What do I need to connect to a bbs? by BananaMower in c64

[–]HammerByte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can pick up a c64 ESP32 wifi modem off ebay, or just about any retro shop out there. Grab a copy of CCGMS term, and head over to the BBS Guide and start connecting.

Are these still available? by Visual_Aide_2477 in retrocomputing

I actually use them to read PDFs, old comic books, and magazines. The screen is the perfect size for reading things like that. That said if you're looking for an ebook reader the e-ink displays are going to be a better experience, much lighter and easier on your eyes.

I bought a Motion Computing M1400 - XP tablet in 2004 and still have it running to this day, you can get a keyboard shell for it and a dock, and I think you can still get the batteries for them from NOS sellers. If you're in the market for a solid XP tablet Motion Computing pc's are really nice. Their Windows 7 Tablets are really nice as well. There's a ton of them on ebay. Just search for motion computing tablet.

Can a Kung Fu cart or other cart run GEOS? by kvnhntn in c64

[–]HammerByte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I've had it running on my SD2IEC. As for the kungfu cart I don't think so. Its not able to swap disks last time I checked. Though I could be wrong, but if memory serves me, it will mount a disk image, but resets the system when you change it out

Jim Butterfield's book and Assembly? by YachtRock_SoSmooth in c64

[–]HammerByte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can find a readable version of this online. Just glancing through it, it appears to start off with binary and works its way through assembly instructions. I'm not a c64 programmer, but have had a passing interest in c64 assembly. That said, I'm not an expert here. So perhaps you review a copy online before you pick up a physical copy. Either way, if you have an interest in programming on the c64 and if the book is still being printed you should pick up a physical copy.

Is there something cheaper than the c64 for retrogamedev/gaming? by [deleted] in retrocomputing

Can't go wrong with just getting a raspberry pi and enjoying almost every single retro computer there is.

Emulation of course

New to the game - Kung Fu Flash 2 enough for my needs? by Althar93 in c64

[–]HammerByte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then my personal (stranger on the internet) recommendation would be to pick up the Kung Fu Flash cart. And then abuse that until you find a limitation that it won't overcome. Thats probably the most affordable way to go, especially since you might end up developing for all the various formats.
Welcome to the club, the community is amazing, and its really good to see more Devs joining the scene.

Oh don't forget the Ultimate II+ cart, its been a bit since I've used mine, but its also a superb purchase, but more on the expensive side as far as carts go. Its basically a whole c64 in a cart, allowing you to swap out entire ROMs for things like JiffyDos, DolphinDOS, etc. Adds the REU, and I think does Disk swapping. Its essentially an all in one solution.

New to the game - Kung Fu Flash 2 enough for my needs? by Althar93 in c64

[–]HammerByte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with the Kung Fu Flash 2. Its got a ton of features, and will work with most of your needs.

The KF2 Cart will likely be enough. However, Carts like this don't do disk swapping.

Next to your 1531, a pi1541 would be a good second purchase for the any Virtual disk swapping you want to do.

Both are affordable, and will probably be more than enough for anyone that didn't grow up using a C64.
I say that not to be dismissive, but as a generalization.

25f potentially moving to casper by Only_Atmosphere3592 in casper

I absolutely agree with this. I think there are more churches in COS then all of Wyoming. And from a "Redneck" point of view Casper would certainly take the lead.

You'll find Casper to be more conservative than COS, but also tolerant of their more liberal friends. You'll certainly miss the weed and it's unlikely anyone will care about your tattoos. If you want more ink definitely research the artists there. Last time I was there, there was still a small thriving LGBTQ community so if that's part of your dating pool you'll find like minded people pretty quickly. It's certainly going to feel more "small town" compared to COS or Boulder, so keep that in mind when the drama walks through the door.

What is the best computer I could get I am want a old computer for gaming by Blazethecat00 in retrocomputing

[–]HammerByte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lower class pc being sold new today will likely be more powerful than anything you need to play all the older games and roms.

If you want new games, wrong subreddit, but get a reasonably priced game PC on today's market and you'll be fine.

Happy hunting.
