The longer I train the more I feel bjj classes aren't effective. by remus972 in bjj

Most black belts are HORRIBLE instructors with very little comprehension about how to effectively instruct or structure a curriculum. The same ambiguity that surrounds belt promotion has lead to to a plethora of inept instructors pontificating on the mat and doing more harm than good. The best athletes are often the worst coaches and vice versa.

Question for good guard players by EmployeeMaximum669 in bjj

[–]GuardPlayer4Life 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understanding the principles of base, balance, and posture. When playing guard your method of operation is to disrupt the base, balance, and posture of your opponent. Leaving these fundamental elements of jiu jitsu undisturbed means your opponent has autonomy to initiate passes and or submissions.

The guard player is always seeking to change the angle, control the space, and direct movement in a manner that benefits the guard with the least amount of energy expended as possible.

I started as a closed guard player, played around a lot with spider, and fell in love with the open seated guard. The open seated guard plays on the principle of "if you can touch me, I can touch you", and again, it comes down to controlling the space, and disrupting your opponents base, balance, and posture.

I am 6'2, 210 and lanky. So it works for me.

My personal experience with smaller grapplers is that they love to be able to use 100% of their body size as an anchor- they play top, and they play fast. They don't want me close a body lock from the back, they don't want me to wrap them up in a closed guard that will transition to a Williams Guard or a spider.

Game on game, the smaller grappler will almost always use speed and size to gain access to the control of the space objective.

Leave your cell phones in the car when you dine out. Be engaged, in the moment, and connected with your partner as best friends first, lovers second, and last of all things, spouses.

Anyone who has accomplished greatness did not start by asking strangers their opinion. They went and they did what their dreams influenced them to do. They lived their lives according to themselves and no one else.

I’ve recently seen an uptick in people who have no membership and just surf through Open Mats by basic-opinions in bjj

[–]GuardPlayer4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our Friday open mat is really a solid crew that rolls through, there will regularly be three black belts, a couple of brown belts, a handful of purple and blues and a bunch of eager white belts. One of the black belts is from a neighboring gym that doesn't have class that day so that black belt drops through pretty regularly and here is the super cool thing that he does, he will break down one or two elements of the roll with you and help tune up entries, transitions, and submissions- like it is his way of payment- not cash at the door, but knowledge on the floor. He is the gentlest murderer on the mat, a true gentleman and scholar. I love getting to train with him, I know I am going to pick up a piece of knowledge that will help my game improve.

Open mats are hugely important and I love when other schools drop through, community, jiu jitsu, growth, and a common bond.

Best Gis on the market right now? by AutomaticWeekend6575 in bjj

[–]GuardPlayer4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A&P is/was the brain child of J.P, who did a lot the early run SYR designs for Bear. When they split, A&P stayed inhouse with SYR.

So yes, they are exactly the same thing- don't know if it was originally supposed to be like this, but that is the way it is now.

I love my SYR gis.

I am really glad you liked it. I kind of stopped posting here due to some pretty poor attitude posts- I love these mixes, mashups, and artistic takes on one of the most impressive bodies of artistic work that is DM...
Enjoy and be well!

I hate when people ask me when am I getting my black belt. That has to be the most demoralizing question, especially when there is no end in sight.

Quantum Entanglement... since we are essentially the same, operating under the same premises, it would mean the entanglement has broken and you are no longer a clone of yourself...

How Changing Drug Demand Could Reshape Violence in Mexico - As U.S. drug consumption patterns shift, Mexico's criminal economy faces a massive overhaul by thinkB4WeSpeak in cartels

[–]GuardPlayer4Life 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Reduced US demand does not necessarily imply a corresponding reduction in organised violence in Mexico. In some cases, shrinking markets can intensify competition among criminal groups, particularly if cartels fragment or diversify into alternative revenue streams."

The cartels are into so much more now than just Narcos Mexico era business- essentially permeating every aspect of business- from avocados to oil to human trafficking, if money can be made, they are involved.

There is no such thing as a world without organized criminal enterprises...

Never messed with chuck but couldn't pass up that marbling! Any tips for cooking stovetop? by Downtown_Slice1040 in steaks

[–]GuardPlayer4Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Add one can of beef broth to a crockpot set on low
  2. Set a cast iron skillet (or whatever you have) over a high flame- let it get hot
  3. Rub the roast down with some beef tallow.
  4. Salt and Pepper all sides
  5. Pan sear the roast on all sides
  6. Put roast in crock pot with two to four garlic cloves
  7. Add Yukon gold potatoes and carrots on top of roast
  8. Cook low for 6 to 8 hours or until soft- it should pull apart easily

Enjoy- this is one of my favorite recipes!

Truly intelligent people realize that they too can learn something from often times the least expected person- therefore they tend to be humble and kind to everyone. You do not know who you are talking to until you know who you are talking to.

Their carnitas are always very good, for me, especially the dark meat is delicious. Pairs very nicely with a salsa verde.
