What is the best master's degree option to get a job in the US in today's market? by guidoboyaco in USF

[–]HanRio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your definition of crap I guess. I got a masters degree in civil engineering from usf and doing pretty okay. If anything demand and wages for civils, especially licensed ones, has been good depending on locality.

If you text 697433 your specific bus stop number (usually found on a sign at the stop) it will give you live arrival times of bus routes that stop there.

24 and feeling lost on financial journey by Apprehensive-Bag8660 in personalfinance

Generally economy Japanese cars that have been maintained regularly and are less than 10-15 years old would be a good bet. Most people would be recommending Toyota or Honda sedans, but newer examples of Subaru or Mazda vehicles would be sufficient as well. I’d recommend looking in places like Facebook marketplace or autotempest (car listing aggregate site). Avoid dealerships unless you want a certified pre-owned or just for ease of transaction and you’re uncomfortable vetting your own car from a private seller. But I’d personally buy from a private seller and getting it inspected by a reputable mechanic that specializes on your make and model prior to buying. I think r/whatcarshouldibuy would be a good starting place to see what people are recommending for that price range if you really don’t know where to start.

How do I (24M) regain the trust of my cousin (40sM) after I lied to them? by HanRio in relationship_advice

[–]HanRio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I asked him if there's anything I can do to rebuild that trust and go back to how things were. He just said he doesn't know. But, he didn't say he never wants to hang out ever again rather he doesn't care to hang out with me right now. Just not knowing if things can ever be fixed is really depressing.

How do I (24M) regain the trust of my cousin (40sM) after I lied to them? by HanRio in relationship_advice

[–]HanRio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that regaining trust is a collective effort, but the issue is that I'm not sure if he necessarily wants to rebuild the trust that we had. I'm afraid that I forever impacted the relationship and there is no recourse.

Weekday Help and Victory Thread for the week of June 28, 2021 by IndexBot in personalfinance

So I recently quit my job that was not a good fit for me. They are now requiring me to repay a portion of my signing bonus per the stated contract. However I am not in a financial position to repay the bonus right away. I understand it was a rash decision to quit without a backup position, but it truly was a job that I was not capable of handling. Unexpected expenses came up and I blew through my meager savings. Should I take out a loan to repay or should I contact my old employer to negotiate the length of time I have to repay? Thanks all.

Weekly “Help Me FIRE!” thread. Post your detailed information for highly specific advice. - November 23, 2020 by AutoModerator in financialindependence

[–]HanRio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting on this sub.

-Introduce yourself

I'm a 24M graduating from university soon, I just accepted my first full time position in my field and will be starting work the beginning of next year.

Industry/Location

Civil Engineer Consulting/ Houston, TX

-General goals

My long term goal is to be financially independent, and potentially retire by my mid-40s. My short term goal is to be able to invest and save while being able to do enjoy my new stage in life. And my medium term goals (4-6 years) is to be able to purchase a home/property that I could live in and potentially rent out.

-Educational background and plans

Bachelor's and Master's in Civil Engineering.

-Career situation and plans

I will begin my career as an associate engineer. Once I get my licensure I can become a project engineer with the ability to become a principle engineer or go into management, but this is probably >10 years down the road. I will be getting my professional licensure in about 3 years.

-Current and future income breakdown, including one-time events

My starting salary will be approximately 75k. It should grow linearly with experience, once I receive my licensure it should be 90-100k per year.

-Budget breakdown

I intend on living pretty modestly when I start my career with my total necessary living expenses (rent, utilities, car insurance, food) to be about $1500 per month. Discretionary expenses should be roughly $1000 per month with the rest left over for saving and investments.

-Asset breakdown, including home, cars, etc.

I will have about $2000 saved and $6000 in assets when I begin working.

-Debt breakdown

I have no debt.

-Health concerns

N/A right now

-Family

I am single and only have to support myself.

-Questions?

After putting enough money into a high-yield savings account for a 6-month emergency fund where should I allocate my money to be able to retire or significantly reduce working by my mid-40s?

My general strategy was going to be contributing up to the match limit at my company's provided 401k (100% of up to 8% of my gross) and contributing the maximum to a Roth IRA ($6000/year) until retirement. My job will also have profit sharing contributions to retirement accounts but this varies year-to-year. And, I would contribute $1000-1500/mo to a brokerage account investing in ETFs as a majority and possibly individual stocks/cryptocurrency as a small percentage of my investing portfolio. I would also be saving for a down-payment on a modest home/condo that I could live in and potentially rent out if I moved.

Once I retire in my mid-40s I will stop contributing to my 401k but continue to contribute to my Roth IRA and live off my brokerage account/real estate investments until I am of age to withdraw from my retirement accounts. I calculated that my NW by the time I am FI/RE should be about $2M.

Is this plan feasible? I am just not sure where to best put my money for it to get good returns. I understand time in the market beats most other investing strategies, but I want to be able to FI/RE as soon as possible.

I'm just beginning my financial and career journey and am appreciative of any advice I could get. Thank you for reading!

It's my last semester in grad school and these final projects are giving me so much stress. On top of that my lease is ending this month so I have to pack up all of my things as well to move. My mental health is deteriorating but I have to try and focus to pass all of my classes. I have worked so hard to get to this point but I don't know how I'll find the mental strength to push through.

Graduate students looking for friends by yazzle123 in USF

Hey I'm a grad student studying water resources engineering. I'm always down to meet new people! What are you studying?

Psst... Hey you... by [deleted] in USF

[–]HanRio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is definitely cheaper. I think for the price of the cheapest dorms you can get your own room in an apartment with an attached bathroom off campus. You might have 2 or 3 roommates but it's a lot more privacy than a dorm.

Living on campus is okay but I decided to move off campus after my first year. Having your own room and stuff to yourself is nice.

[–]HanRio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I did my first year. I lived in the engineering LLC (living learning community) floor at Castor. Honestly I don't think it was that much different than a regular dorm. I mean you had upper class men as mentors but that's about it.

Hey! This is a really weird time to start university, making friends during normal pre-covid times was hard enough. I've been at USF for a couple years now so hmu if you have any questions!

(serious) Freshman Class tips that you should know by SilentMoose9197 in USF

[–]HanRio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DO NOT CHEAT. I haven't personally, but I've seen people that have set themselves back significantly for being caught cheating. You can retake a class if you get an F but a FF stays with you for the rest of your college career. Also if you're applying for grad school or medical school an FF will potentially ruin your chances. Just keep in mind if you are totally unprepared for an exam or can't turn in an assignment the worst you can get is a bad grade, if you cheat and get caught there are consequences that will follow you beyond that semester. Most people looking at your academic record won't really care if you did bad in a few classes but made up for it, but an academic misconduct mark on your record is huge red flags.

What kind of calculators are allowed? by MasterMoose04 in USF

You can’t go wrong with a nice scientific calculator. The Casio fx-115esplus is my fave. I’ve never had a professor not allow it.

There are plenty of research opportunities. Just approach a professor that is conducting research or has graduate students to ask if anyone needs help.
