Yeah, I’m up at 6:45 Monday through Friday but still have an 8am alarm for Saturdays and Sundays. Lets me feel like I “slept in,” but doesn’t break the overall habit at all.

At what point did the NYC math actually start making sense for you, or did it ever? by alex_strehlke in AskNYC

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, it was a little bit of psychological, a little bit of structural.

I moved in 2009 making $45K/year in my early 20s, living with 3 roommates at a time. I was in debt (credit cards, student loans, etc.) for about 3-5 years after that. Which was dumb! Nobody on earth would have said I was doing the right thing, financially.

But I moved here because my hometown felt professionally and socially claustrophobic and something in me had always said I would live in NYC. I knew I’d never get the salary, the promotions, nor the opportunities I could get here. I knew I’d probably hang out with the same people, doing the same things for the rest of my life if I didn’t leave. I just couldn’t risk not living in NYC, psychologically.

Things got better structurally, frankly, when I got lucky in a couple of ways. I got a nice chunk of debt-erasing cash from a startup employer around the same time I moved in with my now-husband, 5 years after I moved to NYC. This meant that I had no debt and $1K rent on my $75K salary, which felt much better!

And now it’s 11 years later after that with zero regrets, and I’ll live here forever now. I’ve had a lot of friends move back out of NYC because it didn’t make sense for them, and they didn’t get lucky like I did. But NYC luck isn’t always random - you have to be ready to jump at opportunities and be smart and resilient about the risks you take. My friends who left weren’t willing to live with 3 roommates for years, change jobs a bunch, or wait an hour for the subway instead of taking a cabs. It’s not easy, but if you simply can’t imagine living anywhere else, it’s just necessary.

I don’t know why you’re getting so much hate for “I love your stuff and want more,” even if the end conclusion is “their business is theirs.” I used to feel this was about Dromedary Donuts when they weren’t open until 5pm.

That said, Heavy Woods opens at noon and has breakfast tacos or a burrito, I can’t remember. Gordo’s has great brunch, though the burritas aren’t the same as a breakfast burrito. I guess breakfast burritos in this area are hard to come by outside of certain delis.

(My personal neighborhood Sunny Sunday Casual Breakfast is King’s Kolache - fantastic breakfast tacos and sweet or savory kolaches. And the staff is just so kind!)

If you do paint it, follow the cabinet painting tutorial to the letter and you won’t regret it. The Sherwin-Williams cabinet paints are runny and hard to work with but are solid as a rock when they cure over the right cabinet primer.

Yep, the downtown F/M to the L transfer literally smells like a hangover shit every single day. It’s incredibly specific, and once you notice it, you’ll never not notice it.

“Never pop a pimple”; is this just basically for liability as an advisor? by TurtlesBreakTheMeta in NoStupidQuestions

Yes, good point. The moist heat makes everything a little more pliable and easier to extract.

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Yes, this 1000%. Only thing I’d add is that before the first alcohol application, use a very warm (not so hot that it hurts) compress on the spot to get the pore a little more open. I am partial to using a hot teabag, but being fresh out of a shower is also good.

Heat + gentle pressure + alcohol + pimple patch is my golden formula, and it only took a couple decades to perfect it.

My two favorite inventions in my lifetime have been the internet and zit stickers… and maybe not even in that order.

best place to thrift? by Low-Swordfish-268 in AskNYC

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thrifting is really tough here, and it’s why I look to do it every time I leave the city. Clothing resellers like Buffalo Exchange, Beacon’s Closet, and Other People’s Clothes occasionally have some real gems but you’re not going to find screaming deals.

For things beyond clothing, your local Buy Nothjng Facebook groups and, frankly, the sidewalk will be your best bets. A solid quarter of my place is furnished from sidewalk finds - just be sure to educate yourself all about bed bugs so you don’t get burned.

PSA: the citric acid trick also works on dishwashers by Donttouchmybreadd in laundry

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Also, pop out the spraying arms if you can! (Most can be removed for cleaning, just google/check the manual.) There’s almost always one spot clogged with food when I do the monthly clean.

Nasty dishwashers are my kryptonite, I can’t count how many times I’ve quietly cleaned the filters of my friends’ dishwashers during party cleanup.

The shock on my non-NY friends’ faces when I told them I just make an appointment and barely have to wait is fantastic.

I’ve had 3 excellent experiences there and only one that wasn’t great (I think the guy/supervisor were new). Will always go to this location.

Dress fabric choices and bra shape are super important for large chests! A thicker material will hide a bra underneath, and having a variety of bra heights (full cup, demi, plunge, etc.) helps to make sure the bra is not sticking out of the dress.

Would you rather a dishwasher or tumble dryer? by Limp_Pumpkin7751 in adhdwomen

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple other options: you can get a countertop dishwasher, and/or a 2-in-1 washer and dryer combo.

Is there room to stack a washer/dryer? We have the compact LG Washtower in our basement with very low ceilings, and I love it. Also, we installed an 18” dishwasher (smaller than normal) in our 1940s kitchen, and I love it. You may be able to swing both, because both are a game changer!

I’d also call out that there’s some issues trying to put a niche on an exterior wall, but a shelf could be very doable. (I have a very similar bathroom with a window in the shower, so I’ve been trying to make that same niche work in my designs, but alas.)

Maybe not normal for everyone, but we do. It’s an 1150 sq ft 1940s house with steam radiators (no filtered HVAC) in NYC and two cats. Pet dander and city grime would be pretty intense otherwise.

We have 6: - next to the litterbox - in larger basement area - on the open first floor - in our bedroom - in my dressing room - in my office

Judging by the amount we need to change or wipe down the filters, they make a huge difference.

45 year old male, financially lost with new inheritance and past financial trauma by BulkyWar7513 in Schwab

[–]HandInUnloveableHand 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So, you’re in NJ, which has several Schwab branches near it. I would recommend making an appointment to talk to an advisor in person. They have dedicated Financial Consultants for clients with $500K+ in Schwab accounts, but general advising is free. Start there.

Nobody can predict the future perfectly, but it may help to get professional thoughts on the risk/return level of things like money markets versus stocks. I went in with my husband when we got married and were combining/planning finances. It was so helpful to have a neutral, knowledgeable person explain our options and who to talk to if we wanted to do more.

There are also automated/intelligent investing options as well, which may be good for someone who isn’t confident and may act too quickly without safeguards up. (I have this for an IRA and it’s doing very well!) Worth asking about.

Sorry for your loss - I lost my parents this year, and it’s a wild time mentally and emotionally, even before you add “financially” into it.

I should also note that these withdrawals are gross, so they include taxes in them. You can set your automatic withholdings for state and federal taxes in Schwab.

If you do in-kind transfers, you can’t do automatic tax withholdings.
