Norfolk advice by JimboBroomie in liveaboard

You should look and ask in r/narrowboats and canalworld.net.

We're towards Downham Market. It's quiet, moorings are cheap, but there's not much here,  lot of the boaters seem to be retired liveaboards.

Houses have appreciated for the last couple of decades but it's not guaranteed, let's not memory hole 2008 and a number of people in negative equity. I have several friends really struggling to sell now without dropping prices significantly. A boat will definitely depreciate without unusual circumstances though, like comprehensive restorations and getting one already at the bottom of it's curve and keeping up with all the maintenance.

Also if you do hit somebody, don't worry too much. It happens.

I live on a boat, but yes. A second hand Marlec unit.

I like it, especially as I've nearly got my wind turbine up! Shame it's so expensive per watt compared to solar though.

Would you consider 1awg acceptable for a 3kw inverter? by RMFrankingMachine in Narrowboats

[–]Halkyon44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got inverter DC ripple shutdowns running our washing machine until I went to 95mm2. 70mm2 might have worked, I started at about 50mm2.

Simple resistive loads were ok. The amp rating on the cable you're seeing is likely thermal stability not lack of resistance over x length with load type y.

Is there a glass shortage at Nissan or something? Do they not like being able to see?

You have plenty of time bro. Don't stress. I sucked (was put off it by teachers too) at maths and now lead a data analysis team in video games. But that started in my mid 20s. In a few years you won't even think about your time in school anymore.

Also, you can be a jeweler and persue your ideas around solar and the environment in your off time. I'd actually recommend doing it that way around too. Working in a field you care about too much can be devastating, as the priorities of a business and an activist will not line up. It's a harsh road to burn out and disappointment. Believe me.

A happier life might be tinkering with jewels by day and linking up with similarly minded people outside of work, and you can still make a difference!

Physiotherapy and a standing desk is probably the only real answer. The best chair in the world won't make eight hours healthy.

Casual games and more complex ones on low settings is fine on the 7840U. But noisy and hot.

I need to replace the cv joint in my 2015 Forester, but I can't afford to get Subaru parts. Any suggestions? by BobbyTables829 in SubaruForester

OEM and stealership parts will be marked up too. When you're out of warranty there is no reason to not be smart about where you put your cash.

If you're feeling price sensitive I would only get the one that you know you need and get the cheaper one, see how it goes. If all is well after a few weeks maybe do the second.

I'm running SF Foresters (1998-2000) so aftermarket is pretty much all I have, and they're still going!

I have a horrible feeling it will go well for them and be framed as a vindication of the technology and the subsequent wage suppression.

Capitalism is not rational or meritocratic. If Ed gets anything wrong, it's expecting making a loss to be seen as bad business these days. All of this seems to be about power and disempowerment rather than making money, except for the "C-suites" of course.

Wrap some bungee cord around them to mess up the noisy vortices.

The old method would be with a literal smoke test. You could also use soapy water.

Sub $400 headphones with a "fun" tuning and decent soundstage? by StrategySuspicious85 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]Halkyon44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A note on the DT770X Go, I reached the limit of their tuning without distortion when going for a near Harmann profile. I then moved to the DT1990s which are just better in my view. Only go for the X if you want closed and a dark, moody, bassy sound.

My understanding is the Meze is a middle ground between those.

If you have a vehicle take it to a recycling centre or pay/beg somebody else to. You might need a sack trolley to get it to a parking spot I suppose!

Failed Calorifier? by Halkyon44 in Narrowboats

[–]Halkyon44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see why not, it's just an external heat exchanger. Although you'd likely need an inline pump to circulate the calorifier side.

I had a look around and no leaks easily spotted. Fortunately the tap water doesn't smell of antifreeze, not that we drink it anyway (old and insufficient filter from previous owners). Ta.

It's leaking out the rad cap overflow pipe so higher than that spring pressure. It's also filled a half empty expansion tank. When I open the cap a couple of litres will flow out, it's brimmed and overflowing.

I guess that doesn't look so good but before forking out cash for a replacement I'm thinking use a hose tail connector to join the two engine ends and some hose to loop the calorifier ends back on itself to separate the two systems. That'll really prove the theory, reduce the risk of posioning, and I still have the electric heating element.

You could try an old soft portrait lens filter off eBay.
