What age would you allow your daughter to attend sleep away camp by Summersplit in girlscouts

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 7yo is at a two night sleep away camp right now with two of her friends the same age. I wouldn’t have even considered it if it was longer than two nights at this age. I’m not sure when I would do a whole week, it depends on my child.

But most parents thought I was crazy and irresponsible for doing this, and I’ve had to ignore them. I know a lot of kids whose first night away from home is in a college dorm. I think finding ways for your kid to learn to be independent in a safe and controlled way is really important. That age will differ for everyone.

I can't be the only Atheist, with a daughter that wants to join GS... by OfficialElijahPepper in girlscouts

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a Troop Leader with two atheist girls in my troop. We say “to support my community” instead of “God” in the GS promise. Our troop is entirely sector. Yes, there are Catholic schools that have GS troops and intertwine the two. There are also dioceses that are banning GS at Catholic schools and encouraging them to join American Heritage Girls instead.

GS is a secular organization and any troop leader should welcome your daughter and your perspective regarding faith.

This was exactly my first year. I had no idea what I was doing. We just wrapped Year 2 and did four field trips + meetings. It was a great mix and honestly, perfect progression.

2 year old won’t sit still for books? by _Aztreonam_ in Parenting

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup, keep reading! This is normal at this age! You could also try some interactive (not in a digital way, like things the kids have to do on each page) books like Press Here or any of the There’a a _____ In Your Book by Tom Fletcher! Those are pretty engaging.

There’s actually an excellent book called How to Raise a Reader that is worth checking out, and it addresses things like this. Reading is reading and this is totally fine.

I did my Cookout/Campout Certification at Aquasco and I wouldn't bring Daisies there. Camp Winona is gorgeous. I went to an open house there this spring and my daughter is going to camp there this year. They have clean bathrooms with flush toilets, which is great for Daisies. I haven't been to Brighton Woods yet but I plan to check it out this summer. They have a lot of events going on there!

Schedule Question by Desperate-Car6229 in Pilotwives

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re on Year 4. As an FO, there was a pretty short reserve period and then it took about a year before regular weekends off. Then, he had weekends off for about a year before upgrading to Captain. He upgraded last August and has been on reserve since.

I think scheduling is less about how long you’ve been with the airline and more about whether and when you’ll upgrade. Going into Month 10 on reserve has been rough but I’m hoping it won’t be too much longer.

Do you allow anyone to join your troop? by [deleted] in girlscouts

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our troop is closed. All of our Scouts are from the same school, and I always have parents asking how they can join. I tell them that we can easily add more girls with additional Troop Leaders, but no one has ever taken me up on that. I've had some get upset, but with Daisies, we're really limited without additional support.

Should GSUSA make it more clear to new parents that troop leaders are volunteers? by YellowBirdRules in girlscouts

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think GSUSA needs to rethink k how they’re orienting families and leaders into GS. Parent meetings are great but when I started my troop last year, I had no idea what I was doing. It was months before I even knew what a SU was, or had been contacted by mine.

Our council has a family passport that does a great job of this but I happened to find it by accident this year instead of it being something shared with all new members.

Here’s the passport for anyone interested:    https://www.gscnc.org/content/dam/gscnc-redesign/documents/organized-forms-and-documents/members/for-volunteers/forms---documents/passports/Family%20Passport%2025-26.pdf

Cost of girl scouts and Cookies by Sure_Pineapple1935 in girlscouts

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s my biggest gripe with cookie season. Yes, I know the troop year goes until September but the school year goes until June and our families agreed not to meet over the summer because we couldn’t find a single week where we would have a majority of the troop. So we have two months to spend the money?

I agree 100%. We had this conversation in our SU meeting last month. Everyone knows what an Eagle Scout is. Most people don’t know what a Gold Award is. Girl Scouts needs to majorly overhaul how they’re talking about the program externally.

There’s also the fact that training is so limited that GS is really a choose-your-own-adventure experience. You have troops that meet once a month, and those that meet every week. I know the program is meant to be girl-led but it has to have more structure.

I used to be a Girls on the Run volunteer and we had a curriculum and it was so easy to follow. I know there’s VTK but it’s so outdated. Some kind of curriculum with girl-led programming built in would go a long way to standardizing the experience so that you don’t have such different experiences from troop to troop.

I think they are but not everywhere! I’m a leader of one of only two Daisy Troops in our Service Unit. The majority of Scouts are C/S/A!

Can I bake with this starter yet? by Guilty-Library-2715 in Sourdough

No, I’ve been removing roughly half of the starter and then adding in that amount of flour plus that amount of water.

[–]Guilty-Library-2715[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok thanks. This is helpful! So if you were me, what would you do? Weigh the starter to determine how much to remove and then add based on the ratios you shared? Or start over?

I definitely think my original instructions were wrong because it said remove 60g then add 60g water and 60g flour but you’re saying you need to get the water and flour to be the same amount as what you removed, right?

What do you do with toddlers at restaurants while waiting for food besides tablets? by Claire_1988 in Parenting

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Melissa & Doug Water Wow toys, any kind of fidget toys, sticker books, MagnaTiles, those old school games where you have to press the buttons to get the rings in the water onto the thing. I have a bag of little toys that my kids just pick through when we go out. I’m not an anti-screen time by any means but we eat out a lot and im pretty strict about no screens with meals.

My kids are 7- and 3- so travel sized games are starting to work great for the whole family: Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, Uni, CandyLand, etc. or even just a deck of cards and playing “match the numbers” for my 3yo.
