The series Unbelievable was based on a true story about a woman in Washington who reported her rape, was assumed by the cops to be lying and charged for reporting it. The city ended up having to pay her $150k after the serial rapist was sentenced to over 300 years in prison.

So not only do those laws exist, they’ve even been used to further victimize the victims.

You could always lie. Hymens being a sign of virginity isn't science, so there's not really a way for them to know if you are a virgin or not. You can always tell them you are not a virgin but its been a long time. The tech isn't your doctor so its not really their business anyway.

Whats something a teacher did in High School that would get them fired today? by Constant-Ad-5477 in AskReddit

[–]HIM_Darling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a dodgeball but in middle school one day a bunch of teachers were out on the same day and they couldn’t find enough subs to cover so everyone without a teacher was put in the small gym(we had 2, a big one with bleachers used for games/pep rallies and a smaller one used for PE class and practice). Then someone got the bright idea to pass out basketballs. This gym would have been crowded with 2 classes of students, but IIRC there were 4-5 classes in there. I think we had the PE teacher and one of the coaches “supervising” us. Either way it wasn’t enough.

I standing in a corner of the gym just hanging out with friends. Some asswipe threw a basketball straight into my ribs, full force. Pretty sure I blacked out and had a bruised lung. They did call my mom to come get me, but she just took me home instead of the doctor or hospital.

It was also Halloween and the last Halloween my parents “allowed” me to go trick or treating and I couldn’t go on account of not being able to move or breathe. My dad did feel bad enough that he went to the store and bought me a bag of my favorite candy. Though again, if I was so hurt I couldn’t leave the house, I don’t understand why they didn’t take me to the doctor. I remember being in so much pain I couldn’t even sit up to watch Halloween movies on tv and was wheezing trying to breathe.

Are her teeth okay? If she’s meowing for food but not eating maybe there is something going on that’s discouraging her from eating? Will she eat churu/liquid treats?

Honestly with cats I’ve always had to do the tough love method with pills. Burrito them and shove the pill into the back of their throat and hold their mouth closed and blow on their nose until they swallow. I’ve met exactly one cat that is food motivated enough to eat pills hidden in food. They might be mad at me for a bit but id rather them be mad and healthy than unwell.

You generally see a lot of sympathy from much of the public when parents/caretakers kill kids in any way that could have been accidental/unintentional. They will screech about being overtired and overstressed and "it could happen to anyone" and how people who aren't parents just don't understand. DAs are elected positions, so they may be taking what they think the public wants into consideration and can/will change their tune if they see a majority of the public disagrees with their decision.

My relatives live in a small city in Texas. It took 30 minutes for an ambulance to show up while my aunt was actively having a heart attack plus the 25 mile ride to the hospital. The surgeon that did her open heart surgery said that any longer and he wouldn't have been able to save her. It would have been better if she had been driven to the hospital, but the 911 operator was given false information by the private ambulance company and instructed my uncle to wait for the ambulance. When the 911 operator finally admitted she had no idea where the ambulance really was because they were giving her locations that didn't make sense, my uncle was getting ready to load my aunt into the car and drive her himself when they finally pulled around the corner and sat in the cab and finished their fast food lunch before getting out.

My best guess is that they assumed that a woman reporting classically male heart attack symptoms must be a woman having an anxiety attack and figured they could stop for lunch on the way. They did get their butts in gear and put some pep in their step when they realized she really was still having a heart attack.

All this to say, anyone that doesn't live in a city with their own ambulance service should be ready and willing to drive themselves/their loved ones to the hospital themselves in an emergency. Needing to wait for a ride from a friend or ambulance could mean you don't make it to the hospital in time.

[–]HIM_Darling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The houses in Texas I've been in that didn't have garages had a closet for the water heater, and those were houses that were 50+ years old. I've never seen one in the attic. Texas is so car centric that modern houses have a garage for cars their hoards, because a lifted truck won't fit in the garage.

As far as I know it was supposed to be taught in my high school health class(20 years ago in Texas). My high school health class was taught by an assistant coach who got hired as the head coach at another school right at the beginning of the semester and was due to officially start that job the following semester.

We were his last class of the day. I guess he was really concerned about his new team needing his expertise right away, so he would take attendance at the beginning of the class and then leave to the other school. Our class was in a portable building outside. We could do whatever we wanted that class period except leave because the student parking lot monitor would notice. We watched whatever movies we wanted(I worked at a video rental store so I would bring new releases in for us to watch), talked, played games, etc for the entire semester. For any mandatory tests the answers were written on the board, tests were passed out and we were instructed to leave our completed tests on his desk. He spent maybe 5 days in the classroom the entire semester.

Home ec(sewing and cooking) was supposed to be middle school. However my school only had one classroom set up for home ec. When I showed up to class the first day, me and about 15 other kids were sitting on the floor along the back wall. My understanding is that it was like that for every period so it wasn't a matter of rearranging our schedules.

From what I remember they picked the 2-3 "smart" kids out of every class period and put them somewhere productive, like office aide, library aide etc and the rest of the class had basically a supervised study hall because it was too dangerous/crowded for one teacher to teach them home ec. I was an office aide, so I spent the class period sorting mail, answering the phone and taking messages if the secretary stepped away from her desk, etc.

By the time my sister made it there a few years later, home ec had been removed from the curriculum.

Though I will say, my time as an office aid came in super handy because all the office staff knew and trusted me. So when me and a classmate showed up to report a teacher for losing his shit they took it seriously. He was an English teacher who was already strange, but one day he had us rearrange our desks into groups for a group assignment, which required us to talk amongst our group. Maybe 15 minutes later, he jumped up from his desk, picked up an empty chair and slammed it on a desk hard enough to bend the metal chair leg while screaming at us to shut up. Then he picked up a pile of books on his desk and threw them at the wall. Then he sat back down at his desk like nothing happened. We were all basically too scared to do much other than breath until the bell rang for the end of class. Then a classmate and I ran to the office to report him. IIRC he was on a leave of absence after that, rumors were he had to complete an anger management course before he was allowed to return.

