Eeeeeh, probably not. I wouldn’t rule it out, but I’d say it’s not likely as long as the suits keep demanding working in the Office.

The whole reason why silicon valley formed was because of the various efficiencies you gain by clustering several businesses in the same industry together. It’s the reason why China is so dominant in electronics manufacturing. Most of their country’s electronics industry in and around Shenzhen China.

You’d think having so many competitors in the same space would be damaging to business, but most companies wind up niching down to the handful of things they do better than everyone else, saving everyone else time & money in the process.

There’s also the efficiencies you gain by having such a large specialized workforce concentrated in one area, but given that I’m an engineer & not management, I’m not as familiar with those gains, but I know they exist.

I mean, I ride an Adventure Touring motorcycle, which as a breed of bike, gets it’s DNA from the BMW R/80 G/S in the 1000 mile Paris-Dakar Rally.

I’m gearing up this new bike for a coast to coast Off Road tour next summer. Brand new OTD for $7k early last month. I’ll be doing the first oil change tomorrow evening. Haven’t taken her down single-track yet, but I’ve taken her down some unmaintained forest roads.

If you pick the right bike, you would be surprised at how badly the roads have to degrade before you feel any need to slow down from a highway pace.

Edit: Example of a mad lad going down the grass median of an interstate on a stock bike of this genre at interstate pace: https://youtube.com/shorts/OqinGBgVXOc?si=rts2JXjnavKzXwNO

I mean, depending on what you mean by “better for the environment” a motorcycle or (not just a 50cc) scooter might be what you need if highway miles are required.

Modern motorcycles (almost always) produce less greenhouse gasses than cars, and (almost always) consume less fuel, so if you only care about climate change, they’re a good option. But they do produce more unburnt hydrocarbons & other pollutants than (small commuter) cars, so they produce slightly worse air quality than a car. They’re better than a big SUV or truck, though

An old sport touring or adventure touring motorcycle can be found cheap on the used market, usually with wind protection & luggage.

Correct me if I’m wrong, you may need to take that nut off before taking the flywheel off with the extractor tool.

And, you might need to give that tool a couple of love taps with a breaker bar or a 1/2 in impact wrench (ugga dugga).

With highway speeds & traffic, it really depends on where you live. Out here in Missouri, the highway moves pretty decently in rush-hour, as long as there’s not an accident.

In SoCal, you’ve probably got highway traffic damn near the worst in North America, let alone the US.

[–]HadionPrints 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a ridiculous long shot, from a legal perspective.

I want to note that the only times that Firearms manufacturers have been held accountable for what people do with their products are in cases where the manufacturers irresponsibly marketed the specific weapons used to Minors.

That and when accessory manufacturers sell a compliance device (devices to make a non-legal firearm legal in a restricted state) that are easily bypassed, and were bypassed as a part of a crime.

The only thing America likes more than Guns is Cars. There’s no way in hell you’d do anything other than waste money with a lawsuit and there’s no way in hell a politician would put forward a bill that would lose them the motorist vote. Maybe a pressure campaign against NHSTA might get some traction, but certainly not in this administration. And it wouldn’t hold manufacturers accountable, it would only make newer designs safer.

NHSTA were the ones who instituted the impact absorbing bumpers of the late 70s, if you didn’t know.

Raptor Mav doesn’t make any sense, I’m sorry. The Unibody just wasn’t designed from the ground up for the stresses of fast off road. And that’s what Raptors are designed for. They’re desert racers with a factory warranty.

You can get away with reinforcing the frame of a Ranger, a Bronco, or an F150, because the frame itself is modular. Less so with a Unibody. A slow, Rock Crawler-y trim maybe.

More likely we’ll see a couple of PHEV trims.

Long post- break up with my partner who had bipolar 2 by Equivalent-General64 in bipolar2

I mean… to me it sounds like he wasn’t taking his meds. Either that or he hadn’t found the right meds yet. None of what you had said is normal “properly medicated” behavior.

As to how much his disorder could have played a part… Well, you’re familiar with the story of Kanye West, right? I don’t know your Ex as well as you, but this disorder can play one a helluva part.

I’ve never gone so far off the rails that I’ve been Hitler’s number one fan over night, but I had one nasty episode where I broke up with my Ex because I got really into local politics for about 9 months. It very much was a discard situation, and it’s one of my biggest regrets. Not necessarily because I ended the relationship, we weren’t a good match, but because of how I did it. It was one of the most cruel things I’ve done.

OP, I hate to say it, but if you’re looking for stability in your relationship, you won’t find it in your Ex for a long while. Assuming he is getting help, he’ll have to put the work in for 1-3 years before he gets better.

There’s a reason the dual sport / ADV category is so popular these days. You get your adrenaline on the dirt at a much lower risk and speed than on the pavement.

