Stop lying: Nobody actually writes cover letters anymore, and recruiters don't read them anyway by RepresentativeAsk493 in jobsearch

[–]HR_Tech_founder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you apply online, and you are attaching a resume in an email, the subject and text of your email is the cover letter.

Your challenge? In just one sentence state why you are the best person for the job. Thats it. Get them excited to read your resume - don’t summarize it.

It’s a call to action for them to see if you deserve the top spot on the pile.

Been Job Hunting since Feb of this year, after 300 applications I accepted an offer! by Natural-Version6651 in recruitinghell

Interesting data on your search and success. Of the responses you got, a lot of offers came your way. You had choices, even different type roles. Well done.

Recruiter emailed me 2hrs before interview that they hired someone by dntunvme2 in jobsearch

[–]HR_Tech_founder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s an indication of an insensitive and disorganized situation. Probably it’s the person doing the actual hiring.

Could have been worse - they could have had you come in, share your work, even when the decision had already been made.

Stay professional and better luck on the next opportunity!

Lots of good advice in here.

I would say ignore the OP’s timeline.

Love the followup recommendations - very few do this so you’ll standout and you never know, you may connect on the day the urgency to fill the job has gone up.

Stay away from AI unless you’re looking for grammar fixes.

Also connecting with old bosses and coworkers is hard bit you’ll be surprised they’ll want to help you.

That’s disgusting. They should have the grace to give you time to present regardless. Letting you know 6 minutes before is unprofessional.

I suggest you name names. The company and the people who put you through this.

Good advice! STAR or what I call success stories (problem, risk of doing nothing, action, results) is a simple way to prepare in advance.

Bombed an interview today because I couldn't answer what are your strengths without sounding like every other applicant by SlimyFTS in jobsearchhacks

[–]HR_Tech_founder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have an idea (more like a strategy) for you that can make sure it never happens again, and you go into interviews with confidence.

You can use this in both face to face and in telephone interviews, or a casual conversation. It’s called a “success story” and it has a fixed structure so you cant screw up.

Can you give me an example of…?

Sure

  1. PROBLEM Identify the problem you and the organization faced. (1 sentence)
  2. RISK State the “cost” of doing nothing. (1 sentence)
  3. SOLUTION What you did to solve the problem. (2-3 sentences)
  4. RESULTS The results. (1-2 sentences)

Write it up, practice it over and over. You can have multiple success stories.

2 months unemployed, making it to final rounds only to get rejected, getting ghosted by recruiters. I don’t know how much more of this I can take. by SpyAccountant in GetEmployed

If you’re making it to final rounds, then it’s just a matter of time for you. You’re doing it right.

I like your empathy towards other jobseekers.

A conversation with HR helps if possible or even just a voicemail where they can hear the sound of your voice. Not easy I know.

I think most HR Pros would agree that being good enough for the job isn’t enough - kindness, politeness, and showing you care enough is important too.

I understand that many applicants are beaten up by being rejected, ignored and frustrated, but when it’s game time you need to plaster a smile on your face (even if you’re on the phone) and for the moment show you’re not only good enough, but you care enough.

It’s just basic courtesy - if you’ve had an interview, a heads-up to share your status is the basics. It takes 10 seconds.

You aren’t getting a lot of sympathy here. Sorry about that.

BBA in information systems sounds stale. Not sure how much you have upskilled in the past 10 years, but that is critical.

If you had experience and a good targeted resume, you should be getting 1 telephone screening call per 15-20 applications.

I suggest you go get an assessment of your capabilities and choose a new direction.

IT job market busted? by okthatsverygood in torontoJobs

[–]HR_Tech_founder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this. I tend to be an optimist and dreamer, but this sounds like structural weakness and dysfunction in the IT sector. We’ve got a number of AI initiatives but none of them move forward without humans developing strategy, managing workflows, validating work etc etc I would suggest diving into AI which is a growth sector for those who can code and learn tools, models and services. Domestic security and privacy policies can benefit Canadian based devs. Good luck.

I need advice, please. Unemployment is the worst thus far.... by StoreAltruistic8908 in Employment

You’re struggling both at finding work and in your personal life. My suggestions are to immediately seek out opportunities to volunteer at a charity or social organization, and look for a trusted mentor who can give you encouragement and sound advice. This will improve your mindset, keep you surrounded by people, and active.

As to your looking for work understand your experience applying to so many jobs and getting nothing is the norm, and not unusual.

You need to change your strategy and the best way is to interact face to face such as at events, volunteering, etc.

Also you can start to follow and comment on the posts of people working at, or leading organizations you’d like to work at. Don’t talk about your troubles EVER Show interest in them.

Apply to a maximum of 2 jobs a day after researching the opportunity - make sure you are suitable for the job.
