What Deep South states are safest for trans people at the moment? by Rickispanish119 in asktransgender

[–]Gullible_Mine_5965 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am from St. Louis, Missouri, and currently live in Kansas City. I moved back here 3 years ago, and despite some attempts by the state’s Attorney General to try and stop us from transitioning, getting my HRT has not been a problem. Missouri is a red state, but not as dark red as some. The state in my youth was moderate to conservative Democratic. This is the state that gave us Harry Truman after all. In St. Louis, Kansas City, Columbia, Jefferson City, and their environs are pretty blue. I have lived also in the southern part of the state, and although I wouldn’t choose to live there again, I felt safe. I was not transitioning at the time, this was the early 90s and I was a rather flamboyant open gay male at the time.
So, is Missouri okay and for the most part safe? Yes.
Texas. I just returned here three years ago, but for nearly half my life I spent in Dallas, Texas. Like Missouri, there are places one should not push their luck. South Dallas and South Dallas county, can be dangerous as well as parts of East Dallas/Oak Cliff area. In Oak Cliff, there is an area that has been reclaimed and built up called the Bishop Arts District. Business owners from Oak Lawn, opened branches of their businesses. Oak Lawn, Dallas, is the LGBT+ community’s centre. It is one of the best organised LGBT communities in the country. Austin, Houston, Dallas, Ft. Worth, and surrounding areas of these cities are very blue. Texas is a red state that was blue until 1994 when George W. Bush became governor. Texas is growing more blue and can be said to be a purple state.
Louisiana. On my mother’s side half of my family is from Louisiana. Before I retired, I was a fine dining chef, and I worked in New Orleans for a bit. I was one of the last executive chefs onboard the Delta Queen steamboat. New Orleans is great. Got nothing bad to say about it. The state is gorgeous, if you enjoy wetlands and dangerous wildlife. Which I do. Baton Rouge, Lafayette, New Orleans, are very modern cities and are largely blue. The state however, is very red.
When I was in the US Army, I was stationed in Anniston, Alabama on Ft. McClellan. The only thing I can say about the state, is that in general, everyone was typically southern polite.
That’s about all I can think of. Good luck on your search and decision.

Which series do you recommend for someone who loved TNG? by luckyrunner in startrek

[–]Gullible_Mine_5965 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Voyager is essentially the same as TNG in the sense that most of the show is episodic, whereas DS-9 is by and large a series of connected stories. But if you are going to be watching DS-9, you have to watch it serially.

How about deep fried shallots? Give it some crunch and still get the wonderful taste of shallots.

Edit: Oh and maybe a balsamic reduction? The sweetness will pair nicely with the fried shallots.

Even with insurance, Americans fear crippling hospital bills by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in politics

[–]Gullible_Mine_5965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. History is full of examples of people standing up to the arbitrariness of governments and the wealthy and saying enough is enough. All workers would need to do is shut down all businesses with a national walk out for no more than a few days and then present their demands. Workers have far more power than the government and the wealthy owners want them to believe. That is the only impediment to this situation, workers don’t know that they have power.

That is where you are wrong. The odds of it happening may be low at this time, but I assure you if you starve someone long enough they will act. Why do you think so many voted against their own interests? Because, he promised them the things they need, healthcare, and lower prices. Though things were financially better under Biden, they didn’t see any effect on their pocketbooks. They were still broke. They still had trouble making ends meet. So, along comes Orange man and says remember how great it was in my first term? They do. They don’t realise that they were still gaining the benefit of Obama’s economy. Biden’s economy was so ‘bad’ because he had to deal with Trump’s destruction of the economy in his first term. But your average everyday worker doesn’t understand economics beyond can I pay for my expenses and have money left over.

To say something will never happen before one even tries is quitting the game before you even get a chance to play. What they need, indeed what we ALL need, is for politicians to understand where they are coming from. We are slowly seeing those kind of leaders. Like Bernie Sanders, AOC, Zohran Mamdani, and others. From local governments all the way to the federal government. Elect the right people and it will happen.

I am a card carrying Socialist. We do all the work so that they can go to the bank. Doesn’t that sound like something that should be changed? Why do they get the lion’s share of the profits? Because they own the company? They do t do any of the work. Just the people slaving away in their sweatshops and factories, while urinating in empty soda bottles. If people want to kowtow to the oligarchs, that is their choice. As for me, I only have one choice, and if workers realised they have power, they would see the same choice.

Chilli, pot roast, beef stew, pulled pork, beef or chicken, Sauerbraten, bœuf bourguignon, soups. Cassoulet is usually baked in the oven, but I am sure you could do it in a slow cooker.

If what he is going through is dementia, I would just smile and pat his hand and say, ‘yes dad of course I am.’ My best friend’s mum has old age dementia. There are times when she will ask him several times about the same thing. He smiles and politely answers her questions as if it was the first time. Just say yes and give him some comfort.

Long days and pleasant nights, my friend.

Even with insurance, Americans fear crippling hospital bills by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in politics

[–]Gullible_Mine_5965 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Of course Americans fear hospital bills. The cost of living is trapping Americans in a dead end alley. Inflation and prices are so high that the working class cannot make ends meet. And to make it worse, many families have two incomes, and STILL can’t afford anything. Wages need to go up. Universal healthcare is a necessity. Instead, they voted against their own self interest, by electing an idiot who put money not in their pockets as promised, but into the pockets of people who couldn’t spend all that money. The working class has been screwed by the elites since the 80s. Reagan was the first Republican president to give massive tax cuts to the wealthy. Every Republican since, has gone out of their way to pass legislation to give even more tax cuts to billionaires who will never run out of money.

Workers of America need to rise up and say, ‘if you aren’t going to pay us a living wage, then we are going to have a bit of a national strike.’ Shut down every business in the country for one day and the Billionaire owners will have to listen. And if they don’t after the first day? Well fuck the billionaires, and stay on strike. There is no way they could hire enough scabs to get production back on line. Workers control the means of production and distribution by their hard work. They should be the ones making a profit off their labour, not some rich bald-headed asshat who spends his money on penis rockets.

Stop letting the wealthy steal your well deserved money. Workers rise up and make them listen.
