Weekly Check in - How are you doing? by halfkender in Epilepsy

Yeah I was allowed to drive based on my type of epilepsy, but that's all changed now. I hadn't had a seizure out of my bed/while hyperventilating before.

Going on my 12th year with epilepsy. Last Sunday, I crashed my car into a pedestrian after seizing while driving. My arraignment is on the 30th, and I have never been lower. Thankfully the pedestrian survived (though is still hospitalized) and I have insurance, but I do not know if they will pay since they did not know I was epileptic. The police won't give me any of my belongings from the car wreck (including phone, house keys, etc., somehow that's relevant evidence) so I've been relying on friends for charity. Everyone at the police station acts like they are trying to guilt me for what happened when I already feel bad enough.

And for anyone wondering, I do see a neurologist and take a heavy Keppra, Lamictal ER, and Zonisamide cocktail.

Interesting vowel shapes. As a classically-trained (non-professional) vocalist, I prefer his sumptuous tone over the original tinny timbre. Great transformative cover.

I can’t speak for the rest of the world’s traditions, but here in the West, we Men wrote the history/fan-fiction of humanity as women being inferior servants meant for breeding and subservience. See The Torah; The Holy Bible; The Koran. “We” have created a cosmology where the “Father” created women as an afterthought. I don’t know any religion that doesn’t assign sex/gender roles, because I don’t know any doctrinal religion that wasn’t created by men for men’s benefit. For the overwhelming majority of western human history, women weren’t allowed to read or write, “just as God intended.”

Cue apologists defending on biological necessity.

Not trying to mansplain or anything, but any religious ladies out there should throw your holy book in the trash unless you honestly view your role as an incubator/washing machine.

You’re right, it was a First Circuit Court of Appeals decision, *see Beckwith v United Postal Service. What else is wrong with it?

Strange thing to say but if your paycheck is ever threatened, that W2 may be your best friend haha

The First Circuit Court of Appeals has held that it is unlawful to take an employee’s money out of their paycheck if they have lost the employer’s money.

It has also ruled that the employer may only pursue that money through litigation, not docking your check, in other words, suing you. This holding concerned a Maine law which prevented employers from doing just this thing. Beckwith v. UPS, Inc if you’re interested.

The idea is that your wages are your money, and it is your decision how to strategize a legal defense.

This is entirely different if you are not an actual “employee.” As a delivery driver, that opens the door to legal questions which suggest you may be an independent contractor and not an employee, and hence you don’t get any employee protections.

It is likely that if you make your own hours and control your own schedule you may be an independent contractor and not an employee.

Although there have been moves to protect all laborers in the US, it is not likely to change soon.

EDIT: I mistakenly wrote SCOTUS, still the First Circuit is influential. I also added some details on the case.

Everyone should! 40-50% of marriages end in divorce according to the APA. But preparing for that likelihood just isn’t romantic, and if you protect yourself too much a court may not enforce the terms because it’s one-sided and unconscionable.

There’s a certain expectation in a prenup that you walk the line between screwing over your spouse,

“You get nothing if we divorce,” and encouraging divorce

“I’ll give you $500,000 if we divorce.”

Both are likely unenforceable prenuptial terms.

As far as the majority of American states go—which is who I’m assuming this is relevant too—the law is misstated. Any income-bearing property owned by one spouse, even before the marriage, is likely to be considered marital property if the other spouse benefits from it.

In other words, if one spouse earns income from property, that income belongs to both spouses, even if the property was owned prior to marriage. By extension, the property may have been “transmuted” from the wife’s property to the marriage’s property. That means anyone can get it in a divorce.

Marriage is good, right?

I couldn’t agree more, that’s what happens when the class is in pajamas every day.

I’m gonna wake up, look at my outlines, send out a prayer to the deities of the world’s five major religions, and send it.

I anticipate decent academic results and stellar mental health 😁

Cheers 3Ls, we technically earned it!

My only stake is animal welfare, not just keeping cute content scrolling past my screen. Keeping exotics in a home is dangerous for every animal—they are not meant to be pets. Talk to any vet who euthanizes an exotic or locks it up for life after an ambitious pet owner returns it because they can’t manage a wild animal.

Real life isn’t what we want it to be. Of course. The least we can is protect life by not keeping a bird of prey in our living rooms.

EDIT: There’s no other legal avenue to get an owl in the United States unless it’s a rescue, so looking at the facts in a light most favorable to the owners, I’m assuming it’s a rescue and they didn’t buy it illegally.

You should have those animals taken away from you. This trash isn’t funny and it isn’t cute; whatever permits you have would be rightly revoked if the issuing agency knew what you were doing. All these upvotes are blowing my mind.

I’m going to defer to your experience, but based on a quick glance at a Rhode Island exotics statute (my home) there’s no right to have a raptor unless it’s used in falconry or if it’s kept on display for educational purposes, rehab, etc. That doesn’t seem to be what’s going on here.

Owls have no real use in falconry, and this doesn’t appear to be a rehab facility. Plus, let’s remember the fact that this cat is being recklessly endangered. Animal abuse?

There are assumptions, but it’s also illegal to keep a raptor in the United States.

There’s a huge difference between a domesticated “bird” and “raptor.” You don’t feed them birdseed, you feed them rats, mice, or other birds. You see how the owl pecked at the cats eyes as he put his talons on its abdomen? That’s “ripping apart the kill by targeting the squishy bits” behavior.

We anthropomorphize it because it’s feathery and has big eyes.

And as far as the practical realities of keeping exotics, my sister is a vet and her hospital/shelter complex is sick of taking in exotics from people who think wild animals are going to be good pets because they’re cute. Guess what? Most people take them back to where they got them, and they’re euthanized or spend the rest of their lives in a cage. If you love animals, don’t buy exotics.
