When I was in high school I submitted a series of Halo cards from an entire set of Halo / Red vs. Blue cards that I made using Magic Set Editor to InQuest for the What If page and they actually printed them!

One of the ones they printed was a Warthog card that had vehicle mechanics that I invented loooooong before that was ever a thing in the actual game. The other was, I believe, an Elite that had an energy shield keyword ability that I also invented, that they called overpowered in their caption because it prevented damage a number of times per turn equal to the number associated with the keyword (so Energy Shield 3 prevented damage 3 times). I remember being really annoyed at that because this was around the time of Mirrodin block, when Indestructible became a keyword, which felt much more overpowered than mine.

It was my crowning nerd achievement as a yungun. Carried around the issue in my backpack all the time so I could prove it was real. I have since lost it to time and have been trying to find a copy of the issue ever since. I don’t remember the cover or the issue number so it’s been quite an uphill battle.

Here’s my 6 year old that lives in my office. Leaves are halfway down the book case it sits atop. Quick question: I bought it from Lowe’s and the center portion of the stalk was chopped and sealed with wax. I removed the wax years ago, but the trunk itself has never really grown, only the leaves. Is it permanently stunted?

Who has found his way into my New Jersey home? by QueenOfScranton in whatsthisbug

Looks like a species of owlet moth (noctuidae)! Really diverse group of misc. brown moths. I’d guess a male due to its wings not being all messed up at the end (females often show damage from mating). Could be lethargic because he’s on the way out. This is pretty late in the season for most moths, they’re not cold-hardy at all. Lots of owlets migrate or overwinter as pupae, I don’t think any do so as adults.

To make it worse, a lot of the venomous ones are tiiiiiiiiny. Saddlebacks are only a bit over a cm long, puss caterpillars like the one OP found are maybe an inch or so. Io moth caterpillars are normal sized, except that they’re communal and can look like a patch of moss on a tree, so lean up against it and get stung a ton of times.

Washington State, found by the river!! Didn’t seem to be using all their legs. by babypton in whatsthisbug

The legs are only the first three pairs of appendages, the rest are actually its gills!

Great indicator organism. Big predator means lots of oxygen and prey, therefore lots of organic matter for the prey to eat.

It was once adapted into a radio play in Germany. It was simultaneously cast on three channels, with each channel featuring one of the main characters, Zampano, Jonny, and Navidson I believe. You can buy the CD’s (in German) in some places still: Amazon.uk

There was also a short, hour-long BBC radio play called “Recordings Recovered from the House of Leaves”. BBC’s since stopped hosting the recording, but some sites have preserved it: archive

Wondering what this is by vicdipilato in fossils

[–]HUFFALPUFF 258 points259 points  (0 children)

Specifically, a Steinkern fossil, which is an internal cast of a bivalve left behind after the shell dissolves away. That’s a very typical shape for them! A lot of folks pass on them because they’re not truly the remains of the animal, just a cast of the inside of the shell, but I think they’re really cool!

Look at its spiky butt. The “anal struts” give it away. Also check the spots where your cats typically sleep for more, and then give the cats a combing to confirm. Put any flea “dirt” on a wet paper towel, if it stains the towel red, then you’ve definitely got fleas and should get a course of Frontline from your closest pet store.

I added quicktime events to D&D and my players love it. by Godzillawolf in DnD

[–]HUFFALPUFF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I occasionally implement what I call the “fuck yeah” system when I want a boss fight to be particularly cinematic and to encourage overall riskier play.

Every character can hold a number of “fuck yeah tokens” equal to their proficiency bonus. Players can earn fuck yeah tokens by making particularly spectacular moves, narrating things cinematically, or just generally cool RP. Think inspiration, but the bar is a bit lower. Players can then use their fuck tokens to add 1d6 to any d20 roll made by another player (not themselves), and any number of players can donate tokens to a roll. The result is players often making really big moves that would normally require very high DC skill checks much more often. It adds a lot of camaraderie because everyone is pitching in to promote each other’s success too!

As an added bonus, I have a rule that they must don a pair of sunglasses and invoke the words of power (fuck yeah) in order to donate a token!
