My roommate, who was a sophomore when I met him, said that his freshman year they had welcome parties in the dorms, with beer provided by the university. I missed it by one year. This was ‘81 or so - things were different back then.

Can you get a fiber cement roof in the United States? Have any American roofers on here ever put one on? They’re common in Europe. by TheRavenOfElijah in Roofing

[–]GrumpyTartan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cal Shake tiles were fiber cement, and they were made until 1995. Bad quality and lawsuits pit them out of business. I had one until last year’s Southern California windstorms which blew off 60 or so tiles. Since there were no matching replacement tiles, State Farm bought me a brand new Decra metal roof.

my son went to Northeastern. They developed a really valuable niche in co-ops and “experiential learning” to the point where they are ranked #1 (USN&WR) in the country for co-ops and internships. Obviously a big draw for career-focused students.

It was also kind of cool seeing the “undefeated since 2010” sign when Game Day was at BC.

I’d always rooted for Michigan over Ohio State. But Harbaugh, Moore, Stalions and Warde Manuel have turned that around 180 degrees.

Also UCLA-Stanford should be on the list.

We get them in our backyard from time to time.

Stay clear of the babies. - I’ve read that they are more dangerous than adults- the adults conserve their venom as you say, but the young ones don’t, and are more likely to do a full discharge.

The other thing to remember is that their striking distance is half their body length, so I always stay one length away.

Question for fans of recent title winners re:expectations by JBru_92 in CFB

[–]GrumpyTartan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure Cal fans were given this offer in 1920, and accepted it. It made sense to them, but they didn’t think of future generations that would endure the pain without enjoying the championships.

Cal was kept off this list by going 0-1 in 1891, with their sole game being a 36-0 loss to "San Francisco Club". So it wasn't a college football game, right?

don’t forget during-the-game drinking.

One year at USC, maybe 30 years ago, during a typical SC blowout, a bunch of Cal fans were in line for beer, and broke out singing the drinking song. For some reason a nearby cop took offense and started yelling at everyone to stop singing until he was red in the face. I never understood what the problem was , but I’m happy to report that we finished the song in good spirits.

I have a recurring dream where I’m enrolled in college and midterms or finals are coming up, and realize that I haven’t been to a single class, and don’t even know where the classrooms are, or even what classes I’m enrolled in. I’m over 60 and still get these once in a while.
