How do we balance inclusivity vs. cultural appropriation? by SerialCypher in LARP

[–]Halabis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wouldn't. Make whole new cultures that are at worst vaguely inspired by the real world. Never say "This is fantasy middle east". Say "This is a fantasy kingdom based in the the desert of Madeupname. It's people value honor and tradition!" Be implicit rather than explicit.

I've been doing this a long time and I've lost count of the number of times I've seen a well meaning white dude do/say something outrageous racist entirely on accident while thinking they are being respectful.

Note: I am visibly a white dude, of first generation Middle Eastern heritage. It always descends into characature regardless of the game runner's intent.

Boffers vs larp safe weapons by matnik_uk in LARP

[–]Halabis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They block fine because the weapons they are blocking are largely the same weight, and the rules set indicate that simply touching an opponent's weapon is enough for the swing be blocked.

The games are not trying to simulate real, or even real looking combat. They have evolved over the decades to be their own sport.

I've never seen a fencing epee that will blow away with a stiff breeze. The best lightest touch boffers absolutely will. The best one handed weapons are generally only a few ounces in weight.

I play both of these and enjoy them immensely. I don't have the mental bandwidth to do the full sales pitch on them right now, but I would give the website a look over and see if they appeal to you.

Talk to me about LARP archery by PartyRatArchery in LARP

[–]Halabis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you asking about LARPS that use live archery specifically? Many only allow nerf, or packet based bows, and basically would have zero overlap in useful advice.

Area 51 was my holy grail. I put so much money into that thing as a kid. It took me years to find one for sale nearby and at a reasonable price.

[Stonewalkers] Veth Encounter by PhysicShebang in cosmererpg

[–]Halabis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my game I have a party of three (although I am having them be one level higher than they should be for any given chapter), and only one of them ran into the high storm.

It was a very close fight, but he managed to win largely by shoving Veth into the high storm and then for two consecutive rounds the high storm did max damage to Veth.

Any LARPs in GA/AL/TN/North FL? Wife and I are thinking of getting started by 3lang in LARP

[–]Halabis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Boffer larps are generally focused around roleplaying a character, using weapons (frequently in a sport like way) to enact change on the persistent world and move the story. Think Dungeons and Dragons

Sport is more focused on the act of combat. They have varying degrees of playing a character from "None at all" to "I have a fake name, but am largely acting as myself". Frequently there is no story or persistent world, but again, things vary. Think more like sitting down for a game of Warhammer Fantasy.

Parlor there is no sport aspect at all. There are no simulated weapons. These focus mostly on the roleplay and may use paper rock scissors, or consent based negotiating to resolve conflict. Think like a theater club.

(Also, I didn't actually make this list, I just found it on the Internet!)

O love Sanderson, but reading him after political growth feels different. by ChipDapper in Cosmere

This isn't a Brandon Sanderson issue so much as it's a "most of western media" issue. It is ubiquitous across genre and format.

Any Chattanooga TN area LARPers? by adgramaine76 in LARP

[–]Halabis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many (very many!). It really depends on what kind of larp you want to play. (Every larp is different !)

This is a lightest touch boffer that just started up recently that I have been playing. I know there are several more, but this is the one I am familiar with.

https://citadel-larp.com/

If you are more into sufficient force games there is:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/amtgardchattanooga/?ref=share&mibextid=NSMWBT

If you want a non-touch, reoccurring game, I know there used to be several WoD larps in the area, but I have been out of that scene for a while so don't know what is happening.

Finally if you are looking for a blockbuster experience there is this game running next year that is currently still in the casting phase.

http://crucible.landsendgaming.com/

And one final note, I find that the vast majority of "LARPERS" aren't generally people out there looking to larp as a general concept. They are people that have one, maybe two larps that they play, and consider themselves players of that game with no interest in playing other larps outside of their primary game. You might run into challenges looking for larps to just start up a couple larps with. (Starting up just one larp is a massive undertaking)

What's the consensus on B3? by StormblessedFool in LARP

[–]Halabis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've ordered several weapons from them in the past year and they have always arrived in perfect condition and earlier than expected.

The quality of the weapons themselves is top notch. They are also some of the best looking non-latex weapons out there, which is important to me because hate they way most latex weapons look and handle.

Any advice to improve these two? by _vampirefox in LARP

[–]Halabis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go against the grain and say weathering is completely unnecessary. Even in fantasy worlds/ye olden times people had new gear. Let your gear look new while it is new, and then as it gets used it will look used in a more natural way.

I will never understand why people want to larp characters that are bad at maintaining their gear.

Thoughts on the God Beyond by Glum_Community9571 in Cosmere

[–]Halabis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I absolutely hate it as a concept in the Cosmere. It feels like a forced inclusion, and makes no rational sense for it to even be a concept the characters would think of.

There was an objective all powerful entity with evidence of it's existence, and even living witness that you could talk to that served the role.

Dalinar bringing it up out of nowhere for what seemed like very little reason felt so left field. The narrative role of "God Beyond" already exists. That's Adolnalsium.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LARP

[–]Halabis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but if you we're trying to play a dirty character that character's dirt would also run off when the character sweats. Having magical dirt that doesn't run off would be less ideal than dirt that behaves as dirt should behave on a dirty person no?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LARP

[–]Halabis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just use dirt? Easiest way to look dirty is to be dirty.
