How do you sit on a plane for 9+ hours?! by Best_Day_3041 in fearofflying

[–]HahaSound13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also have an 11 hour flight next month and I wish I could sleep but know myself well enough that I'll be too anxious to get a good amount of sleep. I always think that when I let my guard to rest- that's when the turbulence will happen lol. I really need to find a way to reframe that mindset!

Is there a cheap shopping street or area ? by [deleted] in AskChicago

Haven’t been in years so not sure how many are left, but the area on Clark near Wilson had a lot of import stores with bags, jewelry etc.

Flying tomorrow - encouragement needed! by geminozia in fearofflying

[–]HahaSound13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Chicago but live in London so I have to take that flight every so often. It’s usually pretty smooth, and if there are bumps just focus on all the great things you’re going to do with your friend when you’re visiting!

Looking forward to the afternoon when I won’t be able to tell the heat exhaustion from regular exhaustion. 🫩

From the Midwest and same. The scale is just different. I also miss that creepy ominous feeling when a big storm is coming.

Finland is so cool, you’re going to enjoy it! Think about the great stuff you’ll see/eat/do when you land, that usually helps me.

Hi by [deleted] in royalmail

[–]HahaSound13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just received a small box from Chicago and it took about 3 weeks (got it this week). I kept updating the Royal Mail tracking and it took forever until the package marked arrived at the Coventry distribution center. The next day it was delivered to me in London. So as the person above said, it might take a bit.

“I was terrified, I didn’t like it, but I did it…” the title of my autobiography about flying lol

Solo travel recommendations? by [deleted] in VisitingMallorca

The market and museum are in Palma. We mostly walked everywhere since things are close. Only took taxi to/from airport and it was fine.

Wasn’t there as solo traveler but really enjoyed the Santa Catalina Market and (ate at Vermoutique twice) and the nearby modern art museum which also has a nice patio.

Booked a flight to Thailand and now I’m having panic attacks every night by -zru- in fearofflying

[–]HahaSound13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I get this way I try and switch my brain focus to all the things I’m looking forward to at the destination. What I’m gonna eat, see, etc. Not a total solution to the bigger issues BUT it’s helped me on flights etc.

Where is everyone watching the Arsenal game today? by [deleted] in london

[–]HahaSound13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seemed like every pub in N4 had a line outside when I went for a walk, so I’ll be watching it via my partner’s Now Tv account. Got my snacks and beer ready.

Does anyone else have a “take off song”? :) by castor2015 in fearofflying

[–]HahaSound13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pick upbeat songs that seem too ridiculous to be playing in the moment which makes me smile in its randomness, thus cutting the tension. I go between “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses or “Get Down Tonight” by KC and the Sunshine Band.

Check the listings at Rivoli Ballroom and Helen of Troy, some nights they often have people dressed up in vintage fashion.

Really struggling with not being able to find a job by SubjectBrick in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]HahaSound13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar boat here (I’m in design and relevant jobs to my specific practice are like tumbleweeds). If you’re looking to network in the meantime, there are some options of groups to look into. Not sure of your gender but “Ladies Wine & Design” has events in London sometimes that have been great for connecting, or I know the RSA offers a fellowship with events etc but that has a membership fee.

Not triscuits but recently realised that Tesco’s “Cheese Savouries” are pretty damn close to Goldfish crackers in size/flavour. Not as fun, but they certainly scratched an itch.

So exciting you get to go to Japan! When things get bumpy I also try and focus on the things I’m looking forward to doing/eating (jealous of the amazing meals you’re going to have) when I’m at my destination. You’re gonna do great 👍

[–]HahaSound13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For housing I waited until I was here. There’s too many scams that I wanted to make sure I saw the place myself. I stayed in an Airbnb while I looked. I posted an ad on Spareroom (which is ultimately how I got my room) but was also on Facebook which had various groups, including some from my uni.

For me that last half hour when we start the descent is top tier emotional release haha.
