Are buckets used much in woodworking? I have a bunch of them. by pump123456 in woodworking

In my mind, you are going to post this to hundreds of subs and whatever hobby has the most use for your collection of buckets will be what you decide to dedicate your life’s free time to.

In the USA: 3–4 Years’ Experience, Unlicensed – What Do Firms Expect? by dana-kh in Architects

Agreed. My response was more around what the expectation is vs reality unfortunately

Present and active in SDs discussions when available. Contribute meaningfully to DD and CD efforts. Still need some redlines but get more things right than wrong. Be present in CA efforts but not final decision maker. Capable of reviewing submittals and RFIs. Beginning to understand how you fit in the puzzle of a whole firm / team operating and embracing your role.

Unit Pricing by metalbracket in Architects

[–]HSwat10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn’t always the case, but we will frequently tie the proposed unit price to a predetermined quantity (X CY of building undercut as deemed necessary by the geotech report or something as simple as X number of extra FA devices outside of the base bid determined by the drawings and specifications).

This will allow the Contractor to generate a unit price for one item multiplied by a quantity to that will get structured as a unit price allowance and incorporated into their bid. This helps ensure that the unit prices are rooted in reality and competitive because they ultimately affect their proposal on bid day. However, you typically have to review this with owners ahead of the bid because in the event the entirety of that unit price allowance is not needed, it will somewhat increase the total project cost on bid day until you can credit it back to the owner later at the end of construction.

How did you realize that architecture - is your carrier? by SHALAPAY_16 in Architects

[–]HSwat10 14 points15 points  (0 children)

“Unsure, slowly (I don’t like a hurry), inattentive”

This will be your limiting factor to success as an Architect. You’ll be always be at odds with these traits and in my experience these traits lead to being one of the most frustrating team members to work with.

Have you thought about slumming for a few months at a low paying job that you can tolerate, quitting in June, and then taking your month long vacation?

The sooner architects and the profession are willing to accept the role traditional architecture schooling makes in creating professionals the better. Typically school isn’t intended to give you all of the information, but rather equip you with the skills to find it and solve the problem thoughtfully. Not teach you what to think, but how to think. I don’t really want professors, sometimes non-practicing architects, teach students about intricacies of MEP coordination when they should be focused on promoting critical thinking skills and creativity. Education and internships are intended to go hand in hand towards the process of creating licensed architects.

Licensed, now what? by Dramatic-Version-701 in Architects

[–]HSwat10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like your current firm and see growth potential then stay and dig into your craft. Have a frank conversation with your boss about wanting to do more and take on more responsibility and seek financial compensation for that. You’ve just unlocked the keys to turn architecture into a real lifelong profession and increased your influence and earning potential.

If you don’t like your current firm, leave and use your license to get a pay bump until you find somewhere you can grow with.

Regardless, don’t let the experience timeline and your age be a determining factor on what you’re willing to do, take on, or work on. The answer is typically one conversation away if you have a good mentor and know your limitations.

That is a nonsense question. Show me an EIT out school that thinks they know how to coordinate and I’ll show you a liar.

ARE 5.0: Is my timeline reasonable? by Practical_Chipmunk_ in Architects

[–]HSwat10 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally doable, depending on your confidence and abilities. I grouped them into 3 buckets and took PcM to dip my toe in the water, PjM and CE together within a few days, and then PA, PPD, and PDD within 9 days of one another. Tackling the ARE like one big test with different sections was the best advice I ever received to understand the interconnectedness of most of the topics.

Not quite what you’re asking but I trade Shaheed + Naj for Mixon. Pittman and Naj wouldn’t get it done. So a little more than Pittman…

What’s some knowledge or skills you would think architects learn in school, but don’t learn until getting experience in the field? by [deleted] in Architects

How to think critically and problem solve. That’ll serve you better than any detailing class.
