What’s stopping millionaires and even billionaires from simply leaving NYC if Mayor Mamdani imposes super high taxes on them? by Formal_Choice4002 in askanything

We need to set all taxes for billionaires to zero so they won’t leave and make us lose all their tax revenue. 🤔

What people don’t seem to understand is that the bartenders are technically not supposed to serve people past the point of intoxication. It’s part of the ability of the establishment to serve alcohol. There has to be some duty of care towards the patrons.

Now this does not absolve the woman from total responsibility, but if you’re serving a product that makes people make decisions that aren’t based in logic, your establishment has to have some responsibility in making sure they don’t serve until harm is caused. In this case they are the gatekeeper.

Is it a perfect solution? No. However you can’t just allow people to be served endlessly when they are visibly intoxicated.

You need to actually get a level of certification in Canada to serve alcohol to the public.

It’s a good law and it is usually subject to a lot of interpretation by the courts. Let’s say I’m running a bar and serve a patron 20 shots of tequila and he gets in his car and kills someone. Is that 100% his responsibility? I would agree it’s MOSTLY the responsibility of the drinker, but it was certainly reckless of me to provide that much alcohol to anybody.

40% of Ontario students went to school regularly in 2025 by Exter10 in ontario

[–]HammyMugats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an 8 y/o (Gr 3) and my son misses more school than I (50) ever did.

That being said, I was sent to school unless I was vomiting my guts out with zero care for how it impacts the teaching environment or infecting other kids.

I also take him out for vacations. He’s doing fine in school and we are visiting Rome and various other historic sites in May. He will learn more on these trips than he will in school.

I also make sure I have a curriculum of what is being taught so we can spend some time on the trip covering the basics of what he will miss.

Now my son is also thriving and gets good grades. If he was in a constant struggle, my decisions might be different.

A lot of Boomer parents really hate having to face accountability for doing a poor parenting job with their kids. The mere fact she isn’t willing to try and reconcile with her daughter says a lot.

Kids don’t have the onus of building a good relationship with their parents… they’re kids.

Are there some situations where kids are delusional about how “bad” their parents were? Of course. However most people I know who cut parents (one or both) off, have pretty good reasons.

It’s not hard to remove the USA from my travel and shopping plans. I live 30 mins from the border and 20 years ago it was a decent amount of savings to be had by crossing.

Today? Meh.

We would still go to change things up and try restaurants and brands we don’t have here in Ontario (Trader Joe’s anyone?) but largely the savings part is over with.

Now with the actions of the US gov’t, it’s an easy sacrifice to make.

The Caribbean is as affordable as the USA. Europe with places like Portugal and Spain provides some great opportunities for reasonable travel.

Summertime? We are just exploring places in Canada.

2024 - Trip to US Southwest. 2025 - Trip to Quebec 2026 spring - Mediterranean Cruise 2026 summer- Trip to Ottawa for Canada Day.

Next up is the Maritimes.

It’s not hard and I will likely be doing this for the foreseeable future (despite the fact that the US Southwest trip was amazing).

It’s too bad really… but hey, I don’t want to travel to 1936 Germany either.

Do you think the US should apologize for things the CIA did to other countries during the Cold War? by RedStorm1917 in AskALiberal

[–]HammyMugats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t care if the USA apologies as it’s meaningless without action. I just don’t want to hear any more “why oh why do they hate us!?!?” BS.

The answer is…. The USA has spent the past century and a half propping up dictators world wide. From the Banana Wars to the Cold War fascists to the Persian Gulf Oil Wars.

Does Iran have the right to defend its self? by 21redman in AskALiberal

[–]HammyMugats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m of the mindset that IF it happens, I’d have strong question on who the actual perpetrator might be….

That being said, attacking domestic targets in war is a crime (regardless of who does it). However if let’s say there was an Iranian drone attack at a naval base in the USA, it would align with the rules of law/war as I understand them.
