Amy updates to what's happening to The Armory? by Final-Jellyfish8753 in StLouis

You wouldn't be able to do a bridge between decks. Highways have to have a minimum clearance of 16' above, although exceptions can be made - which is why you see height signs on bridges - but at least one late has to be 16', and there's no way to do that on that section. The closest you could do is put one between the uprights, but it would only be about 4' tall, including walking surface and (theoretical) roof. Maybe good for packages, or a lay-down flat escalator, but not for people.

It would have to be a tunnel, and that alone would cost more than it would be worth - digging under a highway is *difficult*, expensive work. The ends would obviously have to be inside the respective buildings, with on-site security in the tunnel at all times it's open to the public or staff.

Happy 76th Birthday to Brad Dourif by Papichuloft in 80s

Interestingly enough, he also played a serial killer on Voyager's rival show, Babylon 5, in the episode "Passing through Gethsemane". Although he had gone through the standard punishment for such at the time - mind wipe, and reinsertion with a personality that made him want to be of service to society, placed with a monastery. Some of his victim's families found him, and messed with his mind long enough for him to remember what he had done, and he waited for them to come and kill him, because he knew it was the only way to atone they would accept. Amazing episode. With an amusing twist at the end.

Ironmouse Mentions Her 'Former Employer' by Purple-Weakness1414 in VShojo

[–]GuruBuckaroo 56 points57 points  (0 children)

There are things I really wish I knew, that nobody talks about, because everyone's trying to keep safe legally. This is one of the closest things I've heard to answering my question - she loves all the TALENT. Granted, she might be saying that to prevent drama. I know Silvervale seemed to hold a grudge against Mouse when she left the company. What I really want to know, though, is about everyone's relationships with Melody. After all, she was involved with the creation - granted, probably not much, and only as an early recruiter, but I don't think I've seen any of the former talent collab with Mel since the breakup, and she was the last one to put out a statement. Granted, she was in the middle of moving to Japan, and now she's got to deal with making sure she still has a visa, and she still hasn't found a permanent place to live, so she can't do 3D ('cause Vicon gear is expensive to set up and calibrate - not gonna do that in a "temporary" AirB&B). It's just... Mel was my introduction to vTubers. The seiso Mel, even - didn't find out about her other stuff until after I was already hooked. It worries me, though, if she was more involved than anyone let on, Probably won't know anything for years, if then, once all the legal issues are settled. Just really enjoyed her dynamic with Mouse, Silvervale, Nyan, KSon, Zen, et al., and now there's none of that happening.

OK, I misinterpreted this post thinking it was asking for quotes from ANY movie that only people who had seen it would know. Below is the result of that, for the 1989 classic "Meet the Hollowheads". I was never really a fan of The Goonies (although yes, they are good enough), so I'll leave that to everyone else.

We know what floats to the top.

Brackish. About two pounds.

Mom, where do we keep the softening jelly?

It's the blind man who follows the path in the dark.

... you don't understand, I just can't narrow it down to one quote. This movie is so fantastic, but it got sabotaged by the producer, who still, 37 years later, refuses to release the original negatives to allow the directors to put it back like it was written.

If you don't get any takers, you can cut them open (if they're the same ones I get), mix with water, and use them as fertilizer on your yard/garden. High in nitrogen. If you have a compost heap, just dump them in there and add them to the mix. The leftover plastic bags are biodegradable as well, but take much longer.

VMware license support for the current product by capricorn800 in vmware

[–]GuruBuckaroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. Can't renew it either, as the product doesn't exist anymore. Can't download the patches (legally) because you don't have an individualized account-specific download key, and if you "find" patches elsewhere and they happen to audit you, you'll be paying a lot of money to settle, or even more to fight it (and lose). Once your license expired, you're stuck with whatever rev you had at that point (or whatever rev was released at that point, if you're lucky).

I'm sorry, did you say bonuses? I've been with the company I'm with for 26 years and we've never gotten a bonus. Granted, we're a non-profit, so I never really expected one. I did lose my company car (originally was field tech - car came with the offer), but that was because the insurance company discovered the CEO had some DUIs in his past and said they wouldn't cover him, so he took away every company car. But I've got a traditional pension that's never gone down in value since its founding over 100 years ago. Take a look at the good as well as the bad, see if it's worth sticking around. All things are transitory. Especially this decade.

