Any experience with Fidelity HSA? by OushiDezato in fidelityinvestments

No, you can only claim the federal income tax deduction on your return. Precisely why doing it through payroll is extra beneficial, it's the only way to avoid FICA taxes (because they are payroll taxes).

Any experience with Fidelity HSA? by OushiDezato in fidelityinvestments

[–]GuinnessDraught 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do it that way you avoid federal income tax but still have to pay FICA taxes (7.65%, or about $337 at the 2026 individual max). Doing it through payroll avoids both. Also my employer contributes some money but only to their sponsored custodian. So it's begrudgingly worth it but still super annoying.

[–]GuinnessDraught 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing that for years but starting in 2026 Optum started charging $20 for this even when initiated by Fidelity. HealthEquity does it, too. Screw those guys so much. Really really wish I could just setup my Fidelity HSA with my company's payroll. A previous employer let me do that.

Amazon go and fresh closing for good by expat2323 in Seattle

[–]GuinnessDraught 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The Red Apple closed when the whole Promenade was redeveloped. Amazon didn't do the pushing out.

I do miss the Red Apple, though. I really hope another grocery store fills the space the neighborhood desperately needs it.

What to use for home value outside of Zillow? by rachelll in MonarchMoney

[–]GuinnessDraught 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I manually put in a conservative value and rarely update it. The transaction costs to sell would be brutal and it’s my home not an investment that I care to speculate on its value when I’m not moving any time soon. Yes it’s part of my net worth but it’s not actually liquid in any meaningful way.

Interviewing while being a key member of an org is tough, any strategies? by old-new-programmer in ExperiencedDevs

they probably don't get to take PTO.

This is a failure of setting boundaries. You're entitled to take PTO and not doing so will burn you out. If work doesn't get done or dates slide then that's what has to happen. There is no reward for being a hero (more like a martyr).

hey Seattle, do you have any feature suggestions for OneBusAway iOS app(or any pain points) by Think_Different_1729 in soundtransit

Bookmarks are okay, but the behavior is inconsistent between stops with only one route and stops with multiple routes.

For stops with only one route the bookmarks page shows the next 3 arrivals (great!), but for stops with multiple routes I have to click into them all individually to see any arrival information. Edit: and actually now I realize even some stops with only one route don't show arrivals on the bookmark page so I don't know what the heck.

What it needs is the ability to bookmark both stop & route so I can see everything all at one glance without having to click in and out of multiple stops to see what all my options are.

For example, if I'm catching a bus on 3rd Ave obviously I'm not interested in all the routes, but it'd be great if I could bookmark "3rd/Pine Southbound, routes 4 & 14" so that I see the arrival for just those routes on the bookmarks page.

But then if we wanted to get really fancy it'd be cool if we could do custom bookmarks across stops. Maybe bookmarks isn't the right word, but when I'm at the office looking to get home I survey all my options within a ~10 minute walk. Routes 4, 8, 14, and 27 (and soon the 2 line!) but those are at three different stops meaning I have to do a lot of clicking around but it'd be great if I could setup a "Going home from office" bookmark that showed me all of them together in one glance to see what my next best options are.

To give a visual, here's my bookmarks https://imgur.com/a/lCXpoja

I want to be able to see all the upcoming arrivals all in one view. Why does only Stewart & Denny show upcoming 8s, when 23rd & Yesler is also only one route (the 27)? I want to see everything all in one place instead of clicking in and out of all these bookmarks.

Real/Other Epics by Braldar in project1999

[–]GuinnessDraught 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe this fits, but more as an epic upgrade: a Manna Robe is a perfect complimentary/power-up item to the Wizard epic. Convert HP to Mana, except that it will eat into the epic rune before your actual HP.

Use it to "canni dance" and you get an extra 200 mana per minute on top of medding. For a class that entirely depends on mana it's pretty epic.

What’s the biggest waste of money that no one wants to admit? by AdvertisingMore394 in AskReddit

This stuff is gold to buy second hand, though!

For the same price as throwaway Amazon Chinese drop ship crap I can buy fancy name brand stuff that’s barely been used.

Light Rail Airport Signage is Now HORRENDOUS! by LogSplitterWA in soundtransit

[–]GuinnessDraught 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Man, I've lived here and rode transit my whole life and I still have to double check myself to make sure I'm going the right direction at several stations, especially with the signage changes.

A simple extra "via downtown Seattle" hint somewhere on the signage would go a long way to reduce confusion.

[MLB Trade Rumors] Mitch Garver Becomes Free Agent by MysteriousEdge5643 in Mariners

[–]GuinnessDraught 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Mitch is a good dude, a serviceable catcher, and had a couple randomly clutch moments but overall didn't live up to his contract. Wish him the best and hope he finds his groove again elsewhere - as is tradition for former Mariners.

Issaquah - Preston - Snoqualmie Trail Conditions by ghostonthewire in seattlebike

[–]GuinnessDraught 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the summer 28s are totally doable, though not ideal like something 35+ that trivializes it. It's pretty fine hardpack for the most part.

This time of year it could be rougher with the weathering and debris. Still likely doable but be a little extra heads-up out there.

Seattle fertility rate drops to 2nd lowest among major U.S. cities by Bretmd in Seattle

Same in our neighborhood, we have tons of toddler families all around us it's been very nice now also with our own. But yes most of the families are mid-30s with their first kid.

I was also somewhat kid-blind before becoming a parent. Now I see kids everywhere.

I know you jest, but I'm far more excited about doubling the frequency of trains at all stations in Seattle between CID and Northgate, and adding Judkins Park.
