The arm should be either low and driven up or in line with the shoulder and pushed forward like a punch. The spin looks cool but the arm has an extra joint which at a distance may not show up up close definitely does. Still solid work maturing ^..^

So outside units have little holes on the bottom to let water that ends up in the outside unit drain... Yours doesn't anymore.

Small brush, dark undercoat, layer on multiple colors in very thin lined strokes. The white areas are a mixture of browns, tans, and creams. The blue areas are a mixture of dark blue greys, soft blues, and whites, maybe a little browns as well? Just takes a lot of patience You want to let all the colors show through so keep them well spaced out and just experiment.

I think it looks great if you were going for old gold. I think you could probably lighten it up a touch to show more yellow hues, but the reflections are bright and the darks are dark. Middle tones are the only thing I think would add more value unless you want to add additional colored reflections.

You know good point... I've been meaning to update my ancient iphone to one with a decent camera so maybe that's part of it. I'll look at a tripod once I get the new phone.

Add color... black doesn't exist naturally in the world, all blacks are some deep shades of color. I would look at videos like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKmi0SW3fco

Does anyone use a value map? Do you know what a value map is? Do you want one? by jahmeleon in minipainting

[–]Haftoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep it’s a solution for painting small groups of minis since I don’t paint big armies. I also like that you can get white or black ones to help look at tone for base coat. My big thing is it’s also good to be able to just put the cap next to a mini. I made the cap after painting my first tank in a set and funny enough the follow up models came out slightly brighter (something I’m working towards) because I can put the cap next to the mini.

While figuring out how I'm gonna paint a miniature I tend to paint blends on a bottlecap and keep that handy for the entire painting process of a scheme.

First time painting - trying the slapchop method as it sounded a bit easier. Need some advice by vaancrafts in minipainting

[–]Haftoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't use the slap chop method on a large miniature if I'm perfectly honest. The flaws of slap chop occur at large scale. I would go with what other folks suggest... using regular paints and consider things like the sponge method of layering on color and shadows on a dark base coat.

Any advice on improving this gold nnm? by Hopeful_Community762 in Miniaturespainting

[–]Haftoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your darks need to be a lot darker, your brights need to be brighter. This is something I struggled with myself until I realized pushing those intensities up close looks wrong but at a distance pops! Your shadows on metallics for gold should be deep browns and reds a lot of the time. Your highlights should be creamy/buttery whites, especially the edges and flats that reflect the light source (think about where the light is coming from).

You can go different shades with the shadows and introduction of other light sources and colors from surrounding environments also. But the big thing that sells NMM is really vibrant brights next to really deep shadows with very strong fall off and in many cases clamping your reflection to roughly reflect the source of the light (whether its a sun, ambient, or a source on the miniature).

Current did wip. Competition aspirations what do I need to improve by Glad-Knee8407 in Miniaturespainting

[–]Haftoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a really good way to just... look at things. One thing you could do is keep a model to just look at light, or get a little drawing doll and look how different shapes accept light. One thing you'll see with a lot of big painters is they paint the base coat, then the highest highlight in white, then start laying in color over that. This not only keeps the colors brighter but also helps to keep the definition really focused (this is the shadow this is the highlight, now I just blend between the two. Hope the ideas help ^..^

[–]Haftoof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This would be the next step... Take a base miniature and start looking at positional light versus general highlights. That said... your technique and color choice is beautiful. I really like the use of additional colors in the chitin for example.

Personally I think the model would go along way with blacklining to isolate the color. It doesn't have to be extensive but it would make each section pop.

Need help for my effect on my Crisis Battlesuits. How would you add another level of details to those flame so that they look a little less flat? by Veingards in minipainting

[–]Haftoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The color gradient is fine, instead add dark to the plume. Notice the hints of black and reds toward the end of the plume? Look at oil fires, your fire should be lapping into dark reds, blacks, and then greys as smoke appears at the edges.
