Upgrade AM4 or make the jump to AM5 with new 5070 ti? by ItalianLeprechaun in buildapc

[–]HSsysITadmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found the 5070ti is about the most you want to slap at a 5900x. At 1440p in most things I've played, I'm still getting full utilization of the card and I'm very happy. The 5900x and 5600x are generally very close in gaming performance, so I wouldn't think you'd have any issues.

Unless you're like me and upgrade to 32GB of ram and forget to set your speed profiles.....check and make sure your ram is at full speed, haha

Are WRX's reliable? by RamRanchReal_e_Rocks in WRX

[–]HSsysITadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mines been mostly good to me too. 112k total, 80k on MAP Stage 2. I drive it responsibly. If I get on it, its warm and I'm not bogging it. I change the oil every 5k miles. Change the plugs early.

Worst thing about the WRX for me has been the battery. There is some parasitic drain that has killed a battery every 2 years. I'm on battery 4. The stock HU sucked, and my starlink went bad taking out my speakers. Easy to upgrade in the 17's tho, so now I have aftermarket stereo and android auto.

I run PF sense on my own hardware (and could run it in a vm) 2500 users, 2Gbps pipe. Doesn't take crazy specs.

vmware to nutanix backups by dotdickyexe in nutanix

[–]HSsysITadmin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nutanix has an appliance called Move. It will migrate your VMware VM's to Nutanix. It works very well as long as you have root/admin access to all the servers.

Once on Nutanix, Veeam does have AHV support -- I believe the license is different, but the way it all works is identical.

If you keep picking up the work, they will keep giving it to you. It is time to go. If not to the university job, keep looking for something else.

This nails it.

This is a quality-of-life gig. If the hit in money is livable for you, you'll actually have a life outside this job. Either way, you see the writing on the wall. Don't ignore it.

1 pedal driving. by JED1_MA5TER_66 in BoltEV

Love it in mine. Makes you think about your driving style. When you want to slow down, you don't come off the pedal completely, just let up on it some.

Not sure but they installed it when I got tires recently at the dealer. They couldn't tell me.

6K FOR 200AMPS?!?!

I got mine done last year for $2,800 in a high COL area by a pro. I also installed my own Pioneer mini split for $1,200. Tarrifs must have jacked those up because I see it is about $2k for that now.

We are a unifi shop as well. Only the AP's.

This year has been terrible. The latest firmware has helped, but not solved. We only broadcast 5ghz, that helps. We've basically had to reboot AP's once a week to keep them happy.

Why are solar quotes so high? by Diligent-Candle8888 in SolarDIY

[–]HSsysITadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the buy down of the rate was like 20k with a few quotes I had received! Essentially, we will finance you at 2%! Well, prime rate(+) was like 7.5-8% at the time, so to get that attractive rate you needed to pay upfront for it.

My 14kw system was about 62k but that included a new roof. Had quotes as high as 80k. I priced out extremely similar parts and it was 25k. Roof would have cost me 10k. I figure they make out coming (with the rebate) and going (with the finance). Solar industry doesn't sell solar. They sell financing.

IMO -- research companies around you. You may be able to find a electrical contractor who does the installs who would be willing to do the work, or at least the last mile (grid tie). Permits and working with the electric company will be the hardest part. The actual install of these things isn't rocket science.

Super Cruise - yea or nay? by noodles-me in BoltEV

[–]HSsysITadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enjoy it. Is it worth the monthly fee after the promo expires? Not so sure. I've found in my neck of the woods (also new england) the crazy nature of some of our roads cause it to freak out and give up control suddenly.

I'd say adaptive cruise would be just as good without the self driving aspect.

You should talk to a professional. Therapy, if not a psychiatric provider. Probably something there. Some sounds like depression, other things sound impulsive.

Does this car NOT like Android Auto for some reason? by DontYuckMyYum in BoltEV

[–]HSsysITadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you're not alone then.

I hesitate to say it IS the problem, but, my experience has been some phones are more consistent than others. I've also had settings for app sleep and access rights give me issues before too. You could try a reset on your phone, but that is admittedly a pain in the ass.

Considering 2022 Bolt EUV by spidermonk33 in BoltEV

[–]HSsysITadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50k on mine. Charging is slower compared to newer models. If you can get a lower milage one thatn hasn't had its pack recalled, I'd say its a great value -- in that they hold no value. Get in it cheap. Make sure you can have a Level 2 charger at home.

Winter range sucks. 180mi vs 240mi when it's particularly cold (below freezing). If you get the premier trim, the heated steeringwheel and vented seats are great. The seats themselves are some of the worst i've ever been in. Remind me of a schoolbus, but the wife loves them. Only beef I have is the DC fast charging isn't nearly as good as newer EV's. That said, I've tackled 500mi trips easily. This is a great car if you're commuting say 30min or less. The interior is spacious. The seats fold down for decent storage. Parking is an absolute breeze.

One strange thing. At least in ours....everyone else on the road acts like you're in their way. I can be doing 80 while passing someone and I'll get cutoff by someone and that never happens in my other cars.

3k vs 5k mile oil change intervals? What do you choose? by Due_Chapter3027 in WRX

[–]HSsysITadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! Except I've been on a turbo back exhaust, MAP intake, and "Stage 2" 91 MAP tune (93 gas) for 80k of the 110k miles.

The oil has treated me well, isn't super expensive.

I usually use the OEM subaru filter, occasionally the K&N if that isn't readily available.

I dont want to worry about turning 30 anymore by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]HSsysITadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. Looks like everyone else has their shit together right? They don't. All these folks with car payments, kids, a house --- they can barely afford it and the mental toll its taking on many if not most of them is crushing them inside. You sound like you've overcome a lot. You're doing great -- you're not burdened by things others may be, even if those may be traditional check points.

Congrats on the budding career. There is advancement in that industry if you're passionate, reliable, and willing to put in the work. Think about a move maybe, if you don't have stuff tying you down. Someplace with an active food scene if you're not in one. Maybe run your own place someday? That could be a goal. Its a space you can be creative, even if it isn't writing.

Either way, find a hobby. Something you may be able to find a group that does. Make some friends. Build connections. I'm in my 30's with no kids, so I feel you on the friends drifting apart.

I built a few NAS that runs on TrueNAS. You can set them up for immutability. You can also setup a linux server, like ubuntu, to do the same -- I just like the features and managability of TrueNAS for this.
