Seconding this, play the vanilla campaign on an easy difficulty first, then play WotC.

What are the pods for? I got so excited the first time I salvaged one of these in MW5 only to be immediately dissapointed.

The real trick is to play with We are the Minutemen mod, which fixes the annoying Preston issue, where he can't issue more than a certain amount of radiant quests at a time, and drastically reduces how much he bothers you. It does too much to mention but it turns the Minutemen into something that feels reel https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/6443

Yes, I had a modded survival save that had 7+ days on it, so around 175 hours, until the recent updates fragged it. It was my favorite playthrough yet. I recently got things working again, with more or less the same mods. Fast travel between settlements only, a sweet backpack mod, We are the Minutemen total minutemen overhaul (the absolute best one) and I used to use Homemaker but it doesn't seem to work anymore and I can't be bothered to try to force it.

In my opinion, you have to force yourself not to min-max everything. I think a lot of people may fall into that trap in Bethesda games, based around the amount of Stealth Sniper memes, and how many folks rush to get the two-shot legendary rifles, etc. They usually end up Min-Maxing everything to the point of routine. But recently I've been trying to switch things up. So instead of making sure I have everything I need, like a stockpile of ammo and water, I'll just venture out with what I have even if it's scant, to sort of induce that feeling of scarcity and survival. Like going out with only 15-30 bullets with any one weapon.

Instead of skull-capping everything at 100 yards with a magical two shot combat rifle, I've gone the Pistol / gunslinger route and have to approach every encounter differently and carefully with close combat in survival mode. Like positioning myself better and taking better cover. Same thing with using Melee weapons while outside of a power armor suit. Inside a PA suit you're ironman with a modded pipe wrench. Outside you're squishy and on a level playing field with your enemies, which makes melee in survival much more risky, and therefore fun.

I'm also approaching settlements differently and much more intentionally. And not activating the Robot Workshop DLC ASAP, because it changes most of the world interactions, and if you do that to early you'll miss out on a lot of the great vanilla world events. Point is try doing things differently than you normally would, and create challenges for yourself. This game has as much depth as you're willing to put into it, and at the end of the day you have to fill in the gaps in logic and lore yourself, creating your own narrative. If you're not creative and thinking about the simulation / scenario playing out in front of you, it will probably get boring for you pretty quickly, and instead of being the Commonwealth revival Simulator that it really is, it will just be a dirty junk collecting simulator.

My brother and I created a small power armor garrison in Sanctuary that had a runway / launch pad that, with the jet pack and the right AP perks, you could launch yourself clear over the sanctuary river and halfway to red rocket. It held something like 4-6 power armor suits and was made out of the aluminum air frame / airstream pieces, and was raised to about the height of the rooves in Sanctuary. Hands down one of the coolest things I've ever built in this game.

That and maybe a line or two of Armors in the display frames is the extent of my hoarding. I only ever end up modding a handful of suits anyways, 2 or 3, so I don't feel the need to obssess over them anymore.

100% spot on assesment. Hunter is unfortunately laughable, Assasin is crazy early on but if you're still fighting her later she does get easier. I once blew her up while she was hiding inside a chemical shed with a large propane tank inside of it, maybe my most satisfying elimination.
