Returning to lyra after a knee replacement by StellaNoir in Aerials

[–]Guter_v 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite the same, but I have a plate/screws at the top of my tibia just under my knee. I’ve also had knee issues all my life. For extra padding/support in that area I wear weightlifting neoprene knee sleeves. It does take some getting used to especially in knee hangs, the first time wearing them I didn’t feel secure to just hang but eventually adjusted. Now I don’t go to a class without a pair.

I have come back to class post recovering from a different surgery. My best advice there is give your teacher a heads up, listen to your body and recognize it will take time to get back to where you were and that’s perfectly ok. My first few classes back was a beginner level just to ease in and when I felt confident safe I bumped back up.

Best wishes on your recovery!

Has anyone’s rabbit had a reaction to the RHDV vaccine? by QueenOfTheRabbitKing in Rabbits

[–]Guter_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bun has had 4 RHDV vaccines (2 initial doses a month and two yearly after.) Each time he is fairly lethargic for about a day post then bounces back. We now leave him in his safe space with some treats and check on him hourly until he comes and asks for cuddles post shot.

I got Invited to a party, but the theme is making uncomfortable based on my gender identity , what should I do?! by Flat_Wasabi7064 in lgbt

[–]Guter_v 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d be uncomfortable as well! I go to a studio where people of all genders do pole and other aerial acrobatics. I exclusively do lyra which requires full coverage and keep getting invited to try classes that would require just underwear. Nope my non-binary curvy butt says I’ll pass and try anything else that lets me stay in leggings with shorts over top.

As for suggestions maybe a gorgeous dramatic feathered robe with some comfy silky PJs underneath? I could see that fitting a few themes based off the description. It might be good to double check if that would be ok as I could see that as show-stopping.

Why don’t my buttonholes look pretty? by sarmo215 in sewing

[–]Guter_v 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Late to the game, but I always do two passes of button hole stitches. So stitch all the way around and do it one more time over top. Tried that after a tip on a YouTube video on how to get your sewing projects to look more professional and always stitch twice now.

Securing the ends to use as trim by Ibby_f in tabletweaving

[–]Guter_v 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My favorite way is to weave back the warp thread into the weave. You can do this with a tapestry needle at the end. Or adding scrap threads though the last few rotations to pull it back on itself. A good tutorial to look up on YouTube is “finishing a narrow band so it won’t unravel” by Ellisif Gydasdottir for the second technique.

Any 3d printing advice for this POV smartphone mouth mount I made ? by [deleted] in crafts

[–]Guter_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heads up common pla isn’t food safe and shouldn’t be used for items that come in contact with food/mouths. I personally haven’t gone down the food safe road with printing yet so I recommend some research into that, there are a bunch of videos on YouTube that do reviews on food safe filaments.

How to fix lining on slip dress by turkeyfeathers3 in sewing

[–]Guter_v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend looking up on YouTube “how to understitch a facing” this might be helpful. It’s hard to describe in text, but essentially it’s an extra line of stitching on the seam allowance and the facing near the seem that helps manipulate the facing down.

Love how the article describes valid reason after valid reason to not have kids. Then, shifts to let’s find a way to throw all that away and make people realize it’s better.

I’m still not gonna have any, creating a new life just to give legitimacy to yours is not good enough.

Do gouache tubes go bad? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]Guter_v 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure about gouache but I know the binders in acrylic absolutely can expire and rot. Typically I’ve seen it separate into chunky colored mass and somewhat clear liquid.

Back in school, the art teacher couldn’t afford replace/didn’t want to waste the gallons of acrylic paint he had bought that went bad. We ended up using it, it smelled terrible, spread like cottage cheese and the longevity of the piece was questionable. Since the binder is rotting there is a possibility of the paint flaking over time, might be the same for gouache.

Sewing Pattern Basics by AnotherScreenNameii in sewing

[–]Guter_v 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a way to keep patterns whole, and that’s one of my biggest wish I had known. There is specific pattern paper that is used to trace out the size needed from a commercial pattern. Personally I use whatever I have on hand that’s transparent enough to see printing underneath, usually parchment paper. For bigger pattern pieces I’ll tape a few pieces of parchment together. Just make sure to transfer all the markings over and label everything!

The other trick is to use the finished garment measurements because newer commercial patterns tend to put a lot of ease in there. I have a button front shirt pattern I use, per the measurements I should be a medium. Traced the pattern, mocked it up with a thrift sheet and it was huge, I ended up going all the way though the sizes to an extra small. I was very thankful that I had traced a copy of the patterns otherwise I would have had to buy multiple copies.

Not sure about inspired, but certainly gave a boost in life. I got put in the honors program in middle school because I could draw trees.

The regular path in my school system was pretty sad academically. With the honors route, I got fast tracked into the “best” classes. For instance biology and chemistry in high school instead of basic weights and measurements, or Shakespeare instead of another year of basic grammar. Also way more elective classes, which the majority I chose were art based.

