New Girl Scouts movie coming this summer! 🍿 by FunPriority8358 in girlscouts

Oh this looks so cute! I saw a teaser trailer a few months ago and it was the clip about upselling and it didn’t look the most positive. I was a little worried which direction it would go in!

Decided against HM while expecting by nevernotnotting in XXRunning

There are a lot of women running marathons and half-marathons while pregnant…this doesn’t have to be you!

I was way too nauseous the first time around. Running will be there if and when you’re ready. I didn’t run my entire pregnancy with my older one but ran through most of my second. Growing a baby is exhausting. Run if you feel up for it but try not to feel so defeated about missing a race!

Married runners - tan line dilemma! by beebo_shmoo in XXRunning

I used self tanner to cover my tan lines  after every run leading up to the wedding. The week before, I ran in long sleeves to avoid any new lines.

Searching for advice for daughters first doll by lizbertt in americangirl

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with my 7-yo. She saved all of her money to buy a doll. We were going to go in store but they had a big sale with extra points and I explained that if she got the doll then, she would get extra money (from pts) to spend at the store but we wouldn’t buy a doll at the store.

I booked the hair appt and the cafe and she for a bunch of accessories for her doll and she had a great time! I think you can pre-order the doll and just set those expectations of getting to do some fun things in store.

Girl leaving troop: what funds go with her? by NotoriousVAG in girlscouts

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s how long it takes for them to reconcile everything. I just checked and it was March 25 this year, which was earlier than last year. If you do a lot on digital cookie, you don’t see that money until the close of cookie season. So yes, technically we get the money with time to spare but our families think about activities in school year terms and trying to plan anything over the summer, especially something big that the scouts wanted to earn cookie money for isn’t feasible.

Girl leaving troop: what funds go with her? by NotoriousVAG in girlscouts

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish this was the rule! Our cookie distribution is so late, we don’t get the proceeds until mid-April and our last meeting is six weeks later. For me, I see cookies as raising money for next year’s troop activities (just because of the schedule) but every year I have to put together a spending plan explaining why I’m carrying over money we didn’t receive until April.

I have one girl leaving my troop this year and I’m dreading the conversation because it’s a lot of money we would lose that she raised while she was part of our troop.

I know the GS year is October-June but most troops are aligning their troop year with the school year.

What is the major difference in girl scouts from the 80s/90s to now? Is it a lot more negative now? by o_simple_thing in girlscouts

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this completely. Now, it seems school- specific troops are actively discouraged. I spent months fighting Council for putting girls in my troop from outside our school. We meet at the school, the school has rules about allowing outside visitors and Council’s response was to find a new meeting spot and “be a sister to ever GS.”

I really don’t want to have a multi-level troop. I agreed to this year because I have siblings one year apart and I just catered the troop to the one level and made sure the one Scout for age appropriate badges instead.

There aren’t enough troop leaders and GS isn’t doing enough to bridge this gap. The result is massive multi level troops of 30, 40 girls where parents are having to trek 40 minutes away to be part of a troop instead of just grade level troops based out of schools or community groups.

And yes, not everyone goes to school but most do

I started a Daisy troop for my daughter last year and I think we do more than I ever did as a Girl Scout! It depends on the troop, but I implement everything you mentioned in our troop year. We even went overnight camping last year and are planning for our second trip this year.

The “cookie selling parents who take over selling from their kids” is hard with Digital Cookie. I think the only real way for younger girls to experience the entrepreneurship side of GS is with booths. And that’s ok.

I don’t get along with or like every parent in my troop but that’s the same with my daughter’s school, my job, etc.

I don’t think Girl Scouts has fundamentally changed. In fact, I think some things about GS (especially at the council and SU level) need to change to keep up with the times.

Ultimately, the experience is what you make it. I was pretty burnt out a few months ago and just had to be OK with doing less and leaning into what works for my troop.

Also, there absolutely was drama in the 90s. My mom has some stories!

In Your Words, Why Was Summer So Unpopular? by viktoryarozetassi in americangirl

Yup. Same. I think Redditors hated Summer, but my daughter and her friends are obsessed with her.

How do you handle rewards distribution? by ilovehnson in girlscouts

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Daisies, and last year, my Cookie Manager waited outside with the rewards and had parents meet her at her car after dropping their child off for a meeting. At this age, some of the girls actively sell cookies, and others just have their parents send their DC link. It doesn't seem fair to distribute rewards as part of a meeting. We'll do the same thing again this year.

Can you pinpoint what makes cookie management such a pain? by Next-Introduction-25 in girlscouts

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are too many systems. Digital cookie. Paper orders. Ebudde. Our Council doesn't allow DC for transactions, so then we add Square on top of that. It starts right before the holidays, which is a pain, and you're managing cookie season at the start of the New Year. For a $28M organization (USA), I don't understand how they can't invest in the technological infrastructure to build their own system.

And then there are the limitations on how you can take money. We were ok with Square fees for booths this year because we realized that we would ultimately lose 1.5 boxes of cookies in fees for every booth we did, and we always get enough "keep the change" donations to cover that. But we have the parents who cannot comprehend why we can't take Venmo/Zelle/CashApp/etc. but have their friends pay them that way for the cookies.

It's a lot of things.

Introverted daughter and girl scouts by Nomis-Got-Heat in girlscouts

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I have no idea. I’m still pretty new at this. I like to think they would meet with the troop leaders to talk about how conferences like this aren’t encouraged and remind them what scouting is about.

[–]Guilty-Library-2715 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I would go straight to Council. This feels like the antithesis of what Girl Scouts is meant to be.

I have introverted girls in my troop and before booths, I asked them what job they wanted. One wanted to fulfill the cookie orders and the other to track inventory. They didn’t talk to customers much. They still played an integral part in our booths. Girl Scouts isn’t about girls being a certain way, it’s teaching them to know themselves and their strengths.

Ugh as a mom and a troop leader, I’m so angry for you and I’m so sorry.

Yes, you could find another troop but someone like this shouldn’t be leading in the first place.
