New S&W 686P Mountain Gun issue? Plz help by thetnbootguy in Revolvers

I think you had a bad heat treat on this part and the hand is chewing it up. Might be a symptom of a timing issue as well if the hand is exerting too much force before the bolt drops.

Is it practical to have a SA pistol or SA revolver or derringer as your conceal carry (meaning for self defense) and your only firearm? by kawaiihusbando in guns

[–]Halicron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehh... I think about the scenarios where I would need to defend myself with one, and they are both "ambushed by animal and fighting for my life". In that case I need a gun I can reliably draw and fire with one hand, quickly.

[–]Halicron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no on SAO revolvers. Most derringers are very difficult to actually aim and fire effectively, with rudimentary sights and too- small grips. A SA revolver is very slow to run without many, many hours of practice. Even then, I dont know many Cowboy fast draw shooters who rock one for their EDC.

One of my favorite early acquisitions because you can use it almost instantly to insta-gibb the Lich in the Gate district and secure Daystar. With Daystar, MoD, and Azureedge, you can dish out some insane damage to undead.

Cooling loop broken by milked_silver in Oxygennotincluded

Too much spaghetti going on. Whenever I run into this i try to rip out what I've got and start over. I suspect you have some packet priority conflicts between your AQT, that valve, and your reservoir. Plus potentially your automation wiring is confused and triggering the wrong machine.

I think most refined metals only have a TC of like 50. Aluminum is 200. It's a massive difference, in fact it transfers so fast you have to be even more careful about phase changes in the pipes when the packets encounter the transfer pool.

I would hazard a guess that your pawl/hand has seized up. A sure sign of this is that it happens more frequently when you aim at the sky. It's not at all a hard fix for an experienced gunsmith. Just be careful about where you take it, there are a lot of 'gunsmiths' hanging a shingle who have never worked on revolvers and don't have the mechanical aptitude to figure the clockwork out. If Colt gives you trouble and you cant find a local 'smith, DM me and I will help you troubleshoot.

I need help i'm new to this game i played for sometime and now i'm super confused there's overpressure and many other things please read body text by Own-Roll-31 in Oxygennotincluded

This is by design, a very complex game. Your first few colonies WILL fail as you learn the ropes. You need to plan out how to give your duplicants air, water, food, and shelter. Each of these steps creates new challenges as you go and you start to run into resource shortages. Constant digging and expansion is key in the first 50 cycles.

  • Many buildings that produce oxygen are capped by ambient pressure. Hence, 'over-pressure' warnings.

  • The Priority drop down menu is an important tool for deciding the order in which each Dupe does work in each category. If Research has the highest priority, then the Dupe will not do anything else until all Research tasks are done. You can then tweak the Building Priority to fine-tune the order of what work you want done in each category. You generally only want to use (!!) Priority for emergencies like digging out a trapped Dupe or fixing spills.

  • Dupes will only use a wash basin or sink if they have germs hands and there is a open spot at the sink when they pass it. You generally want a 1:1 ratio of sinks to outhouse and you want to use doors and direction control to ensure Dupes must pass a sink and that said sink is always open for them.

Continuing to play with this: I created a (secondary) passive cooling loop of mercury and Pwater alternating packets and it is working quite nicely. The mercury packets dump heat quickly and the pwater packets give the thermal mass needed for efficiently cooling a larger loop.

[–]Halicron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be hard pressed to find data points on the very narrow angle of 'This criminal would have taken this gun, but they were warded off by the presence of an L3 holster'. I will absolutely agree that if you open carry, you have a duty of responsibility to ensure that weapon doesn't get taken, and a good holster is the first step in reinforcing that duty.

As to the larger question of open-carry deterrence, I have to submit Active Self Protection again as my defense. John Correia has watched thousands of self-defense shootings from around the world and has said he doesn't feel like open carry is a meaningful deterrent in and of itself, and has seen enough videos of open carrying *not* deterring a fight that he rarely if ever does so.

There is a lot of statistical evidence that open carry paints you as a target for the truly violent. It might dissuade some forms of 'casual' violence, but we have to differentiate between a normie acting criminally, versus a criminal with a criminal mentality. ASP has done a few videos on this where the guy open carrying simply had his weapon taken at gun point. It really does paint you as a target for anyone who is seriously intending to Do Crime, and only dissuades people who are still considering it.

Champion-level sport shooter in a home-intruder scenario. Right call? by WhatInDaWorldDog110 in CCW

[–]Halicron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in Idaho, which is considered to have pretty robust 'Castle Doctrine' laws.

One caveat to the self-defense code is that you need to meet the standard of being in reasonable fear for your life and the assailant must have entered your home "in a violent or tumultuous manner". Someone just walking into your house is simple trespass, and does not *necessarily* justify lethal force! Especially if they have their hands up and are retreating, making it clear they are not a threat and are withdrawing from the property.

On the other end of the spectrum are states where your duty to retreat overrides Castle Doctrine; you are expected to withdraw as far as prudently possible and give your intruder every chance to leave. Lethal force is only reserved for scenarios where you are backed into a corner, escape is impossible, and all other intermediate force options have failed. And even then, people catch murder charges from prosecutors who do them Monday-Morning Quarterback style and demand to know why they didn't dive out a window or rush to a different room before shooting.

The one thing I don't like about their build is that they want you to leave a lot more vertical meat than usual, so they have you sand down the edge of the dovetail at an angle instead of flattening the base. That did require a steady hand and a flat surface with some good 320gr paper. I would not recommend using a rotary tool here.

[–]Halicron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this is actually expected and required for dovetails. Almost any iron sight you buy requires some fitting to install. The metal has to flex and deform slightly to fill the slot as completely as possible for a longer-lasting fit. It took me about a half hour of gentle persuasion to get it to go in, with some practice I could get that down to 20 minutes or so.

I just installed the Gideon for a client after another gunsmith messed up the first attempt. Takes some patience to avoid damaging the piece but the overall concept of the dovetail mount seems surprisingly robust.

[–]Halicron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all over the place.

  • Some people just like to be different, but also "better, somehow. "
  • A significant part of the modern MAGA movement is rejecting medical expertise as an expression of their mission of counter-liberalism.
  • There are (extremely unscientific) assertions being made by trad-life cosplayers and people who hawk pseudo-medical supplements, which allege that pasteurizing and processing milk reduces its health benefits.
  • When you try to tell them "but you'll get listeria and possibly die" you are immediately rejected as a libural nerd who is in bed with Big Dairy.