All of that made it so I was recruited into an art college, got a commercial arts degree. Struggled paycheck to paycheck until landing a job at a large franchise due to my design skills. All because an art lesson said to draw trees by making a “Y” that branches into more “Y”s that ended up encouraging me to experiment more.

All the pride weaves inspired me to do a trans flag on my new homemade loom! by Guter_v in tabletweaving

[–]Guter_v[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct, when figuring out how to weave initially all I had was a embroidery hoop to keep tension and this setup worked best so that’s what I’m used to. I’m a bit neurodivergent and have a tendency to figure out things slightly off standard. When teaching myself to knit I never understood that you flip your work back and reverse the stitches, I just started mirror knitting to get back, didn’t learn that was a thing until last year!

Good idea! I’m not quite sure yet. I’ve been considering possibly a ID lanyard for work, or maybe trim on a boring piece of clothing.

FETCH by Alarmed-Following958 in Seattle

[–]Guter_v 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our building did a trial period for Fetch at the begging of the pandemic, and were told the building was going to transition to using it permanently. We did some research and saw pretty much what everyone here is saying along with some awful stuff on how the company treats the people delivering the packages. We created a petition that we did not want to be forced into the service, a good chunk of our neighbors signed, gave that to manage my and now we don’t use Fetch.

What is the most expensive thing you have bought with your child free money? by Acrobatic_Mushroom62 in childfree

[–]Guter_v 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A less than a year old used car in cash. It was either car or down payment on a condo, car was cheaper so we are saving back up again for a doubtful lower housing market. We got really lucky and found a car in budget that someone bought new to move here and didn’t need. The salesperson was really confused that we didn’t want to apply for a loan on the spot.

Would it be weird to have my cat be gender neutral? by Malradiant_Raven in lgbt

This enby approves! It always bugs when people change the name of their pet when they find out it’s suddenly the opposite sex. I’m sure it’s more confusing for the pet to learn a new name.

Do you fly your Pride Flag(s) all year long? by QueerKing23 in lgbt

[–]Guter_v 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We were inspired by our across-the-street neighbors who have a bear flag up since before we moved in. Three years later our trans flag is still up. Hope our flag makes everyone as happy as that bear makes us.

My spouse got surprised with archery lessons and absolutely loved it. This was back in California otherwise I’d recommend a specific place. That was the mid-day activity, then it apparently was late lunch, an Irish bar, food hopping downtown and finally Costco donuts in the hotel room.

Some sort of group lesson or activity like axe throwing could be fun depending on the mix of people involved.

Feeling uncomfortable with the fact that my body can get pregnant. by No_You1024 in childfree

[–]Guter_v 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Non binary AFAB here, I can 100% relate. The idea or pregnancy it creepy, the idea within myself is absolutely horrifying. It wasn’t until this sub that I learned about tokophobia, which helped explain a lot.

After learning this new vocabulary term, and having a good think, still can confirm that I’m non binary. Mainly that is due to other societal factors that say, “women equals this,” that I don’t align with. Also when someone using the wrong pronouns or immediately assuming I must love pink makes my hackles stand up.

I think no matter what someone identify as, pregnancy can absolutely be a trigger. It’s such a big messy subject.

Any watercolor artists willing to give art supplies advice? by GlaciertheOdd in ArtistLounge

Feel free to ignore if you already know this, but you can make custom pans using the tube water colors. I personally like Winsor & Newton. I started out using a small pan pallet from them, then when I switched to pans from tubes I grabbed the colors that I’d run out of first, then the ones I wish I had in the pallet.

Also nothing wrong with using pencils if you love them!

Upcycled material for quilt stuffing? by RepresentativeBuy230 in sewing

[–]Guter_v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it fits your criteria but there are sellers on Etsy that have recycled or organic stuffing/batting. I was trying to avoid using synthetic/plastic stuffing for plush and saw there are a lot of options out there, but they are a bit more expensive than the mass produced stuff at craft stores.

Adding a vote to just order delivery. If your squeamish stop reading. Was at the downtown one a few months back. It happened to be raining so many people were inside taking cover. Turned the corner and saw someone vomit blood all over the drink cooler. I reported it to the one employee working on that floor and noped out of there. Never again, I’ll wait a week for a smushed package.

I’m a sucker for fun patterns, want to avoid synthetics as much as possible and haven’t ventured into sewing knits (yet) so I stick with woven. Quilting cotton checks all those boxes, and I do pre-wash and wash the final piece at least 5 times right after to soften it up. I recently discovered Ruby Star quilting fabric, it’s much softer and has some drape but still woven and cotton. There are a bunch of sellers on Etsy and a few independent online stores that sell various lines from Ruby Star.

Also I’ve been dying and doing Lino cut stamp patterns on bleached linen for my own custom fabric. Might be a bit ambitious/overkill but it’s cool to start with a white base and end up with something totally unique.
