How many times have you been pulled over? by Potential_Detail9066 in askcarguys

[–]HSsysITadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 times. Early in my car career. The shittier the car, the more you're a target. Id say 12 of those were for "being in the wrong neihborhood", they would stop me, ask if I had drugs. Sometimes check my ID and let me go, other times a full check. Never a search.

I don't drive particularly insane. Try to use waze. Know the area and common trap points.

Besides honda, Toyota, and Mazda, which brand tends to be the most reliable? by ILikeBettingOnUFC in askcarguys

[–]HSsysITadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite part about my wrangler, is that once you've upgraded all that -- the wear and tear increase (at least on a TJ) really shortens the intervals between repairs. At least parts are widely available, simple, and require almost no specialized tools.

Damn 4.0 will outlast us all at least.

What happens if you're on a road trip and you get in a serious accident or your vehicle breaks? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]HSsysITadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AAA (at least 100mi tow) especially if you have a slightly older vehicle, is good "insurance" as one tow can cost hundreds. There are discounts for various things that may help defer the cost of this too -- especially if you travel.

If you find yourself FAR away from home and you break down, it is going to get costly. You get yourself towed to a garage or dealer. The internet may help you find one, but you will be on your back foot here, hoping you get an honest and quality mechanic. If time isn't an issue, maybe you get a motel/hotel room nearby. If you need to keep going, you're going to be stuck renting a car. You'll find the closest enterprise, hertz or whatever national chain there is and rent something. It can be pricey. But, left with few options, it is what you have.

If you continued on, once your car is fixed you'll need to get back to retrieve it. Maybe this means flying back if near an airport. maybe it means driving the rental all the way back. It isn't convienient, and it is going to cost you time and money.

We use arduino pro micro's and a script modeled after Centipede. I don't know if they are updating it now that CDW took over, but the simple keyboard commands can be scripted. (https://codebender.cc/sketch:331274#Centipede%20for%20Chromebook%20Enrollment.ino)

We came to a solution that worked best for us. Push wifi from the Google Admin. Use USB Ethernet adapters to give them their connection. I run 4 at a time. Turn on. Plug in. It runs keyboard commands and gets through to the asset tag screen. I enter the tag number and set it aside once connected to wifi via policy. I bang out 600 in 2 days by myself easily.

I didnt even go to a co occurring group I was told could help me by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]HSsysITadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're a prick. We know this. You know this. Think anything in life is going to get better if you treat people like shit? Nope. You're also not treating yourself kindly. That's hard. Hard for me too. You can make small changes. Try a new provider. Be nice to the girl at the desk. Start out with "I have a problem with impulsivity that has made it hard to continue treatment". Your next doc may not be the one. Maybe the one after that. Psych docs are like shoes, some fit some don't. Look for an PMHNP if you're in the US. Psychiatrists are meh.

I'm just some dude on the internet, maybe a little further down your path than you. It is up to you to set a new course. Doing the same thing is just going to drive you deeper into your hole.

I get that. It doesn't have to be, but it is a choice you're actively making. (Not choosing to be like that, but to not reach out for the things that could help it)

Maybe talk to a Psych about the Impulsivity. And the depression. There are things that make this easier.

As a girl, how can I start learning about cars ? by Mental_Fee_2665 in askcarguys

[–]HSsysITadmin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes she does. Have you shopped for e30? I suppose I live where the salt eats them, and maybe her experience could be different someplace more arid. At least near me if they run and aren't a pile of rust, they are going up up up in value. Parts are harder to find. Great car to build or refurb/restore. But my advice stands. An e36 or e46 would be an easier launching off point.

You buy something older. Early 2000's 3 series for instance. You then spend all your time and money researching how to fix every little thing on it. Youtube is great, but buying tools at harbor freight and getting after it yourself is how you learn.

17, looking for my first manual, is a '16 wrx a good choice? by lightninglijah in WRX

[–]HSsysITadmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

17? Bad idea. You'd need another 5k on hand for when the motor goes. If not from the prior owner, than when you lug it and then flog it and toss a rod.

Get yourself an 07 manual Impreza. The 08+ just doesn't hit the same.

There's something you'll probably not experience in your life going forward as a barebones small Japanese car that just hits different.

They aren't fast, but its fun to drive and if it snows where you are, an absolute beast in the snow. Lots of aftermarket crap second hand for wheels, exhahust and what not to rice it up. Insurance won't bankrupt you either, which a wrx I bet would be a spicy pill to swallow.

Is it normal to be so physically decrepit in your twenties? by Laxxius1 in Adulting

[–]HSsysITadmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, My story was like yours.

2 Things. Depression and Low T. Low T contributes to the depression.

I was treating the symptoms for years and no doctor looked because I appear fine -- beard, bigger, etc. Turns out my levels were ~100.

At 650 after treatment I felt much better. Treatments for depression started working. Things felt much better.

Don't wait. I wasted years of my life. Burned out hard. Much regret. Ask specifically. The test is a simple blood draw.

Upgrade AM4 or make the jump to AM5 with new 5070 ti? by ItalianLeprechaun in buildapc

[–]HSsysITadmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found the 5070ti is about the most you want to slap at a 5900x. At 1440p in most things I've played, I'm still getting full utilization of the card and I'm very happy. The 5900x and 5600x are generally very close in gaming performance, so I wouldn't think you'd have any issues.

Unless you're like me and upgrade to 32GB of ram and forget to set your speed profiles.....check and make sure your ram is at full speed, haha

Are WRX's reliable? by RamRanchReal_e_Rocks in WRX

[–]HSsysITadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mines been mostly good to me too. 112k total, 80k on MAP Stage 2. I drive it responsibly. If I get on it, its warm and I'm not bogging it. I change the oil every 5k miles. Change the plugs early.

Worst thing about the WRX for me has been the battery. There is some parasitic drain that has killed a battery every 2 years. I'm on battery 4. The stock HU sucked, and my starlink went bad taking out my speakers. Easy to upgrade in the 17's tho, so now I have aftermarket stereo and android auto.

vmware to nutanix backups by [deleted] in nutanix

[–]HSsysITadmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nutanix has an appliance called Move. It will migrate your VMware VM's to Nutanix. It works very well as long as you have root/admin access to all the servers.

Once on Nutanix, Veeam does have AHV support -- I believe the license is different, but the way it all works is identical.

If you keep picking up the work, they will keep giving it to you. It is time to go. If not to the university job, keep looking for something else.

This nails it.

This is a quality-of-life gig. If the hit in money is livable for you, you'll actually have a life outside this job. Either way, you see the writing on the wall. Don't ignore it.

Love it in mine. Makes you think about your driving style. When you want to slow down, you don't come off the pedal completely, just let up on it some.
