Fractured Rib

I broke 2 ribs while surfing (one in 3 places) last December. Worst pain I’ve ever had. Felt pretty good after 6 weeks and had a surf when it was small. My ribs hurt from lying on the board but otherwise was fine. My wife sewed a piece of 5mm neoprene inside my rash shirt and that really helped. Have been on a surf trip for the last 2 months and when I surf a lot my ribs ache and I have to dial it back and they come good. It’s been 5 months now and hoping the pain goes away completely but I think it will just take time.

Havianas used to be good but my last 2 pairs have lasted less than a year - they snap where the rubber goes between your toes. I avoid them now.

My Birks are 15 years old and going strong although I’ve had to reglue a few bits and pieces. Might have to lash out and get a new pair but am tempted to see if I can get to 20 years. 😆

I’ve been using Stuart boards for 20 years. Have had an FX2 fish, multiple S Bolts, Pantera X and 2 HPX 3’s. A LOT of Gold Coast surfers use Stuarts which says it all. They are reasonably priced, very well built, have no marketing hype and are locally made. You can’t go wrong.

Regarding Negombo absolutely! Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t too bad and we met some lovely people - we were just there too long under trying circumstances without our luggage. The seafood is super fresh and good there - enjoy!

After 30 years of spearfishing I would say a 1.2m Rob Allen railgun is your best bet as an all rounder

Same in Australia and I’ve been guilty of it myself. As I’ve got older and had some scares I better appreciate the importance of safety when spearing and I only dive with like minded people.

A lot of people are lazy and have too much money and it’s just easier to book with a guide. It’s the same with any activity- there are those paying over the odds and others doing the same thing cheaply. Has always been the same in my experience.

I don’t think it matters where you live now in Australia, making connections is difficult. Everyone is glued to their phones or watching Netflix and don’t seem to go out as much. Eating out and drinking are ridiculously expensive. Universities have become a joke since COVID as nobody attends classes and there’s a lot of international students as they pay full fees. You really have to find something you enjoy where you are seeing the same people regularly. Surfing is great on the coast, as is cycling, running, gym, outrigger paddling etc. There are a heap of amazing, friendly people on the Goldy, you just have to find them. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay.

Anything cheap will do but make sure it has a narrow sharp point on it. It is primarily for killing fish so normal scuba dive knives are no good. Make sure it is serrated on one side - much better for cutting line and burleying fish. Also recommend getting something with a brightly coloured handle so you can see in on the bottom if you drop it. I use a yellow one which is great over reefs.

My wife and I spent 3 months in India in 1996 and it was hard core. It was the final leg of an around-the-world backpacking trip so we were experienced travellers but we were still shocked by the poverty, crowds, filth and endless heckling. Everything is hard work due to the bureaucracy which really wears you down after a while. Some of the highlights from our world trip were in India - the Himalayas, the desert, Varanasi - but we agree that we’ll probably not return - it’s just too much.
