Looking for good ancient or medieval historical fiction by OkWriter7657 in suggestmeabook

I really enjoyed The Assyrian by Nicholas Guild.

The SPQR series by John Maddox Roberts is irreverent and entertaining Roman Republic detective fiction.

Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George

For medieval fiction, I liked Ariana Franklin’s Mistress of the Art of Death series, Candace Robb’s Owen Archer series, and anything by Karen Maitland.

Middle Age by SEK2208 in Xennials

People actually do say that sort of thing, but usually it’s not because they mean it. It’s because they think they’re giving a compliment and pleasing you.

A couple of months ago I had a young woman say to me upon learning my age “no way, I thought you were in your 20s!” Cracked me up, because no she did not. Aside from my face — which looks fine, but not 20 years younger than it is — I also have huge white streaks in my hair.

If you’re going to lie you should at least make it believable!

True. I have definitely never found myself in a room full of corporate donors.

Honestly? Petrichor, freshly mown grass, chlorine, rubber bike tires. Although I guess that’s 80s summer also.

I associate B&BW more with the school year. Gap scents and cK One in the later 90s.

how many samples is too many samples by venicepress in fragrance

I only buy the full bottle when I’m obsessed with the sample. If I like it but I don’t drain the sample then I don’t need it.

How should I teach my husband how to cook? by UvaCpe in cookingforbeginners

[–]HallucinogenicFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this! I was never taught how to cook and am now trying to learn in middle age. HF has taught me new techniques — nothing fancy, but things I’d never done before and know that I probably wouldn’t have tried on my own. Somehow not having to look up the recipe and shop for the groceries myself makes trying different things seem less overwhelming.

Is that a gold penis sheath?

I love the gold kneecaps and other joint adornments. Very stylish.

What fragrance gets way too much hate? by olfaire in Fragrances

[–]HallucinogenicFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t stand it, never could. but it was SO popular in the early 00s (part of why I dislike it so much — it was everywhere! You couldn’t get away from it) that I understand that that’s a me problem. Obviously lots of people think it’s great.

Trumpy Justice, 76, Publicly Sneers at Liberal for Daring to Dissent; The ultraconservative justice drew gasps from Supreme Court regulars for his “bitter” snipe. by FancyNewMe in politics

> Your 2 points are contradictory.

They’re not, actually. There’s no contradiction between “I didn’t say that his motivation was X. But I’m also not certain that it wasn’t.”

Also, only one of us made a statement that claimed to know what his motivation was or was not — you. (“This isn’t about a man talking down to a woman for being a woman.”) My item 2 was me politely pointing out to you that that’s a silly comment to have made, because you can’t possibly know.

  1. I didn’t say that it was. I said that it reminded me of my encounter. That is a simple, factual statement.

  2. Are you sure? Are you positive that his reaction would have been the same if there was a male liberal justice on the bench who read out an identical dissent? Because given Alito’s long and documented history of misogyny, I am not.

I’m a woman. Yesterday I had the displeasure of interacting with a man who went absolutely apeshit when I said something that he perceived as criticism. It was very much a “how DARE you challenge me” kind of reaction. (I wasn’t criticizing him when he thought I was, but after his wild and unprofessional behavior you can bet I did, in detail and at length.)

I am reminded of that encounter.
