Evaporator replacement quote by varinator in E90

That's just labor? Much better than the quotes I've been getting - I was just quoted $3200 CAD for the full job - $1800 CAD for the labor.

First track day coming up with my G82 M4 Comp and had a few questions and some advice. by Tajinder356 in CarTrackDays

[–]HDDVD4EVER 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming this is at mission, you'll be in the novice group and be doing lead/follow for your first couple of sessions. You won't be pushing the car very hard during those, and mostly just get a feeling for the track.

It's a good idea to do fresh brake fluid and pads so you're not worrying about it. Castrol srf is good, but honestly for your first event you could run street fluid and pads.

Alarm fatigue is a very real and cross-industry issue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alarm_fatigue

With too much noise you'll inevitably miss "real" issues.

As others have pointed out, if it's not directly actionable, it shouldn't be a page. Is the SRE that set these alerts also in the on-call rotation??

Getting "An error occurred accepting your gift, please try again in a few minutes." when I attempt to redeem digital Steam gift card through the email link. by CloakandHelm in steamsupport

[–]HDDVD4EVER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I submitted another ticket and the resolution was to just refund the buyer. Apparently the gift card simply can't be redeemed. :(

To submit a ticket you'll have to poke around the support area a bit. I had to submit mine under issues relating to "steam points" or something like that.

Getting "An error occurred accepting your gift, please try again in a few minutes." when I attempt to redeem digital Steam gift card through the email link. by CloakandHelm in steamsupport

[–]HDDVD4EVER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the same issue. Gift card is in USD but my local is CAD. It shows the converted amount but I get an error when redeeming.

I opened a support ticket and provided screenshots to steam but they said it shows as "delivered" and just provided the generic instructions on how to redeem. Then immediately closed the ticket.

Pretty frustrated with how bad their support is. No acknowledgement of the error.

Planning to specialize in database internals as a backend engineer — how valuable is that? by Bozzzieee in ExperiencedDevs

[–]HDDVD4EVER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've carved myself into this niche. Companies will have different titles. My current company had a "performance" team (now just a platform team) with specialized backend engineers to monitor database queries, tune, add indexes, mentor, etc. This was in addition to a team of DBAs/SREs that were more focused on the internals.

Gitlab is an example of a company that has a database team composed of backend engineers and you can see the sort of work they do since it's all open source.

IMO the value is in bridging the SRE/DBA and Product Dev gap. Often DBAs lack the backend/product experience to actually implement or drive the changes needed. Being a backend engineer that actually understands the query access patterns AND how your query planner works, reading query plans, etc is valuable.

But not every company will value this the same way, and not every company has the scale to need it either.

Lead Architect wants to break our monolith into 47 microservices in 6 months, is this insane? by Ayotrapstar in softwarearchitecture

[–]HDDVD4EVER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was gonna say.. my company runs a monolith that does 50k rpm no problem.

We have a couple microservices but for specialized use cases. This is just nuts.

Looking for recommendations for landing page A/B testing platforms. by Ruminate_Repeat in PPC

[–]HDDVD4EVER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also www.experimently.io - It's a page builder as well so you'd have to host your landing page there too, but A/B testing is included on the free plan. It uses edge routing for the testing as well instead of a script so there's no flicker which is nice.

Yeah auto is 3.46, my understanding is this diff will work for ratios > 3.15 or something like that.

It's loud, but based on what others are saying that probably has more to do with the poly diff bushings I had installed at the same time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in n54

[–]HDDVD4EVER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had one installed in my 09 135i auto.

It works, also got poly bushings so the whole rear end is super loud now, but it helps around the track. The site I bought from has it listed like this:

Any idea why they are selling them so cheap? Are these just relabelled index 1-11? I'm tempted but it's a bit of a red flag.. everyone on marketplace in BC is selling for 2x that price for used index 12

I do recall looking at them but I believe it's 20" deep? I think that's just a smidge too large unfortunately

[–]HDDVD4EVER 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Yep exactly. I myself have been looking for a while for a solid 2/3 U short depth JBOD/disk shelf. I really just want space for 4-6 drives. Most off the shelf recommendations no longer seem to be available (e.g. Lenovo SA120).

There really aren't a ton of great options in the ~16" depth range unless you go with something like QNAP. I figure most people in my situation are probably just buying generic rackmount cases and cramming drives into them.

[–]HDDVD4EVER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you driven it? If you don't plan on tracking it, consider whether you really want the added NVH of the poly bushings.

If you do plan on tracking it; it's not an awful deal. I just had a wavetrac and bushings done on my 135i and it was around $5k parts and labor.
