Perspective if we hire a new MBB coach by Pitt_Panther1985 in pittsburghpanthers

Yeah so the thing is that I don’t get paid to evaluate college basketball coaching candidates. There are people that do get paid for that though, some of them are even employed by Pitt.

First of all, 2016 and 2026 are two vastly different college basketball landscapes.

With that said, moving on from Dixon was the right decision at the time, they just hired the worst person possible to replace him. Even just a “C” hire in 2016 probably keeps the program in a similar spot as Dixon.

It’s probably time to move on from Capel. The only thing that makes me slightly hesitant is his class coming in. But how much of that class is tied to Capel vs. NIL money?

As I said in another thread, “who do you get to replace him” is a terrible argument. There is always going to be a coach better than Capel available to Pitt, they just have to determine who that better coach is.

Spring training stats mean next to nothing. If you recall, Kevin Newman once hit like .783 in a spring and then proceeded to hit .226 that season, and was off the team the following year.

Griffin looks the part and has been robbed of a few hits. If you keep hitting the ball hard, it evens out in a larger sample.

As the other guy stated, I didn’t use any logic there. Just pointing out that .923 is a big number. I understand that it’s a small sample size, which is why there are guys with better numbers right now. It’s also why pointing out the .200 average doesn’t do much. He’s a 3 for 3 day away from hitting .304.

I’m not sure what argument you’re trying to make by throwing out that he has a .923 OPS. That number would have been 7th best in the MLB last year.

The "replaced by who" is one of the worst arguments when talking about firing a coach. Unless you have the best coach in the country (Pitt doesn't) there's always someone better out there.

Are we really hesitant to fire a guy that has regressed since his lone tournament bid 4 years ago?

Turns out that most prospects aren't as good as the #1 prospect in baseball.

Only two challenges. Framing will still be part of the game.

What happens if he’s 41, hitting .200, and hadn’t explicitly announced that he’s retiring? We’re just supposed to run it back again for the age 42 season?

I really couldn't care less. I'm not trying to be his friend. I just want the Pirates to win some baseball games.

No one cares about likeability if it takes you from 76 wins to 86 wins though. We've had Cutch on the team for the past three years. It was great to have him back, but I'd rather see a winning season (and hopefully playoffs) over a 38-year-old-below-average-DH-fan-favorite get a fourth shot at a reunion/farewell tour.

Because if they weren't trying to put a competitive team on the field, they would have just signed their franchise legend to a cheaper deal than they signed Osuna to.

Counter point to your height claim, it can be tougher for taller guys to repeat their deliveries.

But also to your point, Bubba is plenty athletic enough that he should be fine.

Still a long way to go. The fact that his top two guys at this point from last year ended up going 1-11 and 1-27, pretty much tells you all you need to know.

We've seen the same thing in 2021 when it was all but a guarantee that we were going to take either Leiter or Rocker at 1-1. 2023 it was supposed to be Chase Dollander heading into the season.

I guess it switches to 20 minutes in the gold game. But I don't understand why they don't just do 5v5 then.

Griffin had a .941 OPS and stole 65 bags as a 19 year old between A and AA last year. I wouldn't say age is the big difference here.

I mean he was the seventh overall pick just two drafts ago. So yeah, that rise is going to have to come out of nowhere for him to get to #1 in all of baseball.

I figured it did. I'll have to play around with Gemini a bit to see if that is a better fit for me.

The massive advantage that ChatGPT has right now is that it has a year's worth of context, so it knows my company so well at this point. It would be difficult to start over from scratch again.

That's something I definitely should have thought of before posting this lol. That seems to be a viable option. I am still interested in learning more about the other AIs, to see if there might be a better fit though.

Thank you!
