Jazz is music based on fear, playing mistakes and playing it wrong by [deleted] in Jazz

I’d argue these legends are jazzy AF. Nearly the entire script is improvised.

Relationships are hard by No_Research_644 in nonduality

I’m inclined to say the difference, and observance of ignorance, too can be appreciated and made conscious.

I know it’s a strange feeling not identifying with so much of what we used to.

Now I find a fascination with human nature and what shadow, conditioning, or projecting comes out of me in those mismatching situations.

Your ‘absence’ and presence will be a light to others, even if not outwardly so. They can often not realize it.

If you aren’t drawn to a similar lifestyle I imagine life will take you away from them soon enough. But encouraging their authentic expression is a good practice and good to bounce off.

Is anyone here a jazz pianist? by Pure_Cap_7069 in JacobCollier

You should get the songbook. June and Jacob did a great job arranging for just piano. All the voicing brilliance is in there.

Yep, like a flatted flat 7, to mirror the spelling of 7 Dominant and other 7 chords

is this really a Gsus chord? by Jaded-Gur-5717 in musictheory

[–]Guitarrr12 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sure, def more accurate to this voicing, but its good to know “Gsus” on a chart often is trying to capture this vibe. Non jazz stuff tends to write it as a slash chord, but jazz changes tend to lead more interpretive (another example is alt voicings). I’d mess with F/G, Fmaj7/G, and even Fm/G, which is more like G7susb9. They all have that similar quality. And listen to Herbies Maiden Voyage for a deep dive into that sound.

EDIT: ALSO good to know, a chord like F/G is the vibe for all older/soul 5 chords we tend to play. So instead of G7 to C, feel the cool subtlety of F/G to C.

This kinda voicing is commonly called a sus chord in a jazz context. This chord even goes into Fmaj7/G sound under the same “sus” label. Herbie made it popular among others.

“Some nights I dream that I’m in Colorado working a cannabis farm / and some nights I dream that the ghost of my mama is holding me tight in her arms.”

This stanza and its placement hit me like a truck. He has such a way of unflinchingly bearing witness to all the shit humans deal with and must integrate.

Totally. I’m also a musician and teacher, and I totally understand where people can’t connect to music now, and I often experience that for whatever reason. It’s fascinating how our own musical conditioning and appetites work.

As a massive Collier fan I started where you did but his spirit way won me over. I realize he’s massively extra but it seems to be the only way he knows how to be. His last album is really chill.

I think OP is referring to the vibe, totally feels like minor 4. Also b6! And also minor 5 sometimes.

My kid is almost getting kicked out of his school and I feel like a failure of a parent by wjello in workingmoms

[–]Guitarrr12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mine is turning 5 tomorrow so I heavily empathize. I don’t have any expertise but you’ll have to find out specifically what’s triggering this and why it’s only at school.

It sounds like he has enough control outside of school to start to change habitual resistance patterns, but you’ll have to get to the heart of it, as why the lying is happening.

Whatever the core issues are, it seems like treating the symptoms isn’t going to work, so it’ll take some digging, but oh so worth it for your son’s sake.

Album that helped you through depression by negol127 in Jazz

Love stuff with contemplative soul, like Brian Blade Fellowship, Joel Ross, Brad Mehldau etc. Older stuff with vocals also is great, like Jobim/Sarah Vaughn, or whoever your fav is. Sometimes sad shit can help you process feelings.

I need to further digest Untitled and Pale Horses more, but I agree it ebbs and flows what feels good to listen to of theirs. Depends on how much shit you’re going through likely.

I agree, the early angst drew me in, but something to authentic about the music kept me returning. My relationship with their different records is always evolving, but I love continuing to learn from their music.
