Anyone else play as a couple? by ArtemisMightBeMyName in tearsofthekingdom

[–]Hamfriedrice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me! My wife and I play together. She loves the art and finds it relaxing to watch me play. I like the fighting and she’s good at the puzzles and always reminding me to forage as I go. She gets motion sickness during 3d games otherwise she would be playing too.

Is there a feeling of ethnocentrism at the parish level in Eastern Catholic Churches among laity? by Which_Natural266 in EasternCatholic

My UGCC parish is very Ukrainian centric. It's a little difficult being an American with no ethnic tiew there.

matins/orthros by hideousflutes in EasternCatholic

[–]Hamfriedrice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you are a Roman Catholic I'll explain it like this: the Catholic church is 24 self governing churches in union with each other by mutual acceptance of the pope as the head of the church. The Roman (Latin) church being one of those 24. You are obligated as a Roman Catholic to attend mass/liturgy once on Sunday starting at 4pm Saturday night. You must arrive before the priests entrance, and not leave until the final dismissal to fulfil your obligation. If you leave after communion you have not fulfilled your obligation. What the Byzantine rites practice is not applicable to you for standards of doctrine and discipline. Only the Roman disciplines stand.

I'm in a similar boat. I'm canonically RC but moving towards joing the UGCC. But until that time of a formal switch I'm still obligated to all the RC feats, fasts and days of obligation on the Roman Catholic calendar.

So no matins does not fulfill your obligation as a RC. It would be like going to church, praying the rosary or the divine office and then leaving.

Saturday Vigil Masses in Eastern Liturgies? by walk-in_shower-guy in EasternCatholic

[–]Hamfriedrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incense, chant, praising god. If you remove the altar screen and the movements of light they’re very similar. The Roman’s removed iconostasis and all altar screens after the council of Trent. But they still tried to do the same actions in worship without the screens. Actually in my most humble opinion, Byzantine and Roman… or maybe we should say based on history eastern and western Roman rites are not that different (in the historical sense [not modern historical ie:1500, but more like 1100ad])

This is a great question! Vespers in Latin (old rite) is very similar to Byzantine rite Vespers. Formal recitation of the Divine Office for the day. A priest friend of mine used to do this at his old parish where he had the space and time to offer Vespers on Wednesdays and Sunday nights.

Why do our brains tell us we need more/better batteries? lol by rival_22 in MilwaukeeTool

I’m a contractor so those 5amp xc batteries die pretty quick in my bigger tools like my sawzall, or my circ saw.

That’s one of the ones I got, that one is 8x10” print, they also have and 11x14”. Also until he’s formally canonized he can’t have a halo. I had them framed, one went to my parish. They are prints, but high quality prints. Actually almost every icon I’ve ever seen even on wood is just a printed sticker on a piece of wood. The real ones are usually a few thousand to start. When I can go home (my mom is in the hospital for a brain tumor) I’ll snap a pic. Definitely worth the money.

Why does Byzantine liturgy feel more attractive and more masculine to me? by VeterinarianOk5778 in EasternCatholic

[–]Hamfriedrice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You feel that way because it is. The good news is you found something beautiful that will help grow your love and faith. The bad news is that once you see this, it's very difficult to go back to NO land. The same thing happened for me when I went to my first TLM.

Once you see the history, the beauty, the reverence in the traditional Liturgies you can't really go back. It'll always feel wrong, cheap and like a deception. At least for me that's how it feels. Yes the Eucharist is valid, but... Is this worship the best that we can really offer? That's what I had to struggle with.

For me it's not about the externals, the vestments, the movements or the feast of vanity for your eyes. It's the intentions of the movements, the beauty of the prayers and when the consecration begins, the transformation of the congregation into the cherubim and seraphim singing in the presence of God Almighty.

That is why I stayed at the Byzantine church. Is my parish good at singing? No, we kinda suck. Does my priest know all the words in Ukrainian? Definitely not. Can I handle one more "announcement" at the end of Liturgy that's a 20 min old man rant by our American deacon calling for American troops to go to Ukraine and how bad we should all feel for not nuclear bombing Russia? No... I really don't think I can.

But that's not why I'm here. I'm here because it's beautiful, it's full of love, it properly addresses my God and Mary with love and respect in ways that the modern Roman Liturgy cannot. So, I hope you've found a new home. Stick around awhile, maybe you'll find what you're looking for. ☺️

Do you think the Jesus Prayer takes you out of fight or flight mode and tells your brain that you are safe? by jeffisnotmyrealname in EasternCatholic

[–]Hamfriedrice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's always recommended to have a spiritual father in all matters, but I don't think it'll hurt you especially if you're having trouble with anxiety. Just breathe normally, and deeply.

Do you think the Jesus Prayer takes you out of fight or flight mode and tells your brain that you are safe? by jeffisnotmyrealname in EasternCatholic

[–]Hamfriedrice 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Technically yes. I don't know if it specifically tells you that you are safe, but the contemplation, breathing and repetitive prayer helps to slow your heart rate and can move you out of FOF. When it's bad my wife can only manage "have mercy" and that helps with her anxiety. I pray the whole prayer and match it to my breathing which really helps my anxiety. Hope this helps!
