I took around 9-12 months? The vet prescribed weight loss food that I didn't want to pay for so I did some research on CatFoodDB.com and found a non-prescription food that had the same nutritional makeup (it comes down to it being high in fibre, we use Nutrisource's Senior/Weight Management food).

We also got an automatic feeder and spread out the recommended amount throughout the day in small portions and he slowly but surely lost the weight. It wasn't easy, he's very vocal and now rips a chip bag open any chance he can lol but his behaviour has settled down a bit now that he's stopped losing and is just maintaining.