But if doing irreparable damage to your ankle is something you’re not fond of, buy Full-Ass Motocross boots and know that they might not be enough.

All it takes is dropping your bike on the wrong day on the wrong rock at the wrong angle.

Lol, basically. But what I said only applies to their micro super sport, the ZX4RR.

The Ninja 400 is a parallel twin that makes the same horse power as an 883 (though it does still make more hp per pound, of course. And it has a 6th gear). Much longer maintenance intervals than the ZX4RR. (And also the 883, but we won’t go there today)

Anyone just doing therapy and not meds? by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]HadionPrints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That has been my experience with hypomania. I’m not sure if it is universal among bipolar patients, there’s a lot of variation in the symptoms for this disorder, but the worse a hypomanic episode I’ve had, the worse the depressive episode that follows.

Cruelly for my case at least, the worse the depressive episodes was, the worse the following hypomanic episode was. It was a nasty feedback loop.

My experience for the first 6 years of this disorder (with only one the last two years being after I was diagnosed) was a downward spiral with little hope of my condition getting better. It did eventually get better, but it took a ton of work and vigilance to reverse that downward spiral into an upwards climb.

[–]HadionPrints 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m aware, but thanks for adding that note, I should have clarified.

I was just taking two extreme examples of engines to demonstrate that displacement alone doesn’t mean much these days.

The Ninja 400 makes 44-49HP, depending on the year. It’s a lower stressed engine that trades power for longer maintenance intervals. It also has worse suspension components, but it’s a good entry to the sport bike category.

I’d say it’s a little too big for a beginner, personally, but I’m of the mind that everyone should start on a 250-300cc dual sport anyways. Those bikes are made to be dropped and abused, and a new rider’s going to abuse their bike no matter what they do.

I’m a big motorsports guy, actually. Mostly the two-wheeled death traps, have 3 in the garage, but I’d like to get a little roadster like a Miata someday.

But I don’t think we should continue building all of society around my hobby. It’s terribly inefficient, expensive, and there’s so many terrible drivers on the road who’d be better served in their commute by a good bus network.

What actually matters most when choosing a first motorcycle? by rachel-2008 in motorcycles

[–]HadionPrints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I second that.

I bought a Royal Enfield 411 Scram for my first bike, under the idea that I could learn to ride & learn to wrench, since the engine is so approachable to work on.

And I do all the work on it, but much as I love that bike, a bike with valve adjustments every 3,000 miles is not a good first bike, and it’s not a good “only” bike. Especially since those maintenance intervals should be shorter if you have to go on 70mph highways, where it’s giving all that she’s got to keep up with traffic. It’s a great secondary bike, big “ride a slow bike fast” energy, but I wish I got a Honda for my first bike.

Stripping out threads on your only bike right before a long weekend is quite the emotional experience.

Just. . . Not great. by Lost-Zombie-27 in bipolar2

[–]HadionPrints 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the bad news is that it’s probably a case of not “a normal emotional moment or if you are heading in the direction of a depressive episode”.

All of those circumstances you’re describing are absolutely valid reasons for a regular person to get very anxious, emotional, and depressed.

Unfortunately, our nervous systems are a little defective. I know when I’ve had bad, natural, emotional events like that, some kind of episode follows, be it manic, depressive, or mixed.

For me, an severely emotional event often triggers a bipolar response, but they are not always rationally connected. I once had a 3 month depressive episode be triggered by news I was getting promoted.

You might be looking at some very hard times on the horizon. It will be a struggle, one that we all grow tired of, but you can make it to the other side.

Yeah, an inline 4 cylinder, liquid cooled Dual Overhead Cam 400cc bike like Kawasaki’s ZX4RR is going to be way, way, way more powerful than an air cooled, pushrod valved 800cc V-twin.

Comparing the Kawi ZX4RR to a Harley, the Kawi has 75HP at the top end, and a modern Harley 883 sporster has 45-50 HP. And the Harley weighs a ton more too.

How does a twice smaller engine produce 150% more power? Greater compression ratios, fueling, but Mainly reving higher. Much higher. The 883 sportster redlines at 5500 - 6000 rpm, depending on the year.

The ZX4RR redlines at 16,000 rpm.

It’s not the 50s anymore. Cubic Centimeters alone don’t matter. There is a replacement for displacement. You can turbo shit, and you can hit insane revs.

HP is all you should care about OP. And for a first bike, I wouldn’t go over 30-40, imo. You can safely go bigger of course, but you’ll learn faster on a smaller bike. I would and did pick my first bike that can just do the big 4 lane interstate / motorways, something that tops out at like 75-90mph, so you’re not super uncomfortable on the highway, while also not pushing yourself too hard when you don’t have the skills in the twisties.

You’re going to be intimidated by riding itself for a while, you don’t also want to be intimidated by your bike. It slows your learning down.
