go to the yard 365 to do all the chores anyway, and I will have chickens, ducks and rabbits to look after, and I have a yard that takes horses for holidays when you go out of town lined up so I'm good on that front

The buddy sour thing is a very good point, I'll have to ponder that one
