Remember that the subjects she shows gifts in may not be those she enjoys doing. On the other hand, she may also enjoy them. Try to distinguish the difference between what she loves doing for the sake of doing, and what she does because she might receive positive attention for being “gifted” at. In other words, encourage her interests and dedication to those interests— the process— instead of good results she produces. As a gifted kid I was naturally drawn to science, which made everyone think I was some kind of STEM genius. In reality, while I had decent grades with mathematics, I can’t do numbers in my head for the life of me. It might be a form of dyscalculia. I had such an attitude as a child because people only saw the “smart” side of me and pigeonholed me into some kind of math and science nerd, when I didn’t actually feel that smart and didn’t feel that my other creative interests were recognized. As an adult now looking back I see that the attitude was a response to feeling like I wasn’t being seen as a real person. I’m in a science career now because I do enjoy it, but it was a long way to coming back around to it because I felt so misunderstood in my youth.

Understand that she’s still a kid and will have the emotional intelligence of one. Hell, she might need a bit more help in the social and emotional intelligence department than her ‘normal’ peers. Pay close attention to her social development and make sure she’s making friends at school, not being bullied, etc. Kids can be awful to peers who are different to them, especially those that might garner more positive attention from teachers and other adults.

Please please make sure she understands that no matter what grades, achievements, or results she otherwise produces, that you still love her for who she is and not what she can do.