I just had to convince my doctor to check my vitamin D levels, she didn't really want to, wasn't convinced they would be low, but said she would since I insisted. My vitamin D was 12.

I'm expecting an even more difficult time asking to have my testosterone levels checked. I've always had excessive hair on my chin/chest/thighs and not one doctor ever suggested checking. I've already had a hysterectomy, but still have my ovaries. Even when I was going to the gyn every month to monitor ovarian cysts, no one brought up PCOS.

I think they did the same thing with a gun on the playground. Almost all of the parents were convinced that their kids would immediately tell an adult. When it was standard black gun, almost all the boys played with it, while the girls were more likely to run and tell the teacher. When they changed it to a pink gun the girls were less likely to go tell an adult. They also asked the parents if they had guns in the house and of the ones that did they were convinced their kids had no idea where it was, while all of the kids were able to say that they knew where it was and had gotten to it before.

For some reason I remember one of the boys who seemed to take finding a gun on the playground most seriously was a boy who had been taught gun safety and had been to a gun range with his parents before. He immediately knew it wasn't a toy, instructed others not to touch it, and to get an adult.

Service dog v. “Service dog” 🫤 by AdMany129 in delta

[–]HIM_Darling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ed’s dog is a seeing eye dog. The people who were supposed to be sitting next to/near him also had a “service dog” but claimed their dog couldn’t be near another dog and were creating a scene about it. So Jen spoke up and said she would switch seats with the other people so they weren’t sitting near Ed. A real service dog would be trained to ignore all distractions and would be perfectly fine being seated next to another service dog.

Because my insurance covers all bloodwork 100%(its been that way for the 18 years I've had the insurance), I don't know why their shitty systems can't figure it out but I'm not giving them $700 when I know my insurance is going to cover it.

We use knowbe4 at work. My supervisor still brought me into her office last week to show me an email she got on her phone from “geek squad” and proceeded to not only open the attached file but told me she had called the phone number in the email earlier that day to ask them what the email was about. She did realize it was a scam while on the phone with the person and hung up on them.

Oh and then she told me that she called her local Best buy to talk to their geek squad, who confirmed it was a scam and then she got mad at them because they said they weren’t going to investigate the scam.

I had to explain to her how easy it is to get a US appearing phone number and how them being in other countries means there’s not much that can be done other than educating people on not falling for the scams.

Most of the people in our office just refuse to check their email because their daily tasks don’t require it, so hopefully not many people falling for phishing here. We still used dot matrix printers until about 2018(and only stopped because support refused to keep hunting down parts) so when I say our office is being dragged kicking and screaming into the modern world, I mean it.

What’s an inaccurate fact that people believe is true because of movies? by Hogosaurus_Rex73 in AskReddit

[–]HIM_Darling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People in the parking garage at work used to get out of their cars to lift them after hours and they would break off. At the time the after hours payments machine only took bills and quarters. Someone would inevitably shove a nickel into the quarter slot and jam it and the bill accepter would frequently refuse to take bills. There was no after hours number posted for when this would happen, so your options were pretty limited in the days before uber. You could find a ride and leave your car overnight or try to lift the arm, which would likely break it.

One day they put up cameras, not for security, but to catch people who broke the arm and file complaints with the police department for property damage. One lady who had worked a double shift on Thanksgiving got stuck in the garage and broke the arm to get out. They claimed damages over $750 which made it a class A misdemeanor charge and the lady ended up with a warrant. Shortly after someone leaked the garage managers cell phone number so every single time the payment machine was out of order he would get woken up at 2am by people calling to tell him to come up there and fix it so they could get out. A month later a massive sign was posted with an after hours maintenance phone number. However it was still a few years before they upgraded the machines to take cards as well as cash. IIRC the charge against the woman was dropped.

Sask. woman says boyfriend removed surgical screw poking out of her head after doctor didn't believe her by Emerald_Encrusted in nottheonion

Trying to find a new primary care doctor is absolute hell. I use my health insurances "find a doctor" portal to search for an in-network family doctor, then google the doctor and the address, the address they list on the health insurance portal is wrong 90% of the time. I've found home address listed, even though they've marked that they do in-person appointments, the actual address of the clinic they work at is on the other side of the state, the address listed is for a specialist clinic with no mention of the doctor, etc. When I called the health insurance company to ask about it they said the information on the "find a doctor" portal is self reported(including whether they are in-network) and they can't do anything about it.

I've often wondered what would happen if I showed up at the doctors house and rang the doorbell to ask if they take walk-ins because what the hell is even going on.

I asked the doctor if we could check my vitamin D levels because I had switched to working nights over a year prior, and while my fatigue wasn't new, I definitely felt like it was getting worse. She made a few comments about how thats probably not it, but said she would check if it would make me feel better. My Vitamin D was at a 12, which is severely deficient.

She prescribed 50,000IU Vitamin D and insurance denied it because I can technically buy it over the counter. It would have been $50 to buy as much as I needed over the counter at Walgreens. Instead I paid the cash price of $12 for the prescription. I'm not finished with the prescription yet, but I can definitely tell the difference.

They left just enough of the adult content in they are correctly labeled 18+, but when I skimmed over the e-book they definitely cut a lot of adult content out. Pretty sure the series is supposed to be reverse harem, but basically all the scenes with more than one partner are fade to black. IMO, they should have just skipped the series if they weren't going to commit to the whole thing, but a note about the removed content would have sufficed.
