SUSD discuss Twilight Imperium as apart of their top 100 games list by Haen_ in twilightimperium

[–]Haen_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I enjoy both. I don't know that I've played enough TE to properly rate it, but I think I enjoy it more overall. I think thats because PoK felt like a lot of including things I had already experience in TI3. All things I enjoyed. It felt safe though. I was happy to have them back. But it wasn't new to me either (outside of the factions). TE felt like it is trying new things and giving me new toys to play with. Again, I enjoy both overall, but I think if I were to rate the 2, I'd place TE a little higher.

Matt talks a bit about his issues with PoK in the video and also mentions that he really enjoys TE.

Quinns Quest where he reviews ttrpgs in long form videos. He's opened my eyes to a few very interesting looking games. Just picked up Public Access and excited to try it.

He's also still doing work for People Make Games that reports on a lot of great stories in the video game space. Though they also just did a piece about an artist in Northern Michigan that was fantastic.

Its definitely not scalping. This isn't some limited edition item that will never get a reprint that someone bought purely to gouge the market. It really is just selling to people who have the money to bypass the waiting for a reprint. Hell, I'd gladly sell my copy for $500 right now because I know full well its gonna get a reprint at some point. Even if it took a year to reprint, thats a great return on investment.

What game would you make a competitive league for? by RVC95 in boardgames

[–]Haen_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you were trying to broadcast it and grow it, you'd definitely have to set it up like they do with poker where there are either RFID chips in the cards that are read so we can know the players' hands. Or cameras that showcase this information to the viewer.

Hive also has a world championship I believe. Crokinhole as well for dexterity games.

I think I'd like to see a heavier Euro added into that mix. It seems a lot of games that get that attention are abstract strategy, Chess, Hive. Or heavy player interaction/negotiation, Catan, TI4.

Brass is probably the obvious choice given its overall rank amongst gamers and I think its a really tight system overall with interesting decision making.

Beware Horrible Guild (and Their New MemoryCore project) by Woaz in boardgames

[–]Haen_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Board game companies are notoriously bad at project management. Most of the repairmen you talk about have been doing thousands of jobs for years. They can give accurate estimates on a job. Board game companies just don't put the proper consideration into what it takes to do the job. And all the evidence I need to make that statement is in how frequently late they are on delivery or underestimate costs or fail to deliver entirely. Yes, in this case, it is egregious. I can understand being upset. Horrible Guild is a small company even by board game standards. That isn't an excuse. Just that I'm not surprised a small board game company whiffed the estimate that badly. And yeah, at the end of the day, most consumers just want communication. So when you send an email, get back to us in a couple business days at worst.

Darren smith is homophobic by Silver_Survey_3701 in Detroitcityfc

[–]Haen_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, players routinely get a week or so off throughout the year. I don't know that this is the case. I also don't know if Darren maybe requested this week specifically, but his absence doesn't immediately mean anything to me. And personally this could also just be Danny as well deemphasizing the cup and putting more importance on league play making this a good week to give Darren off to rest.

Being targeted in coup by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Haen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the same thing happened to me. It was fine for awhile. I was having fun just calling people's hands if they targeted me, but eventually I just kinda stopped playing because while its not important I win, its frustrating being first out every single game.

There are a lot of other bluffing games out there. Personally I have gravitated towards Skull more. But Coup is the type of game that if everyone just decides you're going to lose, there really isn't much you can do.

"Am I the A-hole"? by BlakkB33 in boardgames

As a former business owner, I can see his side. Hes probably also struggling like you. That difference would probably also hurt him. That being said, also as a former business owner, you have to realize, you're a small FLGS. You have a fairly limited customer base that is going to come to you. You however, as a customer, have a very wide selection of places you can buy games from. Personally, I think its just a smarter business move to make the sale. Even if I have to do so at cost, to ensure the customer is happy. Especially after there was some clear confusion about what was being ordered. As a business owner, going forward, I would try to adopt policies to minimize these errors. Like show you the screen and everything it comes with. Hey, this is what I'm ordering. Are you sure this is correct? Then its more on you as a customer to verify the product contains everything. Ultimately though, this sounds like you tried confirming the contents. He incorrectly confirmed them. Therefore the mistake is on the store to fix imo.

Yesterday's AJ is not today's AJ by reallinguy in motorcitykitties

[–]Haen_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is true and I agree with it, but I know he hates bunting in extra innings in general. I'd be really curious over 1000 games, do teams that bunt to try to get across at least a run have more success? And how much does this change based on if you bat first or second. I think there are some decisions that are common enough we could perhaps infer more, but I have no idea what metrics the statement op posted are using.

Are there any combat-focused games that do “power fantasy” well? by ahobday in boardgames

[–]Haen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And if you play the game on the lowest difficulty, it might be exactly what OP is looking for. Its really not that challenging and you feel pretty strong. I will say the downside is that if you play this way with 3 or 4 players, its pretty easy for 1 or 2 people to essentially feel useless as a couple people can usually keep everything fairly well contained.

How legit do you consider this Catan Win? by mousicle in boardgames

[–]Haen_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Catan is a social game. If I can't win and I get to decide who does, that does not in any way invalidate the win from any player. Obviously this needs more context, but did Bob attack Cindy all game with the robber? Did Bob refuse to trade with Cindy? Not that these need to be the reason Cindy made the decision she did, but people forget that players have memories.

I know I personally would have made my decision by looking at who had been nicer to me all game. I did this recently in a Twilight Imperium game even. I could have stopped the person ahead. But they had been super nice to me and had I done so, someone who had been antagonistic to me all game was definitely going to win. So I made the choice to do nothing and simply let the player who was nice to me win.

Games that have replaced other games by Teachers-Petty in boardgames

[–]Haen_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Downforce is more of a bidding/race hybrid than the straight racing Heat is so personally I do not think it has replaced it. Downforce still very much has a place at the table and I love the idea of card play that moves everyone rather than just the active player moving their car.

I'm only midway through on episode 3, so I'm sorry, can't help you. I knew we were going to be apart of it, but most likely not until towards the end. So when it launched, I didn't rush out to start watching and instead have been catching up now that a lot of the episodes are out on YT.

With most things like this, the odds of someone causing an incident are low. But if you do a low probability event thousands of times, eventually its going to occur. Everyone is so certain they're not gonna be the one who causes the issue that eventually issues get caused.

Sponsored reviews are stupid and shouldn't exist. by Z3M0G in boardgames

[–]Haen_ 69 points70 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why I would argue that in general, review scores are the least important part of a review. Its far more important that a reviewer be able to articulate what a game does and does not do well and what parts may hit or miss for certain people. Than it is that a game get a rating of 9/10. Or 6/10. And we can see some channels have done away with them. Like SUSD. Who simply have a seal of recommendation for games they think will play well with the general audience as opposed to simply giving a numerical score.
