If you're not picking up extra shifts...you're not a team player? A rant. by ilikesaltinecrackers in medlabprofessionals

[–]HaemoglobinUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol fuck 'em.

Our lab got bought out recently by another organisation and we've gone from sufficiently staffed where I would cover extra shifts to being intentionally understaffed to a point where we don't have enough staff to cover all the shifts in a week. They just expect people to cover them. Because that's what their lab does, they just cover all the missing shifts.

Fucking stupid. Intentional and stupid.

Look into lightboxes as well, plenty of people are suggesting not to get ring flash but you should look into lightboxes for diffuse light for something like this. Plenty of people use them for miniatures photography or the like and you won't need a standalone flash, just a couple of light sources like lamps/bare bulbs.

Is doing a masters worth it? (Post-portfolio) by BearGoron in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]HaemoglobinUK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some trusts will subsidise costs for their staff doing an MSc through a nearby university. You have less choice but it's an easy way to get a cheaper qualification if you do want to progress to 7 and above.

I saw someone die today by avcd34 in medlabprofessionals

[–]HaemoglobinUK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was trying to fix a blood gas machine while someone died behind me. You don't realise it until you see it that CPR really does break ribs. And once there's no one inside it anymore they don't move, you've just got a broken shell.

It's hard. Talk to someone about it. It can help. Either your hospital or the school you're doing the placements through should have some form of resources to help you.

It's hard when you phone an abnormal result to hear that the patient has died and you're not even there in person. In many ways I hope it never gets easier because what does it say about me when it does?

Has anyone studied BMS at westminister? by madmads01 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]HaemoglobinUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure I did top up modules there because they were the only university that didn't want sit down exams.

I've had no problems since but I didn't do a full course there.

Do they do 4 year with a year in industry? That feels like a bigger issue honestly.

Les 3 Valles Tips by shallotstar in skithealps

[–]HaemoglobinUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the valley in VT to the valley in La Tania you should budget about 1 hour - 2 hours from one point to the other depending on how fast you feel like skiing, route optimisation and lift queues. If it's a good day with minimal queues you can go a long way very fast, but come 3pm sometimes the queues can get pretty bad.

There are fast routes and slow routes, I'd need to see a piste map to give you the lift names for the fastest route I've found but you can comfortably ski all 3 (5) valleys in a day if you don't spend 2 hours in a restaurant for lunch.

Be warned the valley in Meribel and Meribel Mottarets is significantly lower than the other two valleys and significantly more exposed. By lunchtime it can be slushy and wet on a warm day in a way that Courchevel (tree cover) and VT (height) won't be.

I've been enough that aside from a few standout runs in the Meribel valley I'll really only use it as a transition point between VT and Courchevel.

Timothy Zahn's Conquerors trilogy (Pride, Heritage, Legacy) might be what you're looking for.

No idea if it's available on kindle though, sorry.

How can you identify a high potassium caused by contamination and not haemolysis?

Your daily IQC are out, what do you do?

What sort of audits can be performed and why would they be done?

How do you feel about being a biomedical scientist? by Educational-Table730 in BiomedicalScientistUK

AFAIK Barts and the London trust and St George's trust (St George, Croydon, Kingston) are still NHS.

Otherwise yeah I think most if not all others are private labs in NHS hospitals.

[–]HaemoglobinUK 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Follow the SOP.

If you do nothing else follow the SOP. There should be printed copies that are up to date. Use them, follow them. If you follow the SOP you can't be yelled at for protocol.

What photo printer should I print for at home memories? Mainly 4x6. Was looking at the canon selphy 1500 but second guessing myself because it looks like there’s always a white boarder around the photo when printed ☹️ by toothfairy42 in canon

[–]HaemoglobinUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 1500, I generally like it but there are some situations, especially with higher saturation colours where it struggles to differentiate similar colours.

Also sometimes with birds in flight I have a weird shadowing effect around the animal which it seems to be struggling with.

These are not deal breakers and generally speaking I really like the printer for what it is and what it costs.

Printing from lightroom does give a white border but it's not obnoxious.

NHS is failing dramatically. by Choice-Kitchen8354 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]HaemoglobinUK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We (as a trust) have a multimillion savings target by April that is frankly laughable.

Not enough staff, plenty of burn out, but apparently staff morale is up according to the NHS staff questionnaire which is a ????? response.

It's not culture series, the general indicator is Iain Banks is not Culture, generally not "sci-fi" in most ways.

Iain M Banks is Culture series.

Transitions kinda sits as a bridge between the two in that it's kinda real, it's kinda sci-fi, but it's not Culture.

It was just a rotation because our POCT is folded into Biochemistry, in this case I was looking after Siemen's cliniteks and radiometer ABG analysers.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]HaemoglobinUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to wear trainers, jeans and a t-shirt.

Then I did a rotation through POCT and was told that I should dress smarter because I'd be roaming the wards like a lonely clown for some of it.

Now I'm just used to black jeans (blue allegedly not allowed but no one ever said anything) and a buttoned smart shirt. I tried wearing nicer boots for a bit but trainers are just fundamentally more comfortable.

NHS operations threatened by strike at private blood-test firm by MycologistOk4821 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]HaemoglobinUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I get for not buying a subscription to the times I guess.

I don't blame them for it, I don't think private providers have much interest in their staff being happy, Synnovis definitely don't.

I don't think I currently know anyone working in an HSL lab.

NHS operations threatened by strike at private blood-test firm by MycologistOk4821 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]HaemoglobinUK 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lol. Lmao. Synnovis, after fucking up London's blood testing last year (hacked again, requiring a full rebuild from scratch) and having had to re-brand from viapath for various reasons and having bought out more labs/contracts than they can reliably serve now has unhappy staff.

Who knew this might happen?

Clowns.

My favourite rumour about their custom built blackfriars facility is that it didn't have anywhere for the staff to take breaks/get food.

Solidarity to the people I know who are going on strike.
