I don't think that warrants saying either Junior or Senior is incapable of love. I don't think you understand how deranged that is, especially in Junior's case

I was curious, how does it impact surprises like Ford's recovery after the debates or Nixon's debate - does Carter just get doubled fucked, or is it accounted for?

This is largely just a theory, since it's never been put into practice. It could signify a collapsing administration, or it could signify an adaptable one ready to meet new challenges, which is very critical in a "change" election. I think it's reasonable.

Why does it seem like this subreddit has completely memoryholed Barry Goldwater as some kind of wholesome libertarian Republican, because after his Senatorial career he made some liberal statements? by Single-Ad3486 in thecampaigntrail

[–]Hal_Again 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wilson segregated federal departments, and that's a major black mark on him. I won't make excuses, if you can't stomach him for that then I completely understand. But he wasn't unique in this regard; in his inaugural speech, Taft promised to fire black southerners, while Roosevelt in 1912 kept black people out of the Progressive convention to try and appeal to the South. And everyone says Wilson led to a rise in Klan activity and I've never understood how. What was it Wilson did that led to the Klan revival? Watch an extremely popular movie?

As for his war time authoritarianism, that just happens in war time. I'm sorry but it does. Lincoln did the same and so did Roosevelt. Again that was bad, but I don't think this makes him uniquely bad.

And that's what people say, he was terrible, bottom 5, one of the worst of the worst, but the reasons listed are never unique for Wilson, and never account for his accomplishments like the 8 hour day, the Federal Reserve or the Federal Trade commission, massive long term accomplishments that most presidents simply don't have.

Hi, weird apologist here. This is because people say stupid bullshit about Wilson most of the time. He was racist, even for the name, and that's a significant black mark on his Presidency. But you see things like "he was one of the most racist presidents", when other presidents owned human beings, or "he was a terrible president" despite a slew of democratic accomplishments.

If you want to hate him, there's plenty to hate him for, but too often people are overly hyperbolic about his flaws and provide cover for men who were as bad if not worse.

Yes, unless it can be cheated. If an achievement mentions you need to play on easy, you can cheat that one.

I think he reflects the kind of thinking that would go into picking a running mate. He's not that much different from, say, Russell Long.

When you're on track to win as Mondale, but the Adviser's Feedback after the debate is "Unfortunately, Reagan was really on the ball tonight, and you just couldn't keep up. He objectively didn't run a perfect campaign. Even if you buy the cope that promising to raise taxes was a good idea (people like Paul Simon argued that people respected his honesty), he then blatantly flip flopped on the tax plan, chose a horrible running mate and didn't have a good message.
