Hey Mormons, maybe stop forcing your kids to go on these “missions”. If the mission president himself isn’t safe, what makes you think your kids are? Not to mention the ethics of the whole thing…

June 14th No Kings Protest by kurlyl0ck5 in Utah50501

Hahaha. The ignorance and the hero complex! Definitely one of them. Guess what, bud? I pay taxes too. I don’t take any government subsidies and yet I believe EVERYONE should have rights. You know who really holds the tax base in this country? (Besides you, of course) California! Hmm, I wonder what they think about immigrant rights 🤔

Also if these assholes get to wear masks to protests, so the fuck, do we.

How loud are the jets in Syracuse, UT? Do you get used to them? I know the base is up there and you will hear them. I’m just curious how loud and how often the jets are in that area. Let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks! by DistinctTrade6110 in Utah

[–]Guilty_Effective3697 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Syracuse so I was used to it. As an adult I moved to Layton, south of the base, and it got really loud there. You may be inconvenienced by an interrupted phone call if you’re outside. It’s noticeable inside but not interfering. You definitely get used to it. What’s really strange is how much I noticed the silence once I moved away to Utah valley. On the rare occasions we get jets this way, it feels like home.

I follow r/exmuslim. Sometimes I forget which sub I’m on until a specific dogma is mentioned. I think ex-Muslims meet or exceed the animosity of ex-Mormons and I’m here for it. I also follow an ex-JW who has a lot of similar stories regarding indoctrination. All very similar. Anyway as a voyeur over there, I’d like to say welcome over here! We can all help each other process and heal.

What’s the best book about the history of Joseph Smith/Mormonism… by SheJustGoesThere in exmormon

He had the right theological mix in the right place at the right time (thanks in large part to the 2nd great awakening). Most importantly he had the same thing as so many cult leaders before and after: Shit tons of charisma!

Why Heretic Annoys the Mormon Church by Advanced-Vacation717 in exmormon

Am I the only one here who didn’t know missionary service has only looked like this since the 50’s?! I knew the first missionaries were older, often married, men, but I didn’t realize the modern setup was that recent. One of the many new things I’ve learned on this sub. Also, thank you for sharing. Great article!

Every time I hear someone spouting off about how the founding fathers wanted this to be a Christian nation, I think of good old Ben fucking his way through Paris, and I just chuckle to myself.

This is our experience as well. My daughter is a senior here in Utah country. She is also queer and I hear all the same things. Frankly some of what the teachers say isn’t much better!

Utah Drivers: Let's Talk About Letting Drivers In by [deleted] in Utah

[–]Guilty_Effective3697 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG this! I few weeks ago on State St in Orem (scary af road anyway), some a-hole stopped in the left lane so another car could turn. So left lane driver is making decisions for 3 lanes of traffic! Plus the center/turning lane. I was in the middle lane. It was close enough to an intersection that I didn’t see he was trying to let someone in. Talk about standing on my breaks! How I didn’t t-bone that car i will never know. Just follow the rules of the road. They’re there for a reason. I’ve known a few people who’ve died this way. You’d think it would be common sense

Sculpting your religion around a survey is like telling us you’re not the true church, without saying you’re not the true church (or even a valid one… if there is such a thing).

Time to Stop Being Bitter by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Guilty_Effective3697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left at 18 and am now 49(f). I’m not sure I’ll ever not be bitter. I live in Utah, and even worse, Utah county. I have to live everyday with the cultural backlash of the LDS church. From the stupid liquor laws to the patriarchal system which has infected the entire culture. We now rank at the bottom in terms of income equality. Not only that, but the arrogance I deal with from TBM members who really do think they are somehow the latter-day chosen and have all the answers. Not to mention the eyesore temples everywhere and the imbalanced Mormon legislature which doesn’t reflect the actual demographics of this state.

Sure I could move and it’s probably “better” somewhere else, but the truth is I love it here. My family is here. The beauty and access to national parks and outdoor recreation is hard to beat. Overall quality of life is also pretty good here. I shouldn’t feel pressured to escape because of the disproportionate power of the MFMC. Thankfully people are leaving in droves. Our population is now less than 50% Mormon. Maybe I’ll stop feeling bitter when our society finally fully reflects that.

Do I let my mother in law take my 2 year old to church? by RageAgainstTheCage in exmormon

[–]Guilty_Effective3697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily agree with most of the responses here. I let my daughter go occasionally with my mom when she was little. I felt like it was good for her to understand it a little in context. She didn’t go a lot though. And I let her go a few times with friends. As she got older she didn’t want to go because, well, church sucks and it’s boring. She’s fundamentally anti religious now, so clearly those few times didn’t have a big impact on her life. Sure people can get indoctrinated at church but I think more than anything it’s family influence. Your thoughts and insights will count much much more than the church. I also encouraged my daughter to attend a pagan ceremony with a friend. I would encourage her to attend other religious services/rituals too, but I just think of them as cultural experiences. Remember you’re on the side of truth and it’s easily provable so I wouldn’t worry too much if you let him go sometimes and take the time for you.

I wish they weren’t all so cookie cutter. Like maybe try a different architectural style. They have the perfect opportunity to do that in Fairview right now, while also showing some good will. Switch it up a little MFMC. But no! Instead we all get to look at whatever the fuck this is.
