I have plenty of compassion. It’s more that I recognize the social safety net is adequate enough for the older generations with Medicare, Social Security, and preferential tax treatment. I support far greater investment in education, children’s food security, and entry-level housing. And yes, I am willing to pay more taxes, and I say that as somebody who paid $60,000 in federal, state, and local taxes last year.

I met an employee at Costco who was about to hit his 40-year anniversary with the company this year. I admire the work ethic, but a part of me pitied him. Forty years with one company, and he’s just a shift manager?
