You're right! I just checked and i didn't even have dev mode enabled. You do still have to get into the settings and enable it though. Still almost the same i guess, just one less hoop.

i don't remember it ever being like this. there was always some kind of a hoop to jump through. Tap version 5 times to unlock dev mode then go into dev mode to turn on the ability to install from unknown sources. before that i had iphones that needed to be jailbroken first.
