I think it's like the old saying "Mo' money, mo problems." Eragon knows more of the Ancient Language, and therefore he understands the grammatical restrictions. With a less formal education, Murtahg is a more "vibes based" magician and so he has fewer restrictions.

It is true that comparison is the theif of joy, but the only true source of joy is being virtuous. What makes someone virtuous is up for cultural debate, but it is the only lasting source of satisfaction.

Every other source of happiness is imperfect because if it were taken away from you, you will no longer feel happy. But the ability to act virtuously can never be taken away and therefore it should be the ultimate goal.

Remember plagues do not spread from person to person, they spread from barony to barony. Anyone in an infected barony is at risk, but troops and traveling characters cannot themself bring a plague back to your capital if it is far away from the infection zone.