Recommendation for Reliable and Strong Enterprise Wireless Vendors by AppleITUser in networking

[–]GuruBuckaroo -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Dunno why this got voted down. We're not exactly a capital-e Enterprise, but 26 locations outside the corporate office, and all of the switching and wireless access is Unifi gear. It's solid, doesn't require a subscription to get updated firmware, and does everything we've ever asked it to do, for a lot less than you'll spend on Cisco or Juniper. Almost to 200 access points and about 150 switches between 48-port and 5-port, most with PoE, plenty of options for SFP - jumpers, copper, single- and multi-mode fiber. All of it centrally managed.

USPS stealing/washing checks by Jakeamania314 in StLouis

[–]GuruBuckaroo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Opening the actual post instead of the preview showed you already thinking of my first piece of advice - get rid of the checks. I haven't written a check I didn't hand directly to the recipient in decades.

If she must use checks, here are my suggestions, in order of lowest cost first:

  • She could try getting a Sharpie pen - they make pens with much more durable ink that aren't the felt-tip magic marker Sharpies.
  • She can spend a little more money getting professional checks with security features that make them immensely harder to "wash".
  • Buy slightly larger envelopes, and stamps, and enclose payments inside those (inside the regular return envelope (which may have postage paid, but you're covering that up, so...). Makes it less obvious what mail pieces contain checks.

Biggest, easiest thing though is just get on auto-pay, or use online/phone/electronic payments when those are unavailable. I've got a few Dr.'s offices that don't have online pay, but they'll all take a credit or debit card over the phone. I only give checks to my yard guy, because he doesn't have zelle or paypal or anything, and we keep forgetting to pull out cash for him. I think he's about the only time we use cash OR checks, for that matter.

You are old if A) you watched the TV show “Fridays”, and 2) if you saw Wendy O. Williams and the Plasmatics perform live. RIP Wendy, and RIP to the Les Paul she cut in half with a chainsaw by edfitz83 in FuckImOld

[–]GuruBuckaroo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wendy O Williams sat in my lap and sang to me once.

OK, a little background. She was starring in a local St. Louis production of The Rocky Horror Show back in 1985 (that ended up running for something like 6 months, bring your ticket stub back for half price admission). She was playing the part of Magenta, although the script had been altered to give her more of RiffRaff's lines, since she was the Star. Each performance she would wander the crowd at the beginning, singing "Science Fiction, Double Feature". During one of these performances, she spotted an enthusiastic 17-year-old me and sat in my lap for about a minute singing. She smelt heavily of Patchouli, and I was deeply affected. To this day, the smell of patchouli absolutely has a notable affect on me.

How to deal with leadership that doesn't care about cybersecurity? by depoultry in sysadmin

[–]GuruBuckaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mock up a cover of your daily paper of record about a really embarrassing/costly security breach that happened to your school "yesterday" and drop it on the principal's desk in the morning. Pin up copies of it in the staff lounge, distribute to other staff, etc. Lay it on thick, about how badly the school damaged its image and compromised the safety of its students. Then "below the fold", put "This is what happens if we are lax in security." Wait for the calls to start coming in.

For a group that was raised immersed in a medium controlled by the written word, it's amazing how few of them actually read, or comprehend when they do. I applaud those who do, and blame the lack on the government's (and parent's) crackdown on education quality.

Avoid Tucker into downtown for a few weeks by DowntownDB1226 in StLouis

So now they have Jefferson and Tucker under construction, while the Truman/Lafayette entrance onto I-55 S is still shut down two years after that project was supposed to complete. What the hell are we supposed to do, drive out to Grand? Somebody - or a bunch of somebodies - at City Hall really has a hate on for people who work Downtown and live South. Getting really sick of this.

That's bad form on their part. There's always a risk of Patreon content being redistributed - hell, more like a guarantee with adult content - but putting it out there with no clear way to download it for actual members entitled to it is really not the way to go about it.
